Dear Robert Jordan,

Today I read your final book. The end of The Wheel of Time came to my hands nearly twenty years after I first picked up its beginning. It was a story well told, a story whose ending lived up to the promises made so very long ago. I’m writing in order to tell you a little about it.

What I’ve loved most about your grand story throughout the years is how true it is. Those who cherish the fantasy genre understand this. Within a story about fictitious people, in fictitious worlds, with conflicts that never actually happened, we have the opportunity to explore what makes us real. The Wheel of Time has, for me, and I suspect for thousands of others, done that better than any of its peers. One of its most fundamental lessons is that time is a wheel, and that endings are simply new beginnings if you have the courage to turn and look the other way.

When you died, I had the privilege to visit your home--your Charleston, your Two Rivers. I sat in your chair and looked at your beloved books. I breathed the air you breathed, and I understood a part of you. I met your friends and family, and saw how they defined yet another part. And so today, as I read the ending of your magnum opus, I yet again found a piece of you. In those final, beautiful moments, with tears in my eyes, I understood. I saw why you wanted to write the story. I see the point you were trying to make. And I laughed. It may not have been what people expected, but, to quote Stephen King, it was the right ending.

And a glorious one.

The Wheel of Time books have ended for me. I cannot deny the bittersweet emotions that brings. But a strong ending gives more meaning to the journey that came before it. Sure, I can pick apart small nuances of this final book that weren’t perfect. Some little parts may not have rung as true as they could have. But by and large, it delivered in a big way.

If only you could have seen the specific way in which it turned out. I loved each character’s ending, even if it made me cry. I celebrated victories and gasped at the raw, visceral failures. Rand and Egwene shined the brightest, as I could have only hoped and expected. And there’s that one chapter. Holy smokes, RJ. 50,000 words? Really? Wow.

You never met Brandon Sanderson; most likely never heard his name in your lifetime. But I can tell you, RJ, he did an amazing job. He was your steward, and carried your banner proudly into the maw of Shayol Ghul in order to ensure oblivion did not consume the series’ ending. You would’ve be so proud of him. I sure am. A lot of fans are. If you ever meet him, in an unknown place, time, or life, give him a hearty handshake of thanks, and buy him <strike>a beer</strike> some Magic cards.

You should also know that Maria and Alan, your assistants, remained faithful every step of the way. For five years they’ve painstakingly studied, analyzed, corrected, and loved this final book. As I read it, I could clearly see their influence, and I’m so thankful we had them. It wouldn’t have been this good without them. If it would have even been at all.

The fans, too, did their part. A small few helped with continuity, and a larger group honors your work every day through their service to the community and franchise. And yet another group, the largest, which spans the whole world, are fans who live and breathe your work. They share it with their friends. They strive to live up to the positive ideals you wrote about. They toast to your memory, and read your books to their children. They prove that a work of fantasy literature can inspire people of any nationality, religion, or political leaning to agree upon something they hold dear to their hearts.

Your various publishers have honored your memory by printing your books, and continually putting fresh paint (literally, in the case of the covers) on this series. They’ve sometimes faced criticism, but in the end did you proud. Tom Doherty and his team have led that charge. I spoke to Tom recently and he reminded me that he does it because he’s a fan and a friend of yours.

Finally, and most significantly of all, I want you to know that Harriet has been nothing short of amazing. You already know this in a way that I don’t need to describe, but her love for you is inspiring. She’s worked tirelessly since your passing to finish this book. She’s been your captain, and sailed the ship home. Next time I see her, I’ll give her a hug for you. I think a lot of other fans will, too.

The most extraordinary thing about all these people, from Harriet to the worldwide fans, is that collectively they underscore the very heart of this book. They prove that life truly imitates art, and vice versa. The Wheel of Time began with you. Its pages began with a single man walking down a ruined hallway. But in the end, the series proved bigger than you, and bigger than that man and his successor.

