  1. Much like Occams whiskey bottle, I hated reading about some of the situation that characters were in.

Tops on the list for me...

    -  How many candles the Rebel AS had.

    -  The various stories about the Dark One's touch on the world, like grain going bad.

    -  I didn't mind Faile's point of view on her captivity, but Perrin's point of view was boring.

    -  Elayne's ascension to the throne

    -  Morgase keeping her identity hidden

  2. well Asan'gar was manipulating Egwene, but besides giving her headaches doesn't seem like she did much.

And that is one story line that I wish would have been flushed out more.  I would have traded seemingly endless chapters about food spoiling and waning candle supplies to learn what Halima was doing.

  3. I would have changed it up only slightly.

Let Gawyn head off to find Demandred using the bloodrings.  While he is going there, Egwene dies.  So now Gawyn is filled with the warder rage.  The bloodrings plus the warder rage lets Gawyn succeed, but he still dies.  So the body count remains the same.

Galad shouldn't have ever fought Demandred.  He always does what is right, and that was not "right" in the grand scheme of things.  I viewed Galad's attempt at Demandred as selffish.

Lan had already accomplished enough at the Gap and then again at FoM.  Killing Demandred just seemed like another accomplishment that gets lost in everything he did.

  4. He emphatically said that Thom could not channel. However, the caveat to that is that it can be interpreted to mean that he can't channel NOW, and it is possible that he could learn.

I couldn't locate the related quote, but I thought it was about Thom's fight with the myrddraal in EotW. People were wondering if the blue flashes were related to Thom channeling. RJ at the tie said that Thom did not channel in his fight with the myrddraal. It wasn't worded in a way (that I remember) that Thom couldn't channel, just that he didn't channel in that fight.

  5. When an AS has more than one Warder, are the Warders aware of each other as she is of them?

I'm thinking of someone like Alanna, who had two Warders before she Bonded Rand - Ihvon and Owein. Owein was killed by WCs in TSR31; I'm wondering if Ihvon felt that.

But I'm really wondering about Rand's three in that triple Bond. Is any of them aware of the other two? And are any of them aware of Alanna?

Ihvon would have felt Alanna's pain and suffering when she lost Owein. Bascially, the surviving warder would know that something traumatic happened, but he/she wouldn't know the specifics of it.

  6. The scene where Alanna bonds Rand always angers me. I think Rand didn't lay the smack down for a couple reasons: 1) they were women; 2) He was angry but LTT was more baffled and chocked. Rand did take out his anger on the girls from the Two Rivers and scared the heck out of them.

The beauty of the bond is that Rand feels how Alanna is feeling through the bond. It is mentioned several times that he knows she's been crying.

    Several points to consider:

    - If Alanna is harmed or killed, Rand feels the pain and will be taken with a "Death rage" if she dies.

    - Rand gets the warder bond gifts as a result of the bond. His senses and stamina are enhanced, which explains why he can do so much without sufficient rest.

    - It is difficult for Rand to hurt women, Alanna included.

    - Rand needs Alanna or the Pattern would not have woven her to do such a thing to Rand. But this is just speculation.

You know, we don't know if Male channelers get a death rage if they're bonded. I wonder if we'll find out.

It was done for the pattern, it helped him survive the kidnapping plot.

Also, since Rand has four bond holders, does losing 25% of them only mean a "mildly irritated" rage instead of a death rage?

  7. Do the Seanchan prophecies determine successful invasion of Randland in its entirety?
The current books revealed less of the Essanik Cycle than of the Karaethon Cycle. The revealed portion does not explicitly tell one way or the other on that.

The Seanchan people seem to think that the Dragon Reborn would serve them.

The Empress (may she live forever), the Crystal Throne, and the higher ups in the Seanchan society seem to think the Dragon Reborn will server them, but then again, that is probably the corrupted version of the prophecies. What the common Seanchan folk believe, I don't know we ahve really been given that information.

  8. Do I remember correctly that the bond enhances a persons strength and stamina somehow? If so I wonder if Rand could have survived some of his physical injuries without the bonding. Maybe the pattern forced Alanna to it because Rand needed that enhancement to survive his comming trials?

you are right, it does give extra strenght/stamina. Also that the pattern probably nudged it a bit, with him being Ta'veren it was likely forced. Still, not a good thing to do,but it does help redeem her.

    @Pinzarn re: struggle for control.

Simply put, there was no struggle. Alanna had no chance of controlling him, he is ta'veren, the strongest channeler in the world, the Dragon Reborn, and insane, he was far too powerful for her and far too angry. Alanna is slightly above average, at best.

I would have traded pages from the Faile/Shaido/Perrin and also from the Dark One's touch on the world for more pages on any kind of struggle. I was always hoping for Rand eventually turning the bond around on her and making Alanna his puppet.

