Appearance

Physical Description: 5'4" tall, dark chestnut hair that falls in waves to her shoulders, blue eyes so dark they are almost indigo. Has a scar on her upper right cheek stretching to her eyebrow, which was inflicted at the age of 16.

Special Skills: Enhanced knowledge of the world and politics through her upbringing in a noble house. A expert at Daes Dae’mar. An enhanced ability to shield and/or sever other Channelers, not fully explored IC yet.

Knowledge Weakness: "Street smarts" or practical knowledge is not Gianna's strong suit. Excellent horseback rider.

Physical Weakness: She is self conscious of her scar. Is graceful, but has no sense of weapons.

Personality weakness: When she entered the Tower, she had the tendency to be stuck up and haughty. Trips to the Mistress of Novices and her inability to touch Saidar for the first six months in the Tower changed that. Her self-confidence fails her at times, because of her refusal the first time she was tested for Accepted. Slightly paranoid regarding what others think of her. She holds an extreme vendetta for her uncle, Toram Riatin. She is a loner, and tends towards depression. She greatly misses her dead family.

Personality: Friendly, if a bit shy around others in the Tower. When dealing with non-channelers, a bit of her old commanding air still creeps in around the edges. Enjoys teaching and politics. Has a strong sense of justice.

Family: Father Sevile Riatin, died 978 NE in a fire. Mother Cerise Riatin (nee Damodred), died 974 NE in childbed—the infant was stillborn. Brothers Eyric and Eyrol Riatin (twins), died 976 NE in the Aiel War. Uncle Toram Riatin, living. Aunt Ailil Riatin, living.

History

Outcast

At the age of 16, Gianna Riatin loved life. Her future was open to any possibility, one of the benefits of being a beautiful young scion of a powerful Cairhienin House. For her sixteenth nameday, she held a ball to officially celebrate her debut in Cairhein society.

To impress the guests with an extravagance never seen before, she took the advice of a servant and contracted an “Illuminator” who supposedly put on indoor displays. As she descended the staircase with her father, the wrongly-placed displays at the bottom of the stairs ignited while they were standing over them. Gianna’s father Sevile was killed in the flames; Gianna herself was knocked unconscious.

When she woke two weeks later, she found her Uncle Toram had spread the rumor that Gianna had channeled, killing her father and starting the blaze that nearly burned down the manor. He forced Gianna to leave Cairhien under the pressure; the public felt she should be in Tar Valon. Gianna knew her Uncle was a master of the Great Game, but she had not thought he was so cruel to murder to secure the power of High Seat. She concluded that he was a Darkfriend, and vowed in her heart to have revenge some day.

Her plan was to travel to Tar Valon as ordered, and undergo the testing. She knew that she would fail the test; she could not be a channeler. Then she would return to Cairhien and bring her Uncle to justice.

But fate had a sense of humor, it seems—the Aes Sedai tested Gianna, and told her that while she did not already have the ability to channel, she could be taught the skill. Gianna was faced with a choice—become Aes Sedai or return to Cairhien. She chose the path of an Aes Sedai. But she will never forget her plan for vengeance on Toram Riatin.

Pride Comes Before a Fall

Gianna was like most nobles- haughty and imperious. Her attitude with others resulted in many trips to the Mistress of Novices for “attitude adjustment.” The Aes Sedai was able to beat some of the pride out of Gianna, but two other things contributed much more to her change in personality: her inability to touch Saidar, and her refusal of the test for Accepted.

For the first six months she was in the Tower, Gianna was completely unable to touch the Source. Many teachers despaired of it, trying everything possible to get her to embrace Saidar. Even her mentor Elyssa gave it up as a lost cause. Finally, Gianna was able to touch the Source through the efforts made by a Green Aes Sedai named Cemarillinin. Despite this breakthrough, Gianna struggled hard to catch up to the rest of the Novices. She felt paranoid that she was being looked down upon.

After three years as Novice, Gianna was summoned to the Accepted testing. She tried very hard to keep her composure, but the pressure of the testing was too much for her, and she refused to take the Test. A Blue Aes Sedai named Nastascia was at the testing, and Gianna was sure she spread the word of her failure there. Her paranoia grew as the Blues seemed to stop talking to her, and her mentor left the Tower. During these years, Gianna withdrew socially and underwent a deep depression. Throughout it all, she continued with her studies, although she was convinced she would never be summoned again.

Four years after her first testing, Gianna was summoned again for the Accepted test. Though she was surprised by the summons, she kept her cool and took the test this time. Nastascia was again present for the testing, which worried Gianna. Despite her worries, Gianna made it through the test, and donned the seven-banded dress of an Accepted.

Raising

Gianna spent eight years as an Accepted. She regained some of her confidence during this time, focusing on her studies, particularly that of Daes Dae’mar and politics. Despite this, she still had occasional bursts of paranoia about her future at the Tower. She tried not to focus on these fears and instead concentrate on her studies and preparations for the test to become Aes Sedai.

When she was summoned for the testing for the Shawl (993 NE), it caught her completely off guard. Gianna did her best to keep composure, which was made difficult by the presence of Nastascia at her testing again. Gianna was sure the Blue had it out for her, and was worried if it would affect her test.

She performed the test for the Shawl flawlessly, despite the best efforts of the sisters running the ter’angreal. There were a few particularly cruel tests that Gianna was sure that Nastascia put in.

After her testing, she spent her Night of Reflection doing something she had seldom done before—pulling a prank. To get back at Nastascia, Gianna lured her out of her bedroom and placed vermin in the Blue’s mattress. After hearing the shrieks later that evening, Gianna considered the score settled, and turned herself in to the Mistress of Novices.

The next day, Gianna took the Oaths of an Aes Sedai, and donned the shawl of the Blue Ajah.

She has not determined what is in store for her next; but she has not forgotten her vow of vengeance against her uncle. He must be brought to justice.