Yours is a story for the Ages. Some may criticize or belittle it, but its sheer scope and influence can’t be argued. The final pages may have been written, but it will live on in memory, community, and (let’s face it) franchise tie-ins. There are neither beginnings nor endings, right?

So, RJ, as I finish this letter that you’ll never read, I’m left only with final thanks. Thank you for sharing your vision with me. With all of us. For all the worldwide success and attention this book will bring, it still spoke to me on an intimate, personal level. Thank you for expressing the beauty of your life in these pages. Thank you for giving us what is quite simply the most epic ending to the grandest saga of our time.

Thank you for taking us upon a ride on the winds of time.

With sincerity, I remain,
Your Friend,
Jason Denzel

Jason@dragonmount.com

Brandon Sanderson has completed A Memory of Light, the fourteenth and final Wheel of Time novel. He posted a touching blog entry on his website describing his feelings on the subject, as well as his plans for the future.

"I've reached the end of the journey and set down my burdens. It's wonderful, relaxing, and solemn all at once. I love the Wheel of Time. It's also great to be done."

Brandon has completed and turned in the final major revision of the book to Harriet, Robert Jordan's widow and editor. She and her staff will complete final revisions and copyediting.

The hardcover and audiobook editions are scheduled to be released on January 8, 2013. The eBook will be released on April 9th.

I remember speaking to Brandon almost five years ago by phone. The first time we talked, he sounded excited and a little shell-shocked. He had yet to fly out to Charleston to meet Harriet, so he had no idea what was in store. He'd not read Robert Jordan's ending or other notes. I remember how nervous he was about whether or not Wheel of Time fans would accept him, or support him.

I talked to him again yesterday by phone, and I could hear the relief in his voice. The passion for the final book was still there. He's eager for people to read it, and seemed even more eager to finally be able to share Robert Jordan's final scenes with all of us.

There's no doubt in my mind that all Wheel of Time fans owe an enormous debt of gratidue to Brandon for his hard work in completing the series. Like you, I look forward to reading the book, and look forward to having him be a part of our community for years to come.

Thanks, Brandon.

This weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Brandon Sanderson did a reading from the first chapter of A Memory of Light. Luckily for those of us that can't be there, someone has put it on

for us.

For those who prefer to read, our friends at Theoryland have kindly put a transcript online here.

If you are avoiding spoilers, Sanderson spoke for a few minutes at the beginning. He assured the audience that the book should be on time for the January 8th release date and would not be split. You can read a summary of what we know about the final Wheel of Time novel here and discuss it on our forums here.

Over the last several months, there have been many exciting announcements about A Memory of Light, the highly anticipated final volume in The Wheel of Time series. In case you've missed our previous coverage, here's what we know so far.

Brandon Sanderson finished the first draft of the book on December 21st, 2011. It was immediately turned over to Team Jordan for review. Brandon anticipates needing at least a dozen drafts before the book is ready for publication.

Tor announced that the hardcover and audiobook releases will be on January 8th, 2013. The eBook release will be April 9th. If Tor follows their usual pattern, the paperback mass market release will be approximately one year after the hardcover release.

We anticipate that Brandon and Harriet McDougal will both go on a signing tour for the hardcover release, however no cities have been announced yet.

Also in December, series artist Darrell K. Sweet passed away, leaving the cover art for A Memory of Light unfinished. You can view his draft on our A Memory of Light info page.

Michael Whelan was announced as Mr. Sweet's replacement. More info about Mr. Whelan's cover can be found here. Tor.com has posted the full cover, as well as notes from Whelan on the process and some of his rough sketches.

Orbit Books, the UK publisher who publishes the WoT books, has also released their cover.