  9. I never understood why it happened in the story. Like what happens when she dies? If the bond isn't passed, Warders rarely survive right? Seems like a HUGE plot hole. Of course it kinda means she's not a Darkfriend. Because if the shadow knew, they would use her.

Given the nature of the bonding process, I would have been hard pressed to pass up the oppurtunity as well. What she did was no worse than the kidnapping that the Reds attempted. Simply put, AS were trying to control and track the Dragon Reborn. Unfortunately for Alanna, she didn't have the will to control Rand through the bond. Don't forget that the bond carries some Compulsion-like abilities for the bond holder.

I think from a plot stand point, there could have been more page-time spent on the bond and Rand vs Alanna for control of it. I realize that the bond served a couple of rescue purposes, but something this powerful went nearly neglected for the entire series.

  10. Siuan's obfuscation does not make her _more_ to blame for his actions. There's only one person responsible for Gawyn's actions. I realize that it was difficult for him, and that is also portrayed in the text when he runs into them. While I'm glad that he spared the life of Siuan (I can't imagine he would have killed Leane or Min), that does not in any way free him of responsibility for jumping into the fray and slaughtering the warders some of whom he had trained with and had no reason to have antipathy against. There are some redeeming factors, but the responsibility for his choices, fueled by personal dislike, can not be laid on Siuan who merely did what she had to in order to protect the DR and fight the BA. Had she prioritized the feelings of the spoiled First Prince of Andor over those, things would certainly have been more disastrous.

I would not say that he slaughtered anyone. Yes, he fought and won, but I wouldn't say he "slaughtered" them. He joined the fight for the side that he thought (as did most) at the time was legally in power. He fought those that were rebelling against the legal (as most thought at the time) regime.

To me, his only wrong was joining a fight in which he was not officially a part of.

  11. Don't forget that Fortuna has bascially abandoned the Seanchan lands to set up the Empire in Randland. Also, not everyone has an issue with the Seanchan rule.

I see most of it depending on the reading of the Prophocies. If Fortuna (via Mat) comes around to the throne kneels to Rand, then I would consider the Randland Seanchan as another country based in the lands that they hold.

  12. I have some questions about balefire and its effects. If the speculation about Asmodean's killer being Graendel is correct. Is it possible we might see Asmodean alive again? How much power does it take and is the timeline even feasible?

Also, How did Rahvin's death effect Morgase and Caemlyn or did it not erase his life long enough to matter? It seemed as if Rand gave it everything he had when he zapped him, so I figured it removed him for quite a while.

It was mentioned somewhere that when both side used balefire as a weapon, days worth of the pattern were burned away. How long ago was Asmo killed? Months at least. The volume of balefire needed would be staggering.

Rahvin's influence on Camelyn was only balefired back to the beginning of the battle. Sure more balefire could have been used to erase a couple days worth of influence, but as mentioned above, eliminating months worth of influence doesn't seem possible.

Also remember that when a thread is burned out of the pattern, all of the connecting/related threads are impacted as well. As a result the entire pattern could unravel if you burned out months of someone's thread.

  13. Are there any group of people that are immune to being a Darkfriend? Ok, immune might be too strong of a word, how about we don't think there have ever been any hints of Darkfriends in this group? Two groups come to mind:

Randland Ogier - I joked with a friend that Loial must be a darkfriend without any real proof other than it made us both laugh. Have there been any Ogier DF?

    Seanchan Ogier?

Blackwatch Guard (is that the correct name for the Seanchan Royal Family Elite Gaurd)?

  14. Has anyone ever written a Rand Al'Thor = Luke Skywalker analysis? If so, where can I read it? I know that seems like a really strange query, but I was thinking about it last night and the parallels are pretty pronounced (alliterative!). There must be some Star Wars geeks in here, am I right? If not, I may have to write it myself. Some of the juxtapostions are spot-on (Moiraine is Obi-Wan, The Dark One is Palpatine). Sometimes, not so much (Ogier for Ewok? It kind of works...). C'mon. He even Walked Across the Sky! (At Falme).

Many stories with the good versus evil with a sprinkle of special powers can be compared to one another. I am a huge Star Wars fan. A good friend turned me on to WoT by using the various SW/WoT comparisons.

  15. Are Bair and Perrin the only non-channelers (excluding Slayer) who can enter T'A'R?

The late Seana was also a non-channeler DreamWalker - there could be others, since people can randomly do it once in a while.

I always thought that Elyas could enter T'A'R, but now that I think about it, has he ever been mentioned in conjunction with T'A'R? I just assumed the Elyas could enter the Wolf Dreams as well.
