[RR Task] The Blue Bayou-Anaheim, California

This restaurant is located inside Disneyland Park so admission to the park is required to get in, however it is the best place to eat anywhere in the park. The restaurant is centered in New Orleans square, just around the corner from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and the theme of the restaurant is French Quarter New Orleans. When you walk into the restaurant you look behind you and the decor looks like the outside of a old Victorian manor house. The house's veranda is where you are eating lunch or dinner.

Looking outward you see the lagoon with boats of people passing, the veranda is overlooking the lagoon in the first part of the Pirates ride. Sometimes you can hear people singing Yo-Ho along with the Pirates a bit further into the ride yet the sound floats back. The wait staff are friendly and if you have special allergy needs you are more then welcome to ask to speak to the chef who will come to your table to speak to you. My mum is allergic to Wheat, Milk, and Soy, and my brother is allergic to soy. So the chef came and told them what they could eat and then sent out a basket of fresh, hot, gluten free rolls for mum. She was worried they wouldn't taste good because she's not had a good experience with gluten free rolls, but she said they were amazing she eat them all before the rest of us could even ask her about them. If you get a birthday button at the City Hall on Main Street the staff gives you a free desert with a birthday candle. The menu is Cajun-Creole Cuisine so they give you the choice of salad or Gumbo as an entree and then you can order the Royal Street Seafood Jambalaya, or the Monte Cristo sandwich, I always order this, the food is in large portions so I'm never able to finish my sandwich. I'd recommend that you order something and share between two people, then it feels more like you've not wasted some money if you can't finish your food. The prices are a bit spendy because the restaurant is rated at four stars, the only one in the park. So the lowest priced item on the menu, besides the kids meals, is the Le Special de Monte Cristo Sandwich at $25.49 which is, conveniently, only served at lunch time. The most expensive thing is the Surf and Turf which is served at dinner, and it is $45.99, the rest of the menu falls somewhere between those two prices.

I do rate the restaurant at five stars for both food and ambiance, myself because you cannot have bad food here, nor is the ambiance anything but amazing. You feel well taken care of no matter how busy the place is. Everyone should go at least once if they make it out to Disneyland Park. If you want to have more of a look at the place the restaurants site is here. https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disneyland/blue-bayou-restaurant/

(book your meal the morning of or a few days early?)

Yes most esp. in the summertime. The restaurant is almost always packed. Although in the "Off-season" you can get into eat without too much of a wait. I usually go for my birthday which is in Feb so it's not too bad. I think I waited the most of like 20 min or so. In the off season. Summer get reservations. *laughs*

Just seeing that picture makes me want to go there.  I haven't been to DisneyLand, but I've been to Disney World and loved the Pirates ride. But if I could be on the ride and smelling food like that I'd love that even more.  Can't go wrong with surf and turf normally and that really isn't a bad price for that. Typically you see anywhere from $35-$60 for that so it is kind of right in the middle.  There are the occasional places where it is more than what I mentioned.

Anyways, that is pretty amazing that the chef will come out to your table and speaks directly with you. Most places don't do that, but that means that they truly care about their customers.   Honestly though for a four star restaurant I could see them wanting to do that and doing that more normally.   For the prices that you pay are the portions small?  Some of the higher end places charge a lot for less food, which drives me crazy!

:) Hope that helps. I might add the Gumbo is A-mazing! They also give you sourdough rolls on the table before the main food arrives. Yum!

How the heck I missed that part since I read about the Monte Cristo, is beyond me...*slaps own forehead in shame*  Must have been tired when I posted last time, either that or I focused on the Monte Cristo itself. Lol

Gumbo, now yer talking!  And rolls...all types of rolls are awesome, and sourdough is pretty good too.  Although I tend to eat more rolls or bread before the main course gets there, if the rolls or bread are good.  Then I'm not as hungry for my real food. But with what it sounds like, I could feed myself for more than one meal, which is a good thing.  Oh, do they have any special types of butter, like a cinnamon butter or thyme and butter or anything like that to go with the sourdough?

