Why does grass stay green under snow?

^ This. Chlorophyll is a pigment, like melanin in your skin. You may get lighter without sunlight, but the skin colour doesn't completely vanish.

Tree leaves changing colors is due to something different...

A not too deep layer of snow lets light and air through and at the same time reduces the metabolism so the chlorophyll can keep doing its thing. A heavy covering of snow or a long ice over will yellow the grass.

 

And perhaps squirrel. Not sure.

Oh and I used to enjoy this when I had a garden - you can plant things like lettuce and some other fairly hardy stuff in late late fall or early winter and if they get growing before heavy snow you can kinda Harvest them all winter. And if they don't get going they're the first thing up in spring cause the freeze actually helps lettuce seeds germinate.

if the snow on s too deep for light to penetrate or winter lasts very long or there's freeze and thaw and freeze it won't stay green

Freeze then thaw then freeze is the perfect description of Colorado weather, so that explains why it always turns brown.

I stopped enjoying snow before I had my learner's permit.  The first couple light snowfalls are always fun, but beyond that it's just annoying.

Although waking up way too early to shovel out a car does add a whole new level on top.

the duel with death on snowy roads with drivers who forget every year how to drive on snow or who assume everyone's car is as much a snow plow as theirs is always fun.

Probably more like Huns or Goths.  Although some people lived in snowy areas even before then.
