General Mafia Strategy: Doc and Cop

So this is a very common scenario in a game, both the doc and cop have revealed and the doc has to WIFOM who they are going to pick. Now a lot of people say that the doc should never protect themself and that they should always protect the cop no matter what. However, I have two things about this, first of all, doesn't this make it a lot easier to have the mafia team kill the doc first, just give the town one more viewing, and then have the cop die? And my second is, that doesn't it provide some benefit to have a doc who is always alive so that doc can be a confirmed alive townie and so that people can eliminate them and get a better chance of getting mafia? Just to clarify, this is not because of any ongoing game, though this might be happening, I don't think so, but it might, this is just a general question for a really common scenario.

I have actually pulled off a wifom scenario that fits your quandry, though I was outed busdriver not doc with the doc dead. This was the game that coined the phrase "When in doubt shoot Nolder" made by Wombat because I openly stated in thread they I may target me, or I may target the cop and some other stuff like that. I ended up drawing the kill, while protecting myself. (incidently causing Nolder to die) This allowed our cop to survive. After that they didn't really target me or the cop, they tried to guess who I was redirecting on to instead.

I had a game once where I self-protected night after night, and the mafia kept thinking surely I would protect the cop but I never did. I blocked their kill three nights in a row that way. I'm all for the WIFOM, personally.

Well, it's better to reveal and be possibly night killed then to be lynched for sure.
