The aMoL 'Memories of Light' Releases

Recommended Posts

No idea on memory #8. The only glass pillars we've seen are those in Rhuidean but I don't see how that can be related particularly because Egwene had seen the Rhuidean pillars and doesn't think of them here.

Still sounds properly mysterious. I must say, the memories have been really great so far. A lot of food for thought without being outright spoilers. I wonder who chooses them.

BTW, I would suggest making a new thread for the second week memories. This one is unwieldy enough already.

Somebody on the Tor website spoiler thread suggested that the glass pillar of light  might represent the OP and the fact that it's frozen means the access to the OP is unavailable. This can only happen temporarily (would also agree with the pillar being frozen)  since we know for sure that the OP will be present past the LB. But perhaps something will happen that will make the True Source temporarily unreachable during the LB. There have been references to saidar failing wards not holding etc. This could explain why Ituralde would need to use the Ways in memory #7. It could also explain why Rand might need a Well replacing the used up Eye of the World. The latter reason is problematic however since it doesn't account for saidar which will also be needed in the Sealing.

It could link to the theory that Rand will die and go to TAR and Egwene/Perrin will have to "release" him (living up to both the "die and live again" and "twice dawns the day" prophesies). The pillar of light could be Rand, "frozen" in TAR after being "killed".

The other thing I instantly thought of was Callandor. I'm not sure how it connects, I'm just throwing this out there, but the language is reflective of the glass sword that becomes a pillar of light. I dunno, Callandor is intrinsically linked to Rand, so it could connect to my above theory...

I read the first sentences in herid's post up to 'temporarily unreachable', typed up a response, and then noticed that it was basically the same as the rest of his post.

It had been useful at Maradon. Nobody knew he had it. That was important.
Why is everybody so eager to put that into Rand's head? As far as I know it would fit more that adequately with the thoughts of some  DF Asha'man or other kind of dreadlord thinking about how they managed to blow up a sizeable chunk of Maradon's wall. It could even be a 13x13'ed Logain, or a forsaken.

By the way, I'm not sure I remember correctly but I don't think the Ashaman with Ituralde sensed a lot of channeling just seconds before the wall explosion. So it could also be a woman.

EDIT: what about a terangreal that hides you from Rand's DF-killer eyes ? Bashere would like that !

In one of the prophecies of the dragon, or poems . It is implied that Rand shall clean the ways....

Can't find anything like that in either the prophecies or the poems.

I am pretty sure it was Rand's POV he was referring to his letter from Verin, it read:

Up-Up-Down-Down-Left-Right-Left-Right B, A, Start

Errmmm no, you're going to have to provide quote for that.

This is a long shot but it might also be another glass column with other memories.

Maybe an attempt to create a new one that explain how to seal the dark one to all future generations or one to explain how to avoid re-drilling the bore after the goodies have won?

Or maybe an old one with old memories that will help in the last battle?

Or maybe just a record to be left, a history, created in the last moments of a dying world forever ruled by the shadow. By death and non-existence.

Hmm, let's see

"It had been useful at Maradon. Nobody knew he had it. That was important." (Sentence from aMoL)

I'm with the majority, this line sounds like Rand. Especially the "that was important" bit. It's one of those lines Rand tends to mutter when he's particularly obsessed about what he thinks is his duty.

"I should like to hear one of your stories. Perhaps you could tell me of the time your father and you visited Shara?" (Sentence from aMoL)

Could be Pevara talking to Androl if Androl turned out to be Farstrider's son, which honestly would explain quite a bit. Androl seems to have the same Wanderlust Jaim did and we know Jaim's memories were messed with by Ishy. Otherwise the epilogue since no one else should have anything to do with Shara.

Being married is not so bad, Perrin. Why didn't you tell me it was not so bad? I think I am rather fond of it." (Sentence from aMoL)

Yeah, Loial it is. Probably while smoking his pipe following in between "Om Nom Nom"s

"Pass his bond to me." (Sentence from aMoL)

Either someone talking to Alanna- though at this point I think it's rather too late for one of them to take her bond over- or someone actually managed to bond Mat and Tuon wants it.

"Creator shelter us," she whispered.

Mat scowled. "You know, that's what Tuon said." (Sentence from aMoL)

One of the wonder girls. Probably either Egwene or Elayne. They are the ones for dramatic whispers

The right thing had always seemed clear to Galad before, but never had it felt as right as this. Those streaks of light were like indicators on a map, arrows pointing his way. The Light itself guided him. It had prepared him, placed him here at this moment. (Sentence from aMoL)

Galad on LSD perhaps? If not he's probably charging straight across the metaphorical cliff and the question is how many others he'll manage to drag over it behind him. You know the shadow uses some kind of superweapon and just because it's shiny Galad runs straight into the fire.

"Nobody travels the Ways," Ituralde said, aghast. (Sentence from aMoL)

Hahaha, get it? "Nobody travels the Ways" Except for just about everybody. Hahahaha- Not! I can see this bad joke coming from a month away. Seriously BS that's not going to be funny.

"Egwene strode around a frozen pillar of glass in her dream. It almost looked like a column of light. What did it mean? She could not interpret it."

