We’re committed to making a show that is true to the source material, which means starting off at a fast pace, inevitably slowing down as the story gets more complex and then having someone else take this baby to the finish line when I pass away around season 270.

We are pretty excited to have the entirety of season 125 be Elayne and Aviendha taking a bath.

  2. Ranking of star wars movies is hard, since they are all cheesy at best, but saddled with 30 years of cultural significance.

My review of both of the spin offs so far is that I think they were both better than the new sequels...

Sticking with Solo; the movie was basically the story of a street urchin and his coming of age story to how he became a smuggler. If you look at it from that perspective, it did quiet well.

My bet is they will cast relative unknowns in the younger roles.

I like Timothy Omundson for Thom.

Agreed; most long running TV shows cast respected/career/theatre actors as adult leads, maybe one or two known names, but then build up a cast of young, aspiring talent.

Rafe: I think being involved online is a great way to contribute to the show.  You'd be shocked by how many showrunners/writers/executives/etc read posts for their show on reddit/twitter/AV Club and more.  On past shows, most people would discuss fan reaction the morning after each episode.

    I doubt he's here? Maybe?

  5. If y'all think that polygamy won't play well, you haven't been following Game of Thrones, which is, as one comedian put it, a decade long ploy to get Americans to be okay with incest. ;)

I think the biggest challenge will be the depictions of the One Power, without it looking stupid/sappy.

  6. I know movies are fictional and normal rules don't apply. However, if a movie does not go out of it's way to explain how it's in-universe rules are different than normal rules, that falls into the suspension of disbelief...but there have to be limits.

I first thought of this while watching the end of Jurassic World when the lose dinosuars (speficically the gaint predator fish one), was swimming along the (I guessed California, but could've been Hawai) coast about to munch on a surfer for lunch.

A few things, firstly, depending on the time of year (not real context clues in the movie), the water off California is quiet cold, so large cold-blooded predators are rare. Secondly, and kinda more importantly, the required caloric intake of an animal that size would require that it eat almost exclusively large whales. It would not swim up to shore and eat surfers.

This comes more into focus with "The Meg" - the story of a shark which terrorizes beach goers world wide; again, it fails the "water temperature" and "caloric intake" tests.

I'm all for crazy animal movies, but at least, you know, make an effort to make them make sense.

    One last point:

Sharknados might sound dangerous, but a whalenado would be much, much more deadly. It's physics.

  7. From my memory of incident - I was 10, so this is mostly paroiting parents/teachers - Koresh was portrayed as a crazy messianic figure who was seeking confrontation with the government, and therefore got what he deserved.

I should note that the key offense I remember hearing about wasn't the polygamy or the guns, but that he thought he was Jesus.

  8. Shockingly I agree!

It was based off primary source material, so at worst it's guilty of pro-davidian bias, but that's just because it's based off the surivoirs accounts, and the accounts of the negotiator.

I still think they were crazy, but the ATF was overeager to get a "win" after Ruby Ridge, over played their hand and they were never able to back down.

It's an interesting object lesson in the application of force between asymetric forces, neh?

The final difference between your review and what I (and even more, my daughter) felt was the disappointment of Thor not winning in that climactic scene after he had lost EVERYTHING, and still fought and overcame the immense hurdles...

Meh, Thor tried and failed, which is fine for him. When has he ever won on his first try. That axe (and therefore thor) clearly will be somehow important in the resolution of it all.

  10. Saw it.

    Liked it.

Details in spoiler (yes, there are spoilers)

It was, without a doubt, the best Avengers ensamble movie. I think that the writing and production of the MCU films has come a long way since the first Ironman movies. My only real complaint was with Dr. Strange who I believe was just type cast and they told Benderdict Cucumberbach to act like a haughty British professor, which he pulled off perfectly.

Also, I'm getting kind of annoyed with Tony Stark as a character, but I guess that's the point?

As for the movie I thought it was very well paced, with only a few scenes which "lagged" and they were mainly expositional or character related - specifically the Gamora/Thanos scenes. I understood Thanos' actions more than Gamoras, and really that's the main part of the movie which struggled for me.  I also didn't understand Dr. Strange giving up the time stone, unless he saw that was part of how to defeat Thanos.

Quick rant re: Thanos. So his entire motivation is that his idlyic homeword was overpopulated, and he had to kill roughly half the people on the planet to make it livable again? This only (kind of) worked, which forced him down the path of "killing half the universe." For a movie villian backstory/motivation it's actually pretty good.

There were some production goofs, and I didn't understand/get the entire battle for wakanda; it didn't make any tactical sense to me. The [unlimited number of faceless bad guys] vs [good guys who can't die] troup is a bit over worked.

Once the battle revolted around Vision, things got ... better ... meaning more real.

Lastly, I'm curious as to where the MCU goes from here, and what will happen in the next avengers movie. My theory is that somehow the good guys will get the gaunlet, remove the stones, and do a timey-windy-unwindy-thing to bring everyone back to life?

