Lyv still could not believe her cousin had taken this big step and traveled to Tar Valon and then had signed up for training in the Warders Yards. Ginae had questioned her on her skills and why she wanted to join the Tower Guard, Lyv was impressed with Sasha’s determination. She was honest about not having any training but the will to get through it and Lyv had a short talk with Ginae about becoming Sasha’s mentor. The Mistress of Trainees agreed, upon the condition that she would monitor the training as she did not want Lyv to do her family any favors. Lyv smirked saying that it was more to do Sasha a favor in showing her that this was not the life for her than to help her out. But Ginae had said nothing to that and had simply finished the introduction for Sasha.

Now they were outside and on their way to the Armory where Lyv would teach her new trainee on the weapons that she could train with. She looked over Sasha’s face and noticed how the young girl’s eyes shown with pride as they walked and then could not help but believe that this might actually work. She would do her best anyway and Sasha would follow that example, she may even lead and drag Lyv by her hair if she did not shape up and start acting like an enthusiastic mentor. “Come on, before we had to the dirt let’s get you some new clothes,” and took a side turn to the storage area where Lyv got her cousin two shirts, two breeches and a pair of leather boots.

She then showed the girl to her new room and waited for Sasha to put her things away and change, before she would take her to her first lesson in the Armory. Lyv bit her lip as she waited for Sasha to pop out of her room, she wondered if anyone would see the family resemblance and wondered what it would be like to show the guards that her family was full of warriors. A glistening of pride went over her bright green eyes as Sasha appeared in the doorway. Lyv clasped her hands together and said, “You’re ready.”

Sasha was glad that things were going so well. Lyv would be her mentor, she only hoped it was for the better and not worse than she could imagine. Faimly wasn't always easier on you because they were family, it was usually the other way around. Sasha wasn't sure which way this would lean, but she didn't care, Lyv hadn't balked long at her determination to train.

It would take a while getting use to her surroundings and the new clothes. The shirt and breeches fit awkwardly but the boots were really comfortable. Sasha was happy to see Lyv's reaction and was eager to get started.

Lyv gave her a mild tour on the way to the armory. There wasn't really alot to see other than buildings and training but it was good to get her bearings sooner rather than later.

The doors to the armory were tall and wide and Sasha was surprised to find rows upon rows of weapons in the armory. For some reasons he'd assumed there would be store houses, but to actually see the blades glinting in the sunlight was breathtaking, almost as much as the sight of the walls of Tar Valon had been.

Sasha waited for her mentor to begin with their reason for being here as she stared around in awe.

Sasha seemed to be impressed by the weapons and Lyv remembered her first glance at the Armory, together with her old mentor. It was quite a sight to see when you started as a trainee and Lyv was glad that Sasha seemed comfortable here. She started to talk about the difference between broader, longer weapons and smaller hand weapons like daggers. And also showed the bows and arrows, the shields and introduced Sasha to Lauri who forged the steel that made these weapons. Then she went outside and took one of her own daggers and a ragged piece of cloth. “First, you need to learn how to treat your weapon so you can trust it when you have to depend on it in a fight,” and started to clean her dagger. Then Lyv handed a smaller dagger she normally kept in her boot and handed it to Sasha, “Here, you show me how you would clean the weapon and how you can weigh it in your hands,” and watched as Sasha learned quick.

Lyv showed her the weapons but before she was allowed to touch one, Lyv removed them to the out of doors again and she was set a task to clean a dagger. Sasha guessed it was good to know how to care for your weapons, much like you had to care for a plant or it would die.

Sasha took the dagger cautiously, it wasn't like holding a knife at the dinner table, both were dangerous but this was doubly so. She took the clothe Lyv had given her and tried to clean it the best she could, but all she really managed to do was cut her hand and get blood over everything.

Sasha frowned and looked up to her mentor and cousin. "I'll get it." Sasha wound the original clothe around her hand to stop the bleeding and took another and tried again, being more careful of the edges but getting the fresh blood off and the grim that she supposed was there. The dagger didn't look like it had needed cleaning before, and Sasha wondered if all trainees cleaned just for the sake of cleaning.

