JenniferL

On January 18th, Tor Books plans to release the complete graphic novel, New Spring. New Spring is a prequel to the Wheel of Time series. It was first published as a short story in 1998, then expended to a full novel in 2004. A comic book adaption followed shortly thereafter, though it was plagued with production and delivery issues. The story focuses on Moiraine Damodred, an Accepted in the White Tower and Lan Mandragoran, an officer in the Aiel War.

Tor has given us five copies of the graphic novel to give away here on Dragonmount. To enter just post below with your favorite memory of Lan and/or Moiraine from any book (Towers of Midnight spoilers allowed) by midnight Saturday, January 15th Eastern time. We regret that this contest is only open to fans in the United States.

You can pre-order the book now from Amazon.com or find it at your local bookstore.

One of my favorite moments, not just of Lan, but in the entire series, is in Winter's Heart. It is one of the defining moments in the series for me, of both Lan and Rand, in showing Lan's recognition that Rand's life must outweigh his own, and his duty is to let Rand go. And Rand, no matter what he says or does afterwards (particularly in The Gathering Storm), shows his true character here.

"Let go," Lan said quietly. He looked up at Rand, his eyes cold and hard, no expression on his face. "Let go."

"When the sun turns green," Rand told him.

If he could just pull the other man up a little, enough to catch the eave . . .

Whatever his fingers had caught broke with a sharp snap, and the alley rushed up to meet them.

Definitely my favorite memory is when Lan trains Rand to meet Siuan for the first time in Shienar.

My favorite would have to be either when she is walking throught the Green Ajah quarters and she sees Elyas sparing, or when she starts pulling pranks on Lan :)

I also like that Moiraines testing is included in the book cause it empahzises just how much harder Nynaeves really was.

I like it when Lan sends Nynaeve love through the bond as he charges into battle in Towers of Midnight, and how is constantly placing random women above himself, Malkieri custums are so cute ^_^

I liked, in New Spring, the cultural misunderstanding between Lan and Moiraine over his refusal to meet her eyes. It was all the more poignant in light of our knowledge of the intimacy they'll have 20 years later, when they'll be able to understand each other's slightest gesture.

My favorite scene involving Moiraine and Lan has to be in the beginning of The Fires of Heaven. There's a point where they discuss why Moiraine has chosen to follow and help Rand, and they talk about some of the ways that she could have acted but how they would have ended horribly. It's interesting just to get that secret and manipulative Aes Sedai view from Moiraine, we're not used to seeing it to that extent in her. Lan looks to her as to what will happen to them and it's fairly tense. There's also a moment where it's mentioned that Moiraine has arranged for Lan's bond to be passed to Nynaeve, which is both sad and sweet. And we know exactly where that's going.

My favorite Moiraine moment is at the end of EotW when she is listening to Rand and Egwene and saying "the prophecies will be fulfilled. The Dragon is reborn." That gives me the chills everytime I read it. I have many favorite Lan moments but one that springs to mind is when he looks at Rand flatly and says "I hope your worth this sheepherder." Its a perfect summary of their relationship in EotW.

Hmmm....Well the scenes in NS give her a more human feel, but at the same time, almost feel a little forced(and humorous).

For Moraine...definitely the determined way she went about tasks that she knew she had to after the Ter'Angreal in the Stone. Going to Rhiudean, attacking Lanfear, etc. She knew the outcome, yet never hesitated to do what needed done.

For Lan...not the teaching of Rand before the Amyrlin, but the defiance that the teaching meant for him. Attempting to make sure he was not a puppet to the Aes Sedai.

Moiraine torturing Lan of course. I thought all the things she was doing to him were hilarious

Throughout the entire series thus far there are 3 women that have embodied what it means to be Aes Sedai: Cadsuane Melaidhrin, Moiraine Damodred, and Eqwene al'Vere. However, Moiraine surpasses the other two due to one scene from her testing for the shawl. To be Aes Sedai is to be truely serene despite one's surroundings. During Moiraine's testing she came to a task where she had to face trollocs attacking a walled courtyard while she completed the required weave to continue her testing. During this test, before she ever officially became Aes Sedai, she became the embodiment of Aes Sedai while she danced serenely across the courtyard, blowing trollocs to smithereens with fireballs. That is not only one of the best scenes with Moiraine, it is one of the best scenes in the series...period.

My favorite memory of Lan is when he is teaching Rand the sword on the beacon tower in Shienar. Not just that he is teaching him but that he isn't pulling any punches with the man he knows is the savior of the world. To me it shows that Lan willing to do whatever it takes to make Rand the best he can in the short time he has with him. It shows he has his priorities straight.

My favorite memory is when Lan prepares Rand to meet the Amyrlin for the first time. He takes a real fatherly stance in helping Rand. Also I thought it was interesting afterwards when Moiraine asks Lan about it, it seemed she was surprised that Lan took it upon himself to help Rand. Also I enjoyed the parts where Moiraine seemed confused as to how she should feel about Nynaeve. She knows she doesn't love Lan the way that Nynaeve does, but she isn't used to the idea of having his thoughts stray.

My favorite scene of Moiraine's is when they are in Baerlon in EotW. Rand is dancing in the common room and finds himself suddenly swinging Moiraine around in the jig. She doesn't do anything here, but just picturing how that would look puts Moiraine in such a normal, feminine light and you see her softer side.

