Character Name: Ackley Carnel

Division: Army of the Light

Character’s Age: 27

Place of Birth or Raising: Amadicia

Physical Description:

Of average height and build, Ackley is not an intimidating man by any stretch of the

definition. Rumpled golden hair mixed with a tang of brown, he kept his mother’s bright

blue eyes whilst inherited his father’s pointy chin and mischievous grin. He walks with

sure footed confidence and will not hesitate in sharing a laugh with anyone –even if it is a

none too pleased Hundredman after discovering Ackley’s secret wine stash. He carries no

distinguishing battle scars – yet.

Other Description:

A happy jovial fellow when he was serving in the ranks, he enjoys the simple pleasures

of his life. His time when not on duty, are usually spent drinking or dicing. Little known

fact, Ackley can actually read from before his days as a Child of the light, though he never

mentions it to the others from fear of being alienated by the rest.

History:

Ackley Carnel, born the third son to a well off family that runs a successful vineyard just

outside of Amador, had a fairly normal childhood growing up. With an older sister and two

younger brothers (both twins), Ackley was happy growing up and helping his father work on

the grapes, which they make into wine for selling.

His parent however had other plans for Ackley, at the age of twelve Ackley was sent to

become an apprentice scribe at the Amadician courts. There he went to be a student scholar

and apprentice to one of the head accountants and clerks which make up the backbone of

the nation’s judicial system. He learnt to read and write, though he was never any good at

it. From the age of thirteen to sixteen, he constantly ran off and flogged classes to explore

the gardens or city streets. He became fond of taverns, markets and other dodgy places that

accompany a city.

When his teachers became dissatisfied with his progress in his studies, they pushed the

young man harder and even resorted to switching (something rarely done) in the hopes

of making him concentrate on his studies. What this resulted instead was force the newly

seventeen Ackley to run away from the courts and palace, with all his belongings. Ashamed

to face his family, he decided he would join the Children of the Light instead.

His time at the Amadician courts let him see his fair share of the Children, and he believed

they would be a much better path for his future careers than the books and scrolls he was

brought up with. Lying to the recruiter of his age, he initiated his training as a raw recruit

along with countless others.

Since Joining:

After his official initiation into the order, he was placed in a freshly formed company of

swords that was placed as part of the garrison at the Fortress of Light. He learnt how to

fight in formation and with both sword and sometimes – spear. He was never built to be

a big man, but when the time came for selection of squadmen from the ranks, he was the

popular choice amongst the men who saw him as easy going and fairly lax with regulations.

However, Ackley’s easy going nature and imaginative interpretations of protocol did not

place him well in their books of some officers and he was avoided promotion twice.

Finally though, at the age of twenty-two, after a particularly high demand season for NCO

replacements, Ackley was named Squadman in charge of his own handful. A bit after his

promotion to squadman, the company was attached to the XI Legion which was at the time

on campaign to crush a rather tiresome rebel uprising. Again, Ackley proved himself to not

only be a reliable Child during the heat of battle, but also demonstrated above average

leadership potential. He was promoted to second bannerman after a particularly bloody

ambush on their supply convoy. He was later raised to a full bannerman at the completion

of his tour of duty with the Legion XI.

A few years preceding, he was attached to a hasty call of arms near the borders of

Ghealdan. Ackley was then made acting Hundreman for a company oflevy crossbowmen

which had been conscripted to fight alongside the children from the local Amadician

villages. Despite the almost nonexistent training amongst his men, Ackley was able to

employ his crossbows to reasonable effect against better armed Ghealdan infantry.

The border clash didn’t last long however, but it was decided for the Ackley to be promoted

to the full title of Hundredman, with instructions to take back and train the remaining men

who decided to stay after the levies were disbanded.
