The Human Equation – Ayreon – Progressive Metal/Rock Opera

Ayreon is a Progressive Metal – Rock Opera Dutch project created by Arjen Lucassen. Though is catalogued as Progressive Metal, he combines it with other genres such as folk, classical and electronic. All of his albums contain storylines where the characters are being represented by different guests vocalists.

The Human Equation takes place almost entirely in the main’s character mind (Me – played by James LaBrie) who is in a coma. In the real world his wife (played by Marcela Bovio) and his best friend (played by Lucassen) are at his side in the Hospital. Other relevant characters are the emotions that “Me” feels in the dream world including Fear (played by Mikael Åkerfeldt), Reason (Eric Clayton), and Pride (Magnus Ekwall).

I think this is an album that should be listened without any influence, that’s why I’m not going to make a review of any of its songs. I’m only going to say that one of my favourite songs is “Day Seven: Hope”. In contrast to the title and the melody of the song (quite animated) it’s really heartbreaking.