By the end of this try Sasha was no worse for the wear. No new cuts or nicks and a clean and polished blade was handed back to Lyv. She hoped to understand what it was that kept her safe, she was starting to doubt her decision, weapons were dangerous things.

When Sasha cut herself, Lyv winced for a brief moment and had to keep a cool gaze not to give away to her cousin how she felt. The girl did well, cleaned up her wound and bound a piece of cloth around it. Lyv would show her how to tend wounds later and also show her to the Infirmary if ever she had a worse wound that this shallow cut.

Lyv took the dagger from her trainee and then took her by her good hand to rise and go back in the Armory. “What I would like you to do is go in there, have a good look around and then chose two weapons that you would like me to train you in, you can borrow two or you can find out their names and tell me,” she said and then ushered her trainee into the Armory. It was important for Sasha to learn the difference between weapons, to learn which worked well together and which merely did the same.

The long-range weapons were different from the direct combat weapons, but teaching that would bore Sasha as it would any trainee, by letting her figure it out, Lyv hoped she would learn and be curious about her training, rather than follow the rules set out before her.

Time to choose? Sasha had no idea where to start or even what type of weapons she wanted to learn. She was pretty sure she didn't want anything sharp, they looked to be like alot of work, and dangerous to a beginner as well.

Sasha walked the isles of the armory searching for something that would catch her eye. The first trip through she saw nothing spectacular jump out at her, but her thoughts recoiled over what she knew she wanted and what she thought she was suppose to want.

Sasha wandered over to the quarterstaff weapons and looked at each peice. A peice of wood was far safer, but a blade was traditional, so Sasha choose one of each.

Sasha took the two weapons to Lyv carefully. "I would like to learn the quarterstaff and the short sword, with a preference on the quarterstaff if I may." She wasn't sure if that would be allowed but she hoped so.

As her trainee watched over the weapons, Lyv could let the thoughts of her family wander free for a few moments. She held them dear to her, especially now that her cousin was here to learn from her. She liked that Sasha really took to the weapons and was not afraid to pick one from the rack and feel the weight in her hands. Lyv waited and wondered about her own parents, how would they feel if they saw Lyv and Sasha working with weapons? They’d probably die of shame before they had a chance to inquire after anything.

Sasha took up a quarterstaff and chose a short sword as well, Lyv wondered which would be her primary when Sasha asked her if it was ok to use the quarterstaff. It was a weapon that Lyv had learned to use much later in her training, as she started off with the katana first. She enjoyed working with the quarterstaff and knew she would enjoy teaching it now too. “That’s fine, we will work with both, but you can rest assure that for the next year or so your main weapons will be training lathes. First you learn to move, then you learn to move while wielding a weapon. But it is a very fine choice, the quarterstaff and you can always change weapons or study more weapons later.” She took the girl along to a training field nearby and showed her how to mend the weapon, how to clean it and let Sasha clean Lyv’s quarterstaff as the one from the Armory really did not need any work. It was a nice training, they took it calmly and Lyv felt that Sasha was picking up fast.

“Ok, off you go. Go find your room, get cleaned up and tomorrow morning we’ll start your first lessons in the Yards. You can meet me at an hour after dawn near the barracks and we’ll do some physical training and some basic movement.” With that, Lyv left her student to find her way around the Yards and also find some friends. Life in the yards could be hard on a trainee especially and she would need friends to rely on. Her mentor had another student to see about a rope and went off to fetch the PoW apprentice for his training.

Sasha was a bit leary about caring for Lyv's staff, she only hoped she'd done a good enough job and didn't do more damage than good. But it was good to be with Lyv, to have her as a mentor was going to be interesting.

Sasha found her way to her room as instructed and sat down on her bed. She prayed to the Creator that her family was okay and that Lyv's family would accept them for letting her leave and follow in her cousin's footsteps even if they denied their daughter now, she was the only one they had left.

Sasha snuggled up into her bed after taking a thoughtful bath. Her thoughts ran over the choices she had made today and she hoped they were right. The next few years were going to be trying and Sasha tried to mentally prepare for the rest of her life as she lay down to sleep.
