Welcome to my first blog as the new Weekly Roundup Blogger! I’m excited for this opportunity to spread the word of what’s going on in our fantastic Social Groups.

For those of you that do not yet know me, I’m Moon Sedai, and have been a member of Dragonmount for four years.

Because it has been a few weeks since the last Weekly Roundup, I'm going to tell you what's been happening around Dragonmount during the month of June. 

Ever find something weird on Craig's List or Ebay and want to show it off? This month, Shayol Ghul is running a Craig’s List/Ebay summer event. The link I provided is the index link for the event, and is being updated with each new event. There are weird item hunts, personals, an Amazing Race game, and even a thread entitled "Dope or Nope?"  where people can discuss the experience of purchasing used items from the Internet. 

The Aiel Raids are in full-swing this month. Much like the Aiel characters of the books, our Aiel Social Group is taking the opportunity to "visit" the other social groups in the form of "raids," where they host a variety of threads throughout Dragonmount.

The Black Tower is hosting a One Power tournament. Members of the Black Tower are pitted against each other in a battle, fighting with their saidin skills to see who will emerge victorious. 

The Band of the Red Hand is hosting an interesting poll and discussion: what item of Mat Cauthon's is the most useful thing he acquires throughout the tale of The Wheel of Time series? Here's your chance to answer the poll and weigh in your answer to this fascinating question. 

Well, that's the big news for the Month of June. I look forward to telling you all about July's events in our next Weekly Roundup.

I am calling for applications for one person to join my staff of bloggers. Applications for this position will be open until Monday, June 17th.

Description of the Job Position:

The position currently open is for the Weekly Roundup blogger.  This person will be responsible for doing a brief recap of some of the important events/threads happening on the forums.  Please look here for past examples of this column.

Job Duties for Both Front Page Blogger Position:

1. Bloggers are expected to produce content in their respective areas for the front page once per week. They must be able to meet deadlines in a timely manner.

2. Bloggers occasionally will be called upon to assist the Front Page Admin with brainstorming new ideas for features.

3. Bloggers are expected to dedicate time each week to the Front Page Bloggers Staff Board and the DM Staff Board. As members of DM Staff, they act as representatives of the members of DM and their input is vital in the decision making process. Bloggers should be actively engaged in discussions on staff boards.

4. Bloggers must be able to give at least a 6 month commitment of approximately 5 hours per week. LOAs will come up, of course.

Anyone who thinks they can fulfill the requirements may apply. Strong candidates are people who possess the following qualities: efficiency, writing ability, organizational skills, creativity, maturity, and the ability to work well with others.

Welcome back!  Before we begin, I want to make a couple of announcements.  First, the blogger application deadline has passed, and I will be revealing the new bloggers shortly!  Second, I know that there are some Memory Keeper reports that didn't make it up during my LOA; the person who was covering for me did not have a chance to get them up.  I'll be gradually sprinkling those in between the regular blogs during the next couple of weeks.

A Memory of Light left a lot of unanswered questions about the Seanchan.  What will become of them now that the Last Battle is over?  Come share your theories in our A Memory of Light Full Spoiler Discussion forum.  Please remember not to talk about spoilers elsewhere on the forums at this time.

There's still time to join in the Aiel Social Group's March Culture of the Month discussion.  They have been discussing the Cherokee.  This thread is full of interesting and well-researched information.

We're back!  Our book tour hiatus is over, and I'm also back from my travels.  Things should be back to normal around here shortly.

The book tour blog hiatus on the front page is over, so that means I need to flesh out my staff again.

We've got less than ten days until the eagerly anticipated release of A Memory of Light! Due to the upcoming release, things will be operating a little differently here on the front page during the book tour. We'll put the regular blog features on hiatus during the signings since we will be posting the Memory Keeper signing reports during that time. This means that starting next week, we'll be starting the hiatus. This hiatus will be in effect until the beginning of March. However, if my bloggers get bored, they may have some (non-spoiler) blogs for you during the book tour gap in late January.

We have created a new board for all the A Memory of Light spoiler discussions. If you have read the book and wish to discuss any part of it, you will need to restrict the spoilers to the A Memory of Light Full Spoiler Discussion forum. If you have read any of the pre-release materials, such as Chapters 1 and 2, but not the rest of the book, you may continue to discuss those in the A Memory of Light Pre-Release Spoiler Material Discussion forum.

The Aiel Social Group has introduced a new feature. Each month, they will have a discussion about one of the world's cultures, featuring guest speakers from each of the discussed cultures. This time, they are discussing Russia.

This month, the Black Tower Social Group is talking about random acts of kindness. What random acts of kindness have you done for others? What random acts of kindness have others done for you?

It's Holiday Mayhem over at the Shayol Ghul Social Group! The Black Ajah has planned some creative events for you, including games and a "Secret Stabber" message exchange to show your friends you care. Watch this thread for a guide to events as they are posted.

It's a role play featuring Wolfkin! I haven't seen one of these for awhile. Check out Finding the Wolves from our role players.

On November 27, Dragonmount was hit by an overwhelming cyber attack. The result was similar to a "Distributed Denial of Service" (DDOS) attack, and resulted in our servers being overwhelmed with tens of thousands of page requests within a very condensed amount of time. Our web servers are powerful and well maintained. It's a testament to their resilience that they didn't immediately meltdown. Despite seeming to be offline, they never crashed, and immediately recovered as soon as we blocked incoming traffic. In the end though, even good web servers like ours succumb to these type of attacks. Because the overall assault originated from thousands of infected PC's across the world (mostly, if not entirely all Windows machines), it was impossible for us to simply deny a specific machine or IP address.

I want to make it clear that no data from our servers was compromised or lost. Your passwords are safe and encrypted on a database server unaffected by the attack. Dragonmount does not directly process or store any credit card information, so nothing related to our online store was anywhere near at risk.

People have asked our staff why we were targeted. There is probably no easy answer to that. Most likely, we were not singled out for any reason other than the fact that we are a medium-sized, established website with a large user base. The specific distributed attack that affected us is known to seek out sites just like ours. This specific one is too weak to tackle huge sites like Google or Facebook, so it seeks out sites like ours that seem like easy prey.

They will not find us so easy next time.

To combat this issue, we've significantly increased the security settings on the DM web servers, and also invested in an industry-leading security service. I won't go so far as to say this will never happen again, but I can assure you that we've literally done everything we can, with the resources we have, to make the site as secure and stable as possible.

Thank you for your patience and support. As a whole, the you continue to amaze me with your kindness. On behalf of the entire DM staff, I want to thank everyone who emailed us with ideas, suggestions, offers of help, or just friendly encouragement. Special thanks to Brent Wentworth for his outstanding assistance during the most stressful part of the downtime.

Fourteen years ago today Dragonmount first went online. We had only a handful of members, a couple of message boards and absolutely no idea where this ride would take us. Today we are the largest Wheel of Time fansite, with thousands of members, and over two hundred message boards being posted to daily. We've gone from being excited to have more than one person at a time online, to working directly with Tor Books, Team Jordan and Brandon Sanderson to bring you the latest in Wheel of Time news and community updates. The experience has been frankly humbling, for both Jason and myself. We are truly part of something greater than ourselves at Dragonmount.

Before we begin, I want to give you a heads up about our upcoming blog hiatus.  Since Dragon*Con is this weekend and a lot of us are gone then, we won't be having a Fan Art Friday this week, a weekly roundup next week, or a theory blog next week.  Everything will be back to normal after that.  If you're going to Dragon*Con and would like to meet some of our Admins and Staff, feel free to stop by the Wheel of Time track and say hi!
