Where I live, we are celebrating the festival of Lights, Diwali. This is a five-day festival and the main day is tomorrow but it started yesterday.

It is the most important festival here and I thought to wish everyone(when though hardly anyone of you celebrates it)

Happy Diwali!

Diwali is like the Indian New Year.

Here is India during Diwali, this is a satellite photo.

A lot of lights. :P

Anyways, i'll let Pank tell more about it, since she knows more of the native customs as she actually lives in India.

So, today is the main day. There is a small ceremony which varies from family to family. Then fireworks ! but they cause pollution and not let me sleep at night.

I could tell you about myths and all but that would become too boring.

And chuckles, Feast of Light reminds me of Diwali. But Diwali is not new year.

Feast of Lights looks like a mixture of Diwali and Holi. On Holi social barriers break and we can throw water or colours at anyone. I call Holi the Festival of Madness.

Mobarak is a (Urdu?)word used to say greeting and sal means year. So, in this way salmobarak means happy year. More appropriate would be nya sal which means new year. But according to Hindu calender Holi is new year.
