A very eclectic collection, let me tell you.

I'm sure a psychiatrist would look at my list and medicate me.

Everything from Metallica to Sarah Maclachlan to Rachmaninov to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to Green Day to Coldplay to Pearl Jam to Mozart to Marvin Gaye to STP to Nobuo Uematsu to Nirvana to Yo-yo Ma to the Temptations to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. And lots in between. About the only genres that get a total pass from me are overly-twangy "My dog just died from eating my truck's flat tire after my wife left me" country and hardcore "I got shot to add publicity to my album" rap.

OMG! WHY IS METAL NOT ON THE LIST!? dude...thats just not right. Anyways, even though this is the wrong place to put a music thread, i listen to Metal-heavy, melodic, black, death, gothic, stoner. i must say, a lot of gothic metal would be great for a WoT movie...shame no one is making one.

Some rock is good but everything out there is getting increasingly 'americanized' (no offence to any americans), it just means rock as a genre is losing its distinctive style and sound. The sounds of nickelback, creed, papa roach etc, thats rock. The crap that you also call rock like avril lavinge, hilary duff is just sickening. Take evanescence for example, they call themselves gothic rock...any half decent goth will tell you that its bs. They took a solid, real genre of music and commercialized it...where is the art in that? Just like Zara the clothing line who copies all the big names (Versace, D&G, dior etc) and pumps out modified versions of garbage. I'm not saying this doesn't happen in Metal but its to a lesser extent because we appreciate the artistic elements of doing music more than 50 cent and diddy, not so money orientated as the pop singers and not as attention seeking as the 'rockers'.

Heavy Metal, or no Metal at all.

I like Metal, lots of it, at loud volumes, with long hair and leather trousers. I consider Iron Maiden to have been the greatest band of all time. Also way up there are Offspring and Nightwish. A strange 3, I know, but I've been into Offspring since I was 7, and Nightwish for the past few months. I think you know you've found a really good band when you've heard every album, and like almost every song. While I like lots of other bands, I can't say that about many of them. Metallica, for example, have turned out a lot of bad stuff (St Anger, anyone?).

To a lesser extent there are a few other genres I listen to, classic rock (from The Who to Def Leppard), classical (there aren't many people who don't like Beethoven), and a fair bit of punk rock.

And I disagree about Evanesence, I think Fallen is one of the strongest CDs ever recorded, (I love every track, except Hello) and there is no denying Amy Lee's singing on it is incredible (I maintain she's the only competition in the 'best female singer' category for Tarja Turonen of Nightwish). And this is not the word of the 15-year old girl who also buys S-Club 7, I'm a Mercyful Fate fan.

There are also some bands which, like them or not, I will not hear a word said against (The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Queen, and of course Europe).

For those of you incensed that your favorite genre was left out...This was an evil spammer. I deleted the porn links, since it seemed like an interesting discussion was starting. But this "person" isn't going to come back to clarify anything.

Metal to the bone. It's only in heavy metal where you can regularly find bands that are really instrumentally talented, with all the lead guitars, and complex musical arrangments. It's also in "real" heavy metal bands where you can find singers who really know how to sing, and sing well, not the Eddie Vedder(spelling?) kind of trash which everyone can do, and all that mediocre style of singing.

I also hate the fact that rock is now riding the goth bandwagon in metal, thanks to such untalented pseudo metal/dark bands such as Manson, Evanescence, Disturbed, Mudvayne and all that neo crap you hear on the radio and see on MTV!

Personally, my favorite band is Dream Theater, and if you can find a band that's more instrumentally talented than these guys, please let me know. What about Maiden as ILS said? - probably the greatest rock singer of all time, one of the best bassists in the world - and 3 LEAD guitarists!

Modern rock/metal has become decadent and all about looking cool.

This is very untrue, any genre of music has bands that are talented some are just harder to find than others. Having said that chances are they won't be bands you hear on the radio, you have to have no talent to get played on the radio it seems. (Generaly speaking of course)

Heh, heh, of course there are talented bands from every genre; I was merely speaking in hyperbole. :) I listen to some black metal, too; but now a days I have to be in a certain "mood" to listen to it. I'm more into death metal. Death and Carcass, anyone? Man, that sounds weird...
