Piggybacking Mafia Games - Can it be an official allowed thing for New Player?

*Looks around to make sure there is no-one from JN watching*

OK ... Let's try this again. I have had talks with new DM members who are interested in playing Mafia, but nervous of just jumping in and getting on with it.

Fair enough.

Would it be possible to set up a Mod Approved system of Piggybacking, via Modly QT threads?

This would work in two possible ways.

1. The New person plays a game and has a more experienced player on a Mod Approved QT, to ask for help and advice and to keep them from thinking the world is out to get them.

2. New person watches a game the more experienced person is playing, and has a Mod Approved QT to discuss thoughts and tactics and gameplay.

Only one of them would actually be playing in the game, so it wouldn't be like they were Masons - it's just a simple way of buddying/mentoring new players without having to set up a special game for them, and it can be ongoing too.

I would volunteer to be a Mentor if it was done like this, much good it may do them. They would certainly get very good at spam ;)

Thoughts? How many Mods would allow this to occur, and who would be up for being a Mentor if it worked like this?

well first of all I'd like to note that even though it's not quite the same thing as masons there is an advantage to being able to have someone sort of proofread your thoughts for logicfails if nothing else

but anyway I prefer the first option myself as I think jumping right in to a game would be most useful for a new player with or without mentoring

I would mod a game that allowed this although I think I'd prefer if it was only one or two people at a time

I would also volunteer to be a mentor I suppose

*cough* if anyone ever answers on the QT *cough* (mutter) <3!!

No really, it does sounds like a good idea in some ways. I think I'm confident enough after Kae's game where I might not take advantage of it, but if it had been available going into my first game, I'd dearly have loved the option.

And I suppose if it were an official known part of the game, people wouldn't be accusing the newbies of being scum because they sound coached, would they? (Never mind that I was scum in that game... shoosh you!)

OK, yeah. That would be good then.

That is exactly what my Firefly mafia is. Each player has their own mentor to help them understand better the intricacies of the game. The mentor is not there to play, but to point out things the new player needs to know and advise them on how to avoid the most common errors of the game (being over-defensive, protecting a scum teammate, etc.). I am already on the Mod List to run it again. Anyone that would like to be a mentor can PM me anytime so when signups begin we will be ready to go. In the meantime, if you like, here is the link to the first time I ran the game.

*goes to Amazon Prime*

*queues up every episode of Firefly*

A'ight. Will be prepared for this. *game face on*

I think this would be helpful for new players. By the time you have your game up and running, AK, I hope to have at least a couple of more games under my belt, hopefully getting experience with a variety of roles. I don't expect to have the time to familiarize myself with Firefly, though.

For what it's worth, the way I learned was by following a game - just reading along. Then when I played one, I was given the role of cop my very first game and I did okay with it. Those of you who feel not ready might try reading along as a game is playing. I'd recommend a simple one.

hmmm sounds like a plan lily...and song firefly is a badass series and i hate that it got cancelled for stupid soap operas

I've heard many good things about it... Unfortunately I haven't watched a lot of TV in several years (and currently don't have cable so as to ease the strain on my budget), so I missed a lot of good shows, this among them. I was already looking at that to be my next Amazon streaming video marathon (following all 3 seasons of Arrested Development and all of season 1 of Downton Abbey), but knowing there's an upcoming mafia game based on it, this is the clincher.

I hated feeling out of the loop in Kae's X-men game on the source material.

Aemon, any idea how long it's going to be before your game is up? I gotta figure out whether it needs to be a compressed marathon, or I can take it 1-2 episodes at a time.

It's called a hydra account.

Why does this not catch on?

Anyways, in my mafia game, a new person requested that they ahve someone help them. It was whatever for me. I was fine with it. I think it's mod preference.

I learned by just jumping in

I was linked to the mafiascum wiki during gameplay and that was a huge help

also this tutorial was probably the single most helpful thing

specifically the sample game you can follow along and watch

I guess that kind of goes with what you just said about watching a game but I think this is easier because it cuts out a lot of the intrigue and confusion and simply shows you how a game proceeds

i learned by jumping in as well and just picking up tips in games from different players playstyles. but everyone learns differently.

i was also about to post that Aemon is on the sign ups for a game like this *nods* i was a mentor in the last game and woudl love to be a mentor in the upcomming one, so mark me down if you haven't already Aemon.

with the last Firefly, there were 12 players. it as a basic set up 3 scum, 1 doc and 1 cop. i started the game with 2 metnee's, one of which got replaced and shifted to another Mentor. it was fun being a Mafia mentor and i can't wait to do it again

just remember, often in these types of situaitons the mentors will post the basic info and wait for you to ask the questions to prevent us from playing through you. so if you sign up for the game to be mentored, you've got to do alot of talking and question asking to get anything out of it.

Not sure why anyone would need mentoring. You play. You learn. That's it.

The more you play, theoretically the better you get.

The one thing everyone needs to know is that they will always be more wrong than right. It a statistical fact. No matter how "good" or how "bad" someone is.

Well, I've always had a mentor. But it's been more someone to go to to discuss things, rather than shadowing me in games. I've been watching this discussion, and I'm honestly still not sure how I feel about that. I'm not interested enough to participate, that's for sure.
