WoT video news: A Memory of Light update

Jason Denzel

One of the most common questions we get asked is, "When does the final book come out?" Well, folks, we don't have exact answers yet, but we can tell you a few useful things about A Memory of Light.

Our very own Kristen Nedopak gives us the full scoop in the latest Wheel of Time Video News. For even more information about this book, check out our A Memory of Light info page.

Special thanks to James Luckman ("Luckers") for contributing his theories on what we might see in the final book.

Hi all, I think that Brandon Sanderson himself should speak on this subject:

ITEM THE SECOND: A MEMORY OF LIGHT

During the early part of the year, I began another read-through of

the Wheel of Time. This was to prepare for writing the final book.

I got stopped in March, however, in order to do copyedits and

proofreads. I got back into it in April, but found myself anxious

to actually start work on the book.

This isn't unexpected. I enjoy writing quite a bit, and it relaxes

me. If I go a long time without working on a book, I start to feel

anxious. I want there to be progress. And so, I started working on

the prologue of the novel as I read. As I did, I found that I

actually liked this better. Rather than separately reading the

series, then writing on it, I was doing both hand-in-hand.

I'm still in the middle of The Fires of Heaven in my reread, moving

through it slowly. (Though I do intend to finish the series by the

time I'm done with AMoL.) I'm also about 10% of the way through

writing the book. My goal is to do around 10k words worth of

writing each week, which should put me on track to finish the book

somewhere around my end-of-the-year deadline.

As I've mentioned before, the need to do so much rereading this

time around is pushing the book back from its initial November

release date to sometime in 2012. I don't know WHEN exactly in

2012. It will depend on publishing schedules, and upon how long it

takes to write the novel. But I will finish it this year, and you

can follow along on my website as I post updated percentages.

I just want Kate Mulgrew(played capt. Janeway in Star Trek Voyager) to play the part of Moiraine in all the WoT movies that ever get made(down here in new Zealand). That small yet commanding stature. Those cristalline chimes along with those ageless features. I always hear her voice when I read Moiraine. Oh and don't laugh but misery loves company so I think Judge Judy can learn to act so she can join up as Elaida.com. Oh to see her get her just deserts by getting raked by the Seanchan... bye bye bee-arch, have a safe flight on A'dam Air. lool

So uh they said the last book will be roughly as long as towers of midnight.....are you kidding me? Is it just me or are we cutting off a lot of the story to make a quick finish? preferably for me I want a 3000 smallest print ever novel for our concluding series book...considering there are so many plots going on and strings...how could we end it with a book that size? This is my favorite series, and to see its end so quick without a proper finish saddens me. Anyone else feeling this?

Bit disappointed here, was hoping for some little hints but didnt really supply anything I dont know already.

Flowsharian - The original Jordan plan was to end in 1 book after Knife of dreams, so by us getting GS / TOM / AMOL, weve luckily had a bit of an extension. Im happy with the way the story is finishing, even though I will also be a bit sad at the end, but hey, the wheel turns as the wheel wills.

As usual, some people tend to act entitled on the internet.

True, this is not technically an update, but maybe we should act like rational human beings, realize this is a fansite made for fans by fans, and offer constructive criticism. There's nothing wrong at all with a purely speculation piece; I would only recommend naming it as such. Using the term 'update' in the title is a very touchy subject when it comes to ravenous fans looking for every little morsel of information they can devour, whether that's for books, movies or video games.

I just started my next read-through, and came across something interesting in The Great Hunt. When Mat calls the Heros of the Horn to fight the Seanchan, Artur Hawkwing states, "We have come to the horn, but we must follow the [Dragon] banner. And the Dragon."

It would be awesome if Mat was no longer linked to the Horn, and a Darkfriend blows it, only to have the Heros turn on them! It would be like that scene in Braveheart when the two armies are rushing at each other, only to stop and greet each other, then turn on the enemy. I think that would be a dramatic role for the Horn to play, and sweet justice in the Last Battle.

Also just started The Eye of the World to begin another re-read in preparation for the last book coming out. The update was great, obviously a gorgeous young lady talking about WoT can't be that bad whether there's new information or not. But we did receive a pretty detailed update anyway in reading the comments so it all turned out for the best. No problem here, keep doing what you guys and gals are doing.

first of all, the "Verify you are a human" ( love it)

then sekond, this the last book, everything gone come together, and give the hole pictures,

and I wonder why di ppl want this answers in front?

halft the magic with a new book is that you have no idea whats gone happend, you have some ideas (mine ideas never works out, the riter ideas is so much better, never fails),

but my points is, I DON'T want to know what might happend in the last bok, I think you take a loot of the funn and excitation out of the wating.

P.S. am only in here so you ppl can tel me when its coming, not gone do ennything for 2-3 days afther that

All updates do not need to be for us WoT-heads. I mean... some of us will read 400+ pages of "whodunit" theories about Asmo, but we get mad that we hear nothing new from a MoL update?

REALLY???

Let's see: The Gathering Storm came out by the end of october/beginning of november in 2009. Then, The Towers Of Midnight came out by the end of october/ beginning of november in 2010 and on a tuesday the both of them! So, A Memory Of Light will be out on the shelves Tuesday, november 1st 2011. So You have got your answer there people! As for all other questions concerning the soryline or the plot, the best answer is: Since you are not the writer or the editor, you can only wait till then and read the book!

Note: the dates I metioned in this post are for Canada, so I would'nt know for the U.S. But I guess it works fairly the same!

So all of your questions have been answered! Any other answer would called speculation!

There is a point where I am going to have to disagree with Lucker's theories.

#1 - The Seanchan Prophecy vs the Kareathon Cycle

Luckers said that all the evidence points to Fortuona swearing alliegence to Rand, rather than Rand bending knee to her. My memory points the other direction. Firstly, the Kareathon prophecies state only that Rand will "bind the nine moons to him". One can easily argue that the marriage of Matt to Tuon and her later ascension to the throne acomplished that. The other primary piece of evidence is in the 2nd trip to Rhuidean by Aviendha. The final vision she saw included the following '"What care do they have for the Dragon?" Hehyal asked. "They are invaders who forced him to now to their Empress. She is considered above him. They will not keep promises made to an inferior."' (Towers of Midnight, pp 729). This clearly supports the Seanchan version of the prophecy.

I was introduced to this saga by my son-in-law, whom I love by the way, in 2000. He has followed the saga from day 1 and between us we have a lot of years invested in this series. I for one would rather wait for the right ending however long it takes. Brandon is doing a terrific job picking up where Robert Jordan, the light rest his soul, left off. I do not want a hurried end as Terry Goodkind did in his Sword of Truth series. Harriet keep it up to your husband's standard, I am a patient person.
