Aiel Societies--what is each's function?

So a friend and I were discussing the Aiel the other day, and we remembered the functions of some societies, but not all of them. All we know the common knowledge that is oficially given in the Compendium. Here is what we know:

  • The Far Dareis`Mai are well known for their expert scouting abilities...and, of course, they are the only warrior society with women (and only women are in the society).
The Shae`en M`taal (Stone Dogs) function as a sort of rear guard during battle or when a group is retreating.
The Aethan Dor (Red Shields) are the so-called "police force" for the Aiel clans.
Duadhe Mahdi`in (water seekers) specialize in finding water, as their name suggests.

OK, that's all I know. Thanks for the help, when it comes :D

On a side note, do the Maidens of the Spear on this forum have their own secret language?

It's a good question. I'm pretty sure we haven't read (in the books at least) the primary functions of all the societies.

The Encyclopaedia lists all the societies, but can't say any more about their "function", because we don't know--unless this is extraneous info RJ just added as a reference somewhere outside the books.

I have always wondered, too. Seems unlikely we'll find out. All the characters have gone through their Aiel 101 scenes, so...

Thanks for the encyclopedia link! I got it, and downloaded it and stuff...yay! :D

water seekers and another society (can't remember name) are scouts' date=' not just looking for water.[/quote']

As far as I can tell, the Water Seekers are less scouts than they are trackers...Which makes sense. As for scouts, I think the best ones are the Far`Dareis Mai: After all, they are constantly boasting about it in the books, and the others can never deny it effectively. That, compounded by the fact that Bain and Chiad are, indeed, excellent scouts. :D Gaul is good at scouting, but not as good as the Maidens... :P

Gaul is a Stone Dog. Stone Dogs are rear guard soldiers and have a reputation for being fatalistic, fighting to the last man if asked by the battle leader, if only just to buy time for a regrouping.

The Maidens are battle scouts. They specialize in carrying back information to the main battle group and infiltrating beyond enemy lines.

Water Seekers are survivalists. They study the terrain for food and water. This includes hunting for game. They have a knowledge of plants as well.

Black Eyes specialize in tracking and fighting in low light, twilight. They can often use senses other than sight to supplement their ability fight when the light is low. They can memorize terrain by how it feels underfoot, and by signs most wouldn't know to look for in the low light.

Thunder Walkers are proficient at striking at weak points in a battle line. They also offer strong reinforcements in defense.

Mountain Dancers is rather easy to figure out. Mountain specialists. They can cover ground in the mountains as fast as any warrior could on even ground.

Red Shields are like MPs. They keep order amongst warriors and non-warriors. They have to have more of a keen sense of judgement and knowledge of psychology in both combat and normal relations.

Brothers of the Eagle are the male counterparts to the Maidens. They specialize in more restrictive terrain though, like moutainous regions.

Night Spears often guard holds at night, specializing in such duties. They can be used as night watch in any situation including perimeter duties in battle.

Dawn Runners are often the first to initiate contact in battle. They specialize in shaping the front lines of a battle, changing the direction of attack or settling the battle lines to terrain a chief finds more advantageous.

There's not too much about True Bloods as their function for the Chiefs is pretty much a secret. It can be assumed that they are quite proficient fighters as all Aiel warriors are. (My personal guess is that they are like the secret police for important figures in a clan, like chiefs and thier families. In that case they are like security and bodyguards, most likely personal escorts in battle and in daily life. That's what I can assume though.)

Knife hands...(my favorites) They specialize in unarmed combat. A knife hand sometimes prefers to use hands and feet in battle rather than their weapons at hand. You can imagine how often they take Gai'Shain in battle. lol