They were gung-ho about the idea even before the cousin showed up. Just watch the scene where his lady friend said they should be out there doing something, and Black Panther said something along the lines of "what, should we have armies out there?" And Rhino dude was all nodding his head and saying his army is at his disposal? They were looking for a fight, and the cousin brought it to them.

I don't think he, running into rhino tribe first was a mistake either.

Ahh, that must've been during my bathroom run.

    Makes more sense now.

Though...the counsin and the war tribe _do_ have a point, but, then again, so does the BP. Yes, they probably could rule the world if they wanted to, but they'd have to do it be conquest, so, how different, in the end, would they really be from those they are conquering?

I like the soft-diplomacy approach, but that's not surprising.

    [\spoiler]

  12. Black Panther; great movie.

I didn't get why the rhino-calavrly tibe sided with the cousin?

The ape-tribe saying they wouldn't join, then joining at the end as sooooooooooooooooo predictable.

I liked the actual ended "Count me amoung those who threw themselves off the ships rather than voyage into bondage" but I didn't like the set up to it; I didn't believe the fight.

So I didn't realize this was a thing until I tuned into the US game this morning and found that, for the first time since 1994, I didn't recognize any of the players. How was the team selected? Top college hockey players who got wavers from their schools? That's great, and I love college hockey (more open and relatable game), but, this is a fail.

I want to cheer for the Canadian super-team vs the world, mainly because it's the only time in pop culture that Canadians have an uber-image. I want to Oveckin and his friends from the KHL play former NHL teammates; I want to see Sweden darkhouse into the finals with impeckable passing and Lindquist between the pipes. I want to see the US team try so hard, and maybe inspire more people to play and fight for ratings and relivance for the NHL.

If the NHL wants to increase viewership, the Olympics provides free advertising; want to keep watching this amazing players? Tune into your local station and watch hockey!

    Sorry, that was a rant.

  14. I didn't mind either Perrin or Elyanes arc when I listened to the books - you are right esp abount Perrin, it was some of "lets check in with some normies"

I disagree that there were no politics w/o Elyane, what I didn't like is that for a few books we had two different plots that were essentially the same - Egwene and and Elyane were both thrust into positions of power when they were young and had to learn how to deal with people dismissing them without having to reley on their "i can call on lighting" - abilities. That's a really cool story, but I only needed one of them.

    Wedge transcends the movies

How? Did I totally miss something? He's a wingman with, what, 10 lines a movie? Mostly being an in-battle hypeman for Luke?

    I don't see how he's important.

I thought that Po was being created as a higher level character (plot mover/key character) but asides from "is a really good pilot (who, btw, is totes down with mutany)" what does he bring to the table? I'd rather him be a Wedge-level bit character.

  16. 47 minutes ago, SinisterDeath said:

Well it IS Science Fantasy after all.

Crashing even an X wing into Snokes ship at the speed of light would be more than enough to destroy it. But not in Star Wars universe.. apparently.

Weapon power vs shield/hull strength is what it is.. I'm sure there's graphs/stats that show X wings and Tie Fighters have some pretty powerful weapons for their size...

Course, if you go the Hard Sci-Fi route, swarm-fighters are pretty redundant.
You could hit a ship from 500km away before they even knew you were there, and easily take out all those little ships before they even got close. But watching Cosmic Battle Ship isn't nearly as fun as watching top gun fighter pilot drama.

Hey! Hamil summoning his inner Joker was epic. Specially when he makes eye contact with Rey drinking that Green milk, asserting his dominance. Total alpha move.

Inter-universe sci-fi fights are the neridest, dumbest, and coolest things ever.

The power output of a warp drive is more than a death star; a galay-class star ship -could- destroy a planet, but they don't because JL-Pipes won't let them.

I wonder if hundreds of tie fighters couldn't overwhelm their shields, though. We don't really see one-vs-numbers alot in the ST universe (DS9 has some lots vs lots battles, and the one lots vs DS9 [whose power level is ... writer dependant]. However, the suicide tactic seems to be valid in both, as it's what Riker (in BoBWp2) and Worf (in FC) try.

    ... but, back to TLJ,

I liked it. It worked in universe - though it got some things wrong, and had some supurflious plots and characters [Po, IMO, is useless]. I liked Luke in it, to be contraversial.

His character was always more on-the-fence about things than even Lia, so I can see him retreating when his nephew tried to kill him and blows up his school. I liked Yoda's lesson; learn from your mistakes, and I liked his actions at the end.

Instead of hating on TLJ, I'd be much more interested in plot speculation around the last movie.

  17. 22 hours ago, SinisterDeath said:

Definitely. Some people I know only heard positive. I only heard the absolute worst about it. (A lot of hate from the alt-right as well)

The siloing of movie opinions has begun...people moderate their opinions to fit in with their friends.