Here's the Monte Cristo with the potatoes and greens. *laughs* I think about it when i'm not in Disneyland. You can't really tell from the picture but the four parts of the sandwich are actually pretty big sized, as is the amount of potatoes.

I'm not a seafood person, so I don't like Seafood Gumbo or Jambalaya, thankfully the Gumbo is made with Sausage instead. Although normally I don't eat pork either. *laughs* I'm just a walking contradiction in terms. *laughs*

Yes they give you a mix of butter, my mum only got normal butter because they wanted to be sure she wouldn't get sick. The thyme butter is REALLY good esp. on hot sourdough rolls. Yum! So you should go to Disneyland. *laughs*

I love this place! We went to Disneyland for our honeymoon, and this was one of the places that we HAD to go to, because I had always wanted to eat there, thanks to numerous rides on Pirates of the Caribbean. Good thing we had a few days though... in mid-September, we had to make the reservation a day or two out. The Monte Cristo is also very, very excellent. I'm very frugal, so eating there made me cringe when I looked at the prices, but it was still well worth it. In the future, we will go back-- but only without the kids!

Great review Rashi!!  The pic of the Monte Cristo made me drool a bit...and I just ate my weight in Chinese food.  *grins*  I've never been to Disneyland...DJ and I went to Disney World for our honeymoon and they don't have anything like this there.  Which is very sad because I really want to go now and I doubt I'll ever get to the west coast.

Although I don't know if I could ever dish out that much money for a sandwhich.  LOL

Yep, I think we do need to go there though! If we can get there...CA is one of the states I have yet to visit and most are in the southwest portion of the country, but this definitely makes me want to remedy that.

That Monte Cristo looks amazing!!!! That is the best type of Monte Cristo out there!  Oh and the powdered sugar just adds to it all.  And by the look of the plate you get some kind of jelly or preserves to go with it too.  Good stuff.

When your son gets a bit older you should make a road trip to CA Brid darling, then you can experience it for yourself.

Yes DJ the jam is berry, I think it's boysenberry if I remember correctly. *checks menu* Doesn't say...huh anywho I'm pretty sure it is boysenberry. *laughs* Which you wouldn't think would go well with the sandwich but it really does. Yum!

I remember the smells from when rode the pirates ride as a child and always begged my parents to go but it was always either "The food is too expensive" or "They are booked". A few friends and I were even planning a Disney trip later this year and we talked about trying it out but one of them can't handle anything spicy and so it looks like no blue bayou for us. Sad too since I had looked at their menu and planned my order as soon as they started talking about maybe going there. I would have probably ordered the Cajun-inspired salad, the pan-seared Tesoro Island chicken with Boursin cheese mashed potatoes and a crème brulée for desert. Now I'm hungry just thinking of it!

I'll be checking this place out this week and, thanks to the review, might even pick up a birthday pin and see if I can score a free desert since my birthday is also coming up later this month.  I'm eyeing the Monte Cristo sandwich with either a side salad or the gumbo.

Do it. Totally worth it.

Mr.Gambler, there is non-spicy food there. My wife, for example, got the Monte Cristo sandwich. Zero spice to it, and extremely delicious!

What Horn said. The Gumbo isn't even that spicy and if I remember right they list on the menu what has kick to it and what doesn't.

Forgot to reply back in November but went and the food was great!!!

Went during the lunch hour and enjoyed a delicious and filling Monte Cristo sandwich, with Gumbo side, and a Mint Julep to drink.

After lunch the server brought me a Mickey shaped desert since I was wearing a Disney Birthday Celebration pin.

I ate at the rainforest cafe in downtown disney once and would definitely go there again... And want to check out the medieval times place down there at some point.

Medieval times is the best! I've been to two of the "castles" The one in CA and the on in GA both were super fun. :)

I don't really eat outside the park when I go. *laughs* The gumbo place inside the park is good I forget the name of it.
