  1. I look at it a bit differently than the above thoughts.

in WoT, the Aes Sedai have been the ultimate authority for millennia, resulting in  different gender dynamics than we, the reader, can really relate. This extends past the White Tower—Andoran politics, Ebou Dar home life, etc…

it is easy for our ethnocentrism to read the characters through our own cultural lens, but they just have a different cultural understanding. This is less about the narrator’s reliability as it is the reader’s.

Also, I'm about to go learn how to stab people woth swords ? ? ? Beware

I'd say I'm impervious to being tackled, but my kids prove that to be untrue on a regular basis.

I'm not afraid of the stabbity bit though since you haven't learned how yet! ;)

  3. I keep on getting the urge to go back to school... went a different route than I thought so my MA doesn't have any professional purpose, so I've thought about an MBA. But then I look at my student loan debt and just take free SQL courses and read leadership/management/business book instead

  4. Life is good! In the time since I stepped away, I bought a house, got 3 promotions at work, had another kid, sold house, bought new, better house, and am now happily expanding my home shop so I can build things! I did discover that gluten causes me tons of problems so I unfortunately have to avoid all the food places that I probably should be avoiding anyways, but now that I have a house with room for a freezer, we can do healthier food planning anyways.

  5. Over the last year, I have had to transition to being gluten-free. First because we found out my daughter has Celiac (so our house is now free from cross-contamination), and second because as we did research, I discovered 100% of my undiagnosed health problems fit Celiac and went away when I stopped having gluten.

That said... anyone have any beer recommendations that are gluten-free? If you know of any, especially if they aren't on the dry end of beers or are flavored (ginger in beer... yum!), I'd love to try it!

That's hardly a youth orchestra, now isn't it? haha

I wish I were still a baby I feel decidedly old lately... *sighs* I've been trying to figure out how long I've been on DM but I don't think it's possible... *sighs* I can't remember if I originally joined in 2004 or 2005... or maybe before then...

You are NOT allowed to call yourself old :P It harms my state of denial!

  8. I'm expanding my horizons by dipping into mass market apple ales. I like Redd's green apple. Maybe not impressive to a "beer snob" but I finally found a "beer" that I actually enjoy drinking all the way through!

There is some local beer with apricot flavor made here in Utah I've tried as well though that was pretty good.

  9. Jea, you can't judge sushi on one experience.

    Just... do me a favor.

    If you like spicy:

Get raw tuna sushi, spread a very thin layer of wasabi, a couple slices of ginger on top, and dip in soy sauce.

    If you don't like spicy:

Any kind with cream cheese, some ginger, dipped in soy sauce.

I don't like raw seafood very much, and not all sushi is for me, but certain kinds are soooo good.

Reminds me... when I was in Korea, a family friend from Seoul took me out to a very posh seafood restaurant. After I found out that this high-end restaurant served raw delicacies... it was a very interesting night, and I proved that I can be gracious and polite!