At this year's JordanCon, Harriet read to us a portion of the prologue of A Memory of Light. While no recordings were allowed, Tor and the Jordan estate have graciously allowed us to reprint the text of the preview. If Tor follows their usual pattern, there will be an eBook version of the complete prologue available for purchase sometime between now and the release date. Orbit has also released the jacket text for the book. We believe the same text will appear on the US editions as well. We have reprinted the text here for your convenience:

Check out Darrell K. Sweet's unfinished cover art for A Memory of Light.

Most fans are aware of Darrell K. Sweet's artwork, which graces the covers of the original U.S. edition Wheel of Time books. Regardless of what you think of the art itself, Mr. Sweet's imagery has become a recognized style deeply associated with the series.

Unfortunately, Mr. Sweet passed away before completing the book cover for A Memory of Light, the final book in the series. But this weekend at JordanCon 2012, we've been given the opportunity to see his first draft of the painting.

Click here or on the image to the right to see the full version.

In my personal opinion, I think this painting had the potential to be one of the finest in the series. Try and see past the obvious mistakes or omissions. The three women (presumably Elayne, Min, and Aviendha) would need some articulation to distinguish themselves from each other, and the "yin yang" isn't accurate. But those are the kinds of adjustments that Darrell would have made. It's been part of the process since the series began. While the details aren't accurate to the book, per se, this painting invokes some powerful emotions for me. I think we can all guess whose body that is at the top of the funeral bier!

With Mr. Sweet's passing, the final book cover will be painted by renowned artist Michael Whelan. Mr. Whelan is hard at work on the painting at this time. He will not be painting the same scene as Mr. Sweet. Be sure to follow our news, Twitter, or Facebook pages to see when that cover is revealed.

So, what do you think of this unfinished cover? Critical comments are welcome, but please keep things respectful at all times.

A Memory of Light will be released in hardcover and audiobook on January 8, 2013. Read the full details here.

Tor Books announced today that Michael Whelan, the celebrated award-winning artist known throughout the industry, will paint the book cover for A Memory of Light.

Mr. Whelan was previously commissioned to paint the eBook cover, but with the recent death of Darrell K. Sweet, he was asked to paint the US hardcover edition as well.

Mr. Whelan:

"I’m flattered to no end to have been asked to work on such a prestigious and popular project. My only regret is that it had to come under such unfortunate circumstances; I never would have accepted had Darrell been here to see the Wheel of Time saga to it’s completion. It will always remain a testament to his career, and I’m humbled to stand in his shadow for the work on the final volume."

The full announcement is available on Tor.com.

No release date for the cover has been announced. We will, of course, have links and full imagery once it's released.

Tor Books announced today that A Memory of Light, the fourteenth and final Wheel of Time novel, will be released on January 8, 2013. Update: The eBook will be released on April 9, 2013.

Here's the original press release:

The first novel in Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time®, The Eye of the World, was released on January 15, 1990. Now more than twenty years later, Tor Books is thrilled to announce the official publication date for the final novel in the series. A Memory of Light will release on January 8, 2013, in the final month of the Year of the Dragon.

A Memory of Light is one of the most important titles that Tor will ever publish. Many of the principal players have been involved with the series since its inception, including Publisher Tom Doherty and Editor Harriet McDougal, who worked with Robert Jordan on all of his books, and who is working with Brandon Sanderson, the writer finishing the series from Robert Jordan’s outline and his notes. This is a landmark publication not just for Tor but for millions of fans of the late Robert Jordan, who eagerly await the conclusion to his epic tale. Everyone involved with the project is committed to making this an ending to remember.

Over the next few seasons, Tor will continue to release new Wheel of Time material, including trade paperback editions of the early novels with new art, new graphic novel editions of the The Eye of the World comics, and other material related to A Memory of Light as we get closer to publication date.

Update (March 15): The January date listed is for the hardcover and audiobook editions of the book. The eBook will come out a few months later in April. This is consistent with what they did on Towers of Midnight.

Brandon Sanderson has launched a surprise online "hunt" which will reveal new content related to A Memory of Light, the final Wheel of Time novel.

