A Memory of Light Cover Art

Jason Denzel

Tor Books has revealed the official cover art for A Memory of Light, the fourteenth and final Wheel of Time novel.

Click the image shown here for a larger version, or click here for the full resolution version where you can see Rand in all his 300 dpi glory.

The artwork is by renowned artist Michael Whelan. Mr. Whelan was commissioned to do this cover after Darrell K. Sweet passed away. He will be the Guest of Honor at next year's JordanCon V convention.

So, what do you think of the cover? Rand looks pretty awesome, huh? Tell us what you think in the comments below!

A Memory of Light will be released in hardcover and audiobook on January 8, 2013. The eBook will be released a few weeks after that.

somebody said the third weapon was the dragon scepter with added jewels. that seems to make the most sense, though i've never seen him wear it on a belt.

that cannot be... it was destroyed when rand lost his hand...

What a bittersweet moment! I have this feeling when I get the book I'm going to spend a good few hours just staring at it because once you start, there's no stopping. And once you stop...

In other news, I always pictured Nyn to have light brown hair. And in WomanSpeak, the short-haired lady has distinctly light brown hair. Team 'Neave all the way

Well, I've only read TGS once, and I"m not that far along in my reread...maybe he wasn't either?! haha

-Or was the end of KOD? See, I'm way out of touch here.

If that's supposed to Nynaeve in yellow (who else would be at the final battle with Rand at the pit of doom to help him wield Callandor in a Circle) I think the artist forgot about her "impressive bosum"

nynaeve, egwene, alivia, meirin... could probably add more to the list of potential people who could fill that role... take your pick...

Please return to the two things tor.com said about the women:

1. They are Aes Sedai.

2. They were with Rand from the beginning.

Alivia is not Aes Sedai and bot her and Mierin were not with Rand from the beginning. It narrows the list to Egwene, Nynaeve Moiraine and Elayne. I don't think many people here think one of the women is Egwene or Elayne.

@fikkie77 its debateable whether meirin was with rand from the beginning... someone sent the trollocs into the two rivers to find rand... she always played with rands strings from the shadows...

tho its true that lanfear is only first mentioned in tgh... i find it very hard to believe that her first contact with rand, was in the mirror world... like "gee... i wonder if this is lews... lets transport him to another reality and then poke a grolm with a stick in order to find out"

Lanfear was not free in EOTW. Ishamael sent those Trollocs after Padan Fain told him the Dragon Reborn must be one of the three boys.

i musta missed that part about ishamael sending the trollics that day :)

and, im not so sure about that :) the message written at the beginning of TGH in fal darras dungeon, "the daughter of the night walks"(if memory serves).... i dont see how anyone could have known if she was just released.. she mustve been released sometime in eotw, and maybe just getting her geography down... the "aes sedai that were with rand since the beginning" could refer to leaving the two rivers, or, to when rand first found out he was the dragon... tho... in its essense, id have to agree, that meirin probably wouldnt count as "with rand since the beginning" as she wanted rand to be with her, not her with rand(prides a fickle friend i tell ya), so she'd probably not fit with the picture :(

Even prior to TWOT I wasn't a fan of Sweet's (R.I.P.) drawings of humans or creatures. He's done some Lord of the Rings artwork before (a calander comes to mind) and other work. So for me it's also impossible to not see an improvement in the characters. This is far better in that respect. Having said that, I think Sweet's choice of scene was more interesting though. Unfortunately I long ago stopped caring about the covers due to the difference of what I envisioned and Sweet's interpretations.

@GiovanniCaffarella

That was really cool. After a bit i could see the fight and the flames. The Background did not jump at me at first though i like it. However once the music got going it all came alive!! Maybe i just need some music to go along with the cover :)

Whelan can draw people much better than Sweet. The full cover especially looks great. Any ideas about where Rand is?

He's at the Dark One's underground house ;) Looks ok in small form and much better in a larger format!

My first and still current impression is that it pales in comparision to the DKS rough draft.....now I really HAD hoped that they could have had someone close to the man just finish the funeral pyre scene.....:-(

The full jacket cover is a little bit more pleasing, but still.......it's not contest.

*sigh*

So true

In my opinion, the power level of either woman in the cover is irrelevant. Callandor is flawed, without a buffer, so I'm thinking its potentially an unlimited source of power, if you can somehow save yourself from being burned to a crisp while using it to that extent. I think the women in the circle will somehow enable Rand to channel even more than the Cheodan Kal did. Even though I don't see how that's gonna help. From Lews Therin POV, pure raw strength is where him and his hundred compainons went wrong the first time. According to LTT, raw power didn't work. So, unless the woman bring some unknown information, (something Moiraine learned from the Alf & Elf or something from Meirin), I don't see how the power of Callandor is gonna help. It's gonna have to be something to do with Saidar, because Saidin was used in the first attempt, and it failed. So both powers are gonna have to be used, but how, Callandor is only for Saidin, or is it?

@damer flinn, during the cleansing, calendor was used in a circle, and it didnt seem to do anything other, than act as an angreal... it was the candle beside the beacon that was the chodenkal... it may have a potential beyond the chodenkal, but only if used outside of the circle(buffer) and then, it would definately kill the wielder...

You didn't really say anything but what I already said. Exempting the point about Callandor being used at the Cleansing of Saidin, and the fact that it didn't (SEEM) to do anything special. All of Callandor's secrets and powers are yet to be revealed. Who's hand shall wield that FEARFUL blade? If you notice in the first half of the WOT series, when Rand was still considered a noobie, there was many times when he was channeling with Callandor and he would say "Come at me Shai'tan, if you dare". He says this several times if my memory is right. With this, surely I could anything. He says this also many times with Callandor. He doesn't say that with the Cheodan Kal. So if it doesn't have the potential for unlimited power in a circle, and only without, how is he gonna defeat the Dark One? Because clearly he is in a circle with Callandor!

Even though I don't think that the vast amount of power we are talking about is going to be relevant, due to LTT point of view about how raw power wasn't enough to win. I think its gonna be more about WHAT they do with the male and female halves together, that will matter more than the amount. But still, they will need a great amount to accomplish anything having to due with killing or sealing away the D.O.

I love it. It's art at it's finest. This is what we all have been waiting for. The only bad thing about it, is that I want the book even more now. I'll buy two. Or three. One to read. One to get signed. And one for my Kindle. :)

The women are confirmed to be Moiraine and Nynaeve. Whelan knew about the fact that Nynaeve is used to wear blue and green, so her choice for yellow is probably something in the book.

Where has this been confirmed? What are your facts?

What if it is ment to combine all 3 powers? I am fairly certin that durring onee of LTT's rambalings he said the male half was tainted b/c it touched the DO. And that it couldn't be any other way b/c something had to touch him in order to seal his prison. So what if Rand joins the circle with Callandor and it alowes him to ue both the male half and the TP at the same time? The TP touches the DO and the OP seals it all up. Just a thought.

I think this time will be different: Rand is not going te re-seal the Bore, but is going to heal the Bore, so that the Pattern is once again what will be imprisoning the Dark One and not saidin and/or saidar.