Definitely something Rand did or is doing. Could be something he does after he breaks the Seals, something desperate because his plan or rather lack there of kinda messes things up and forces him to do something pretty stupid.

memory #9

The letter was written in Mat's hand. And, Elayne noticed with

amusement, the handwriting was much neater and the spelling much better

in this one than the one he'd sent her weeks ago.

Unless the letter is a fake nothing very interesting in this one.

It's nothing but another bandage.

I was going to say that exact same thing. It will be very interesting to count the number of things in AMoL that are reactions to fan outcry around parts of TGS and ToM. Egwene's stance on seals, Mat's letter etc.

It could be a bandage but it doesn't have to be. There are many other explanations possible.  Firstly, the letter could be fake as I said. I'm actually having a hard time seeing why Mat would write Elayne a letter at all. He has to show up at Merrilor very soon and she is there in person. It can be of course form some much later point but again why write a letter? If it's about something important Mat would likely want to discuss it in person. And if the letter is written after Mat teams up with Tuon she would probably supervise his handwriting.

Wow, imagine that Elaida spilled bonding as one of her secrets (though she might not even know how it is actually done), somehow bonds Mat through her suldam (Tuon?), and then Tuon demands the bond back!

@memory 9

I hoped that after 13 books with a complete absence of reasonable communication, and a meeting set for the FOM, our hero's would finally realize that it's oh so practical to simply talk to each other... and then they're still sending letters right before the end of the world?!?!?

The thing that popped into my mind at first is that it might be an apology out of guilt, should he have found out what Verin's letter warned.  Yet Elayne reading such a letter about the destruction of her capital can't really be associated with amusement.  Internally, what happened at Caemlyn has to be tearing her apart inside at least a little, no matter what stage of the story we're at.  So I don't really have a good guess, other than 'thanks for the Medalion ter'angreal copies, they saved our butts.'  But a letter, for that?  In this series?  I don't know.

Winespringbrother at TL mentioned the issue of penmanship.  Mat's penmanship has always been sloppy whether he's being serious (ACoS) or apparently intentionally over-the-top ridiculous (ToM).  There's no time really for improvement in that regard with the LB looming, and missing an eye can't help either.  Grasping at straws led me to think maybe his memories had something to do with it, but Elayne recognizes his hand explicitly, so it's not really even an effective bandage for it's probable purpose.

@Kitty  that's a pretty neat idea about Elaida, though Mat would have to take the medallion off for some reason for it to work.

true, I forgot about the medallion; truth be told, I would never ever take that off amongst a bunch of unpredictable seanchan... Though I could imagine that Tuon can trick him to take it off to show/protect her. I would actually love to read such a scene. I mean, what would you expect to happen when bonding someone with the adam?

Hmm, I've thought about it some more (like 5 whole wine-soaked minutes), and I think the whole situation with Tuon/Mat/Elaida extremely likely. The last we've seen of Tuon, she completely denies being a potential channeler herself. At the same time, she has seen from Joline and co how useful a warder bond can be if you want to control your pet. Thus, I believe it very likely that she'll try to bond Mat, and that it's equally likely that she will channel through a damane to do so.

In those 5 minutes I've also realized I would be a horrible captured damane; it would take forever for me to remember my new name and my suldam would have to suffer through waves of indirect doubt: 'it was rosie, no, chica, no, kore, no, it rhymed with blabla...'

I know I did my own share of crying out, but I honestly think it would have been better for BS to stick to his guns instead of making AMOL an apology tour for minor details such as Mat's penmanship, the taste of wines etc.

@Kittyspagitty and Sid

There were some hints  that Tuon might bond Mat eventually but it isn't likely to happen in AMOL IMO. Certainly she wouldn't be learning how to do it from Elaida of all people who most likely doesn't even know the required weaves. Even Pevara who previously expressed interest in having a warder had to ask Yukiri to see the weaves. Elaida never showed any interest in bonding anybody.

Also, even if Tuon starts channeling in AMOL she likely won't be able to channel to any high degree right away and will be similar to Seta and Bethamin who couldn't do much of anything by themselves to begin with despite being long time sul'dam. I recall that there were some speculations that Tuon might be able to channel strongly right off the bat based on how well she was able to do through Joline but  recent comments by Sanderson pretty much rule that out IMO.

So Tuon bonding Mat is something that would likely be left off for the outriggers if they ever materialize.

Ditto.

As for the content of the letter, I'm thinking he leaves a note before he goes to Ebou Dar for Tuon. He can't just disappear without telling anyone but he doesn't want to talk to anyone about going to see his wife so a letter is the way to go.

She wouldn't, though, not if they're right. And she wouldn't need to channel at all. All she has to do in order for someone to pass his Bond along to her is to allow herself to be recipient of a weave of which she doesn't know a whole lot. If Min's any indication, you don't even have to have the potential for channeling to hold someone's Bond (although, the method Elayne used to get Min Rand's Bond might require knowledge and talent that Tuon's damane lack).

@yoniy0 I haven't considered that possibility but I find it unlikely too. I doubt very much that Mat would let anybody other than Tuon bond him. Given Mat's medallion it would have to be done with his consent.