One of my hands down favorite scenes of the entire series is the chapter titled Mashiara with Lan and Nyneave. Seeing Nyneave struggle through her block and knowing that Lan is on his way, then Lan rescues her and to me it completed a bond that wouldn't be broken no matter what. Kind of that cliche that love will heal all.

Lan and Ryne battling on the Balcony in "When to Surrender" as Moiraine tries to stop Merean. The way Lan is willing to sacrifice himself, the way he faces and defeats his best friend and a more skilled swordsman, and the way this brings him into the big picture as a key member of Team Light all cement this one for me.

For Lan, what else? "Death is lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain." Really changed Rand's whole outlook.

As for Moiraine, seeing her vulnerable/tender at the end of ToM was great, because you really picture her as this Gandalf figure until you see the full extent of her love for Thom. It brings her back down to Earth, as it were. Definitely one of my favorite characters.

My favorite Lan and Moiraine moment is in Eye of the World when they are fleeing Edmond's Field from the Trollocs and Draghar. I love the intensity of those first few chapters when Moiraine destroys the ferry on the way to Berlain where they meet Min.

sigh i got here to late to get it but ill share anyway~ for some reason i cant get out of my head the part were lan just turns around and walks away when he finds out that moiraine dies, you can tell hes hurting in side and threw randy's eyes it looks like he just moves on, i think he new this would happen~ (bad memory~), now thats of lan! Moiraine is a whole different story, I dont really have one favorite moment of hers but i can name off a few ones i find fasinating, like when rand races to mats door to save him from the darkhounds and after they talk moiraine walks in and Mat pratically screams when she walks in with not a care in the world that mat is starch naked!(hahaha) and then mabey when, in new spring the way she always acts around lans men, threw lans eyes shes so queenly~ haha! Oh and the relationship with her and thom~ at the time when i read it i didnt really get it, but there so mellow and odd when there together (i still dont get it)! well besides mat lan is my second favorite character~ he was number one until we saw mat with tuon ( he is so rediculous). OHHH! I remember now! i love the part were lan just saved nynave and he blushes hahahaha i wont go more in detail~ sigh i miss the book now i think ill read them again!! YEAY MOTIVATION!!

My favorite Moiraine memory is actually quite recent. I really enjoyed reading the catching up of Moiraine, Mat, and Thom. Something about three people resting around the calming peacefulness of talking around a campfire after a daring raid of a supernatural world just speaks to me, I guess.

My favorite is when Lan kneels and swears to be Moiraine's Warder, and she bonds him. He seemed so torn, but how sad it would have been if the two hadn't teamed up. He cares for Moiraine so much, and she's very fair to him. They may not show it often, but since they bonded, I think their mutual respect and friendship has grown so much.

My most recent favorite scene of Moraine is when she is found in the tower of the Snakes and Foxes, after books and books of not having as a main character in the story. It was refreshing to have her back and to see her interactions with Thom and Mat. I can't wait to see her reunion with Lan and to see how he reacts to having her back. I also can't wait to see Moraine back in action against the Shadow.

My favorite Lan scene is in the "Blood Calls Blood" chapter of "The Great Hunt." Rand is nervous about his impending meeting with the Amyrlin, and Lan instructs him on how to carry himself. His best line is "There is one rule, above all others, for being a man. Whatever comes, face it on your feet." We see another side of Lan here, and really begin to see that he is his own person apart from, and not attached to, Moiraine.

As for Moiraine, that is a tough one because she is my favorite female character, perhaps even more so than Verin. But I really love her in "The Way Out of the Mountains" chapter of "The Dragon Reborn." At this point, we almost think we've gotten used to Moiraine, as does Perrin. But then she goes fishing, and despite Perrin cautioning her about the difficulty of catching fish, she murmurs "as difficult as that?" She then catches several fish, with ease, and seems to enjoy herself. We see a very amusing, human side to her here. But shortly thereafter, as they are traveling, Perrin thinks perhaps he can hold his own against her, and not let her push him around. "He tried refusing, resisting, but it was hard to resist when she made a reasonable suggestion, and a small one at that. Only there was always another suggestion behind it, as reasonable and small as the first, and then another. The simple force of her presence, the strength of her gaze, made it difficult to protest. Her dark eyes would catch him at the moment he opened his mouth. A lift of her eyebrow to suggest he was being a rude, a surprised widening of her eyes that he could object to so small a request, a level stare that held in it everything that was Aes Sedai, all these things could make him hesitate, and once he hesitated there was never recovering any lost ground." I think this chapter shows her as one of the deepest characters in the series, both incredibly human and more Aes Sedai than anyone, even Cadsuane, could hope to be.

Hmm...while my words may not be as flowery as other's, I'd still like to say what my most memorable were. My most memorable with Lan and Moiraine together would have to be either her sicking the bugs on him, or her attempting to take Lan's sword and getting tossed in the lake for her troubles. Good times...good times. :)

I like when Moiraine and Lan first show up in the Two Rivers, and the villagers find out that she's Aes Sedai, and then she tells them that they are of the blood of Manatheren while twirling her staff with flames coming out of the ends of it. How she takes the situation and actually turns it into a teaching moment that pays big dividends later when the Two Rivers is attacked again.
