Dónal Finn to Replace Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon for Season 2

  • Actor Dónal Finn will replace Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon for season 2 of Amazon Prime's upcoming Wheel of Time TV show.

Deadline Hollywood reported today that actor Dónal Finn, known for various acting roles including in The Witcher, will replace Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon for season 2 and beyond of Amazon Prime's upcoming Wheel of Time TV show. This news has been confirmed by Amazon Studios.

This is a major surprise because it's almost unheard of to re-cast a main character before season 1 of the show even airs. As of this time, there's no reason given for Harris' departure. It's highly unlikely that it was due to a poor acting performance. If that were the case, then that would've likely been identified very early on during the production of Season 1 and corrected. Harris finished the entirely of season 1. The acting performances of the entire cast were highly praised by showrunner Rafe Judkins and the rest of the team.

In situations like this, it would probably take a major reason for the young actor to be unavailable for season 2. We will not speculate at this time, but overall, the thoughts and well-wishes of the entire Dragonmount community go out to Barney. We hope he is healthy and well.

This re-casting likely caused major headaches for the production of Season 2, which is currently being filmed in the Czech Republic and other European countries.

Ever since I read this series, I was always exciting to even hear of ANY possibility of it being a TV series. And of course I and so many of us are so excited to see this world come alive. I would not say I am worried per-se at this time, but it certainly is interesting seeing a development like this.

As far as the trailer goes, they can be so deceiving in so many ways. I think they are meant to in some ways! I do hope we can have many surprises and enjoy the series!

Where do you find so many tall people who can also act?

Ya, i cant argue your logic. I'm a purist and as a result I always expect too much

Umm Josha is 6'2 I believe which is tall for an actor most are quite short. Marcus is taller at 6'4. But I don't think it matters too much with Marcus being taller, just as long as Josha is tall enough and feels like Rand when finally see him. As for Mat, it's very disheartening that this has happened, and I'm hopeful, but I've got a bad feeling for sure about this. And this new guy just doesn't feel (look) like Mat. Too pale. Wrong color hair. Eyebrows kind of weird looking or maybe just to big? He does have a devilish look to him and photos don't do a personality justice at all, so we'll have to see. But it's just going to be so jarring for us as book fans and for the curious general public. So disappointed at the negative connotations and consequences of this. This could be so disruptive eventually that it might kill the greenlight for the 3rd season. Praying to the Light and the Lord for sure!

Oh, Mother's milk in a cup! Why all the doubts about the Emonds Field 5 based on millisecond clips? Let's just wait for the show and see how the actors portray the characters in this adaptation, why don't we...

Hugely disappointed in the recasting.  Barney Harris imo has a sex appeal that lights up his scenes.  Something the show desperately needs.  The new guy just doesn't, imo.  No way this guy will be a romantic scoundrel in a believable way.  Perhaps the new turning of the wheel will portray Matt as homosexual?

Yes after watching 3 episodes Donel Finn has got huge Shoes to fill, Barney has been superb

"Spoilers"

I think we will see Mat getting healed from the Dagger in S2 E1 and they can write in the change in appearance and difference in Donel's take on the character.

I really enjoyed the WoT book series - well, up to about book 6 or so, then I felt the next 8 were mostly padding with hundreds of new characters brought in.

That said, what I really DIDN'T enjoy in the books were the way some of the women were portrayed, especially Egwene and sometimes Nynaeve.  As a woman, I felt that the writer didn't really get women but was trying to, and when he was showing them in positions of influence, his solution was to make them obnoxious and unlikeable.

Anyway, I am enjoying Amazon's Wheel of Time show way more than I expected, and I like how Egwene and Nynaeve here have been humanized.  Moiraine is portrayed fabulously.  Contrary to some on this board, I actually didn't like how Mat was characterized, and don't mind seeing how the new actor will portray him.

I do sometimes wonder though how easily people who didn't read the books understand what's going on in the show.  So much has been compressed, including the backstory. For example,  Loial the Ogier in episode 7 mysteriously becomes involved with getting the group through the Ways, but for someone who never read the books, there's no real explanation why this is so, and once they arrive at their destination, Loial disappears, quite the deus ex machina character.

Oh well.  On to the Season 1 finale; hope Season 2 comes sooner rather than later.

Ok, I’m halfway through Season 1. I’ve read the books and know the backstory. I am enjoying the portrayals of Nynaeve, Lan and Moraine but am sad that they have missed a lot of details in the story.  My husband and son haven’t read the books but are really enjoying the series. They don’t know what they’re missing but ignorance is bliss here and the general audience who haven’t read the books might be feeling this too.
I read that Barney had to leave because he wouldn’t get vaccinated against Covid-19 which was in his contract. He and Novak can start a therapy group together?