As part of his book tour for The Alloy of Law, Brandon is giving away clues that reveal the location of 35 hidden WoT bumper stickers (shown here). These bumper stickers will be hidden throughout the bookstore where Brandon is scheduled to appear. Each has a written code on the back which will unlock exclusive content related to AMOL.

We don't know yet if the content is a chapter from the upcoming book, or something else. You can see the exclusive content on Brandon's website.

Earlier this week, Orbit, the UK publisher for The Wheel of Time series, released a video promoting a November 2012 release date for A Memory of Light. This prompted many fans to ask whether or not this was indeed the official release, especially as it contradicted earlier estimates that the book might be ready in time for a March 2012 release.

Blogger Adam Whitehead, of the popular review site "The Wertzone", went straight to the source and asked Brandon Sanderson on Twitter for us:

I thought that was still up in the air and an earlier release was possible (especially if @BrandSanderson delivers by Jan 2012).

And received the following response:

@Werthead The date hasn't been picked yet, so theoretically anything next year is possible.

@Werthead However, realistically, I doubt Tor will pass up the holiday season for the last WoT book. Or at least the summer season.

@Werthead While they COULD pick spring, it wouldn't make much sense marketing wise, and I think Harriet wants a good six months to edit.

@Werthead That means July is the earliest, November the latest, we will see the book. I'd put my money on somewhere in-between.

Justin Golenbock, Senior Publicist for Tor Books and the guy who handles publicity for The Wheel of Time and Sanderson's other books, also chimed in:

@Werthead Adam, we have Nov 12 as well, but that's tentative based on final editing. Harriet's in the drivers seat on the pub date:)

So there you have it, folks. Team Jordan is still on track to get the final Wheel of Time volume out to us next year. It looks like a spring release is no longer an option and the earliest we could reasonably expect to see the book will be next summer. As soon as we have a firm release date from the publishers, we'll update the site and our A Memory of Light information page to reflect that.

On a related note, JordanCon, a non-profit fantasy literature convention founded in honor of Robert Jordan, is currently running a drawing with the prize being a chance to get your name in A Memory of Light. The money is going to help defray JordanCon's operating costs, with a percentage being set aside for the Mayo Clinic's Amyloidosis research fund. The drawing runs until December, but Sanderson is already choosing names. If you'd like to enter, please visit www.jordancon.org.

Orbit Books, the publisher for the The Wheel of Time books in the United Kingdom and other territories, has launched an exciting marketing campaign to encourage people to re-engage in the series before A Memory of Light is released next year.

The campaign, called "Turn the Wheel of Time", features a fun video, as well as a free give-away tote-bag to the first 500 people who "Like" their Facebook page. (Only open to residents who live in countries where Orbit publishes their books. Sorry, Americans!) Here's the video:

No release date for A Memory of Light has been announced or confirmed. The video above says it will be out in November, 2012, but that is just speculation on Orbit's part. At this time, expect the book to be released anywhere from mid to late 2012.

Dragonmount is proud to announce a partnership agreement with Tor books to produce multiple videos to promote A Memory of Light. Building on the success of the Towers of Midnight book trailer, Tor has commissioned us to produce multiple live-action videos for the final Wheel of Time novel.

In addition to these video "trailers", a collection of behind-the-scenes features will be produced, along with other associated media, prize give-aways and fun stuff. The campaign is expected to begin sometime near the end of 2011.

In case you missed it, DM produced a "book trailer" last year for the release of Towers of Midnight. It received strong positive reviews and quickly became Tor's most viewed video ever. You can read all about the making of the video (with video and photos) on our Behind the Scenes page.

A Memory of Light is the fourteenth and final novel in the WoT saga. No official release date has been announced, although it is expected sometime in 2012.

Production for these video will happen over the summer in California. If you're interested in helping with production, please send an email showing your interest with appropriate filmmaking or related skillsets to movies@dragonmount.com.
