DRAGONMOUNT

A WHEEL OF TIME COMMUNITY

Music that makes you think of WoT?

Ok, so have you ever been listening to a song that made you think of a character or a particular scene from the Wheel of Time?  Maybe it's just me, but occasionally I'll hear something that strongly evokes a certain character.

I'm curious to hear any suggestions.  An ad-hoc wheel of time soundtrack if you will, not a film score, although I would die for something like that!

     1. Moridin -- Vicarious by Tool

This track just feels very Moridin to me.

     2. Rand's turning point atop Dragonmount --  Stand Alone by The Cult

3. Lanfear/Cyndane -- #1 Crush by Garbage

Umm, yeah.. Very you Mierin... Actually a number of Garbage songs work for her.

4. Rand's battle at the blight / defense of Maradon -- Indestructible by Disturbed.

They couldn't even look at him. My mouth just hung open while reading this part.

5. Padan Fain/Mordeth -- Burning Inside by Ministry

To me this track seems to encapsulate a bit of the absolute maelstrom of insanity that is, or was Padan Fain.

Cool I'll give it a shot. I wanted to link some of the songs you guys could hear them if you want, but didn't want the big embedded youtube boxes filling up the page. To see the vids, delete the space between the "?" and the "v" in all the links.

Rand & Elayne's fling in TSR: The National - Apartment Story

A song about two people wanting to hold on to their youth and escape the responsibility of adulthood. Like Rand and Elayne (especially Rand), mounting pressure and responsibility drives the song's narrator to spend what time he has reveling in shallow intimacy with a new partner.

Fain in TOM: Current 93 - The Inmost Night

David Tibet in one of his most delightfully insane moments, capturing the peak of Fain's madness depicted in the TOM prologue.

Lews Therin: Brand New - Bed

A sad song from the perspective of someone who's just committed domestic violence as the aftermath of a particularly heated fight with his partner. Filled with regret, just like LTT. Couldn't find a youtube of it but here are the lyrics:

Graendal: Deftones - Feiticiera

Song could be from the POV of a modern version of one of Graendel's victims. It's about a guy who gets kidnapped by some malicious girl, with some extra details  Sensual vocal delivery suits the indulgent way Graendal is usually described.

And more:

Mat: Tech N9ne - Caribou Lou

You know why. Because Matrim bloody Cauthon likes to party, and what's a party without girls and alcohol?

Dumai's Wells: Burzum - Det Som Engang Var

After about 4 minutes, the mood of this track really sums up the massive, unrestrained violence of Dumai's Wells.

Lan&Nynaeve: Rise Against - The Good Left Undone

A song about a guy who understands that his relationship with his partner will be ultimately harmful to her. He leaves her for what he perceives to be her own good, but loves her and always wishes circumstances were different so that he could return.

Okay, just came up with a few:

Rand - "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd...

"You've worn out your welcome, with random precision

Rode on the steel breeze

Come on you raver, you seer of visions

Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!"

Moridin - "the Man Who Sold the World" by David Bowie

"We passed upon the stair, we spoke of was and when

Although I wasn't there, he said I was his friend

Which came as some surprise I spoke into his eyes

I thought you died alone, a long long time ago" ......actually, the whole damn song is in this vein.

Faile - "I'm a Bitch" by Merdith Brooks ... heehee

I just happen to have been listening to a lot of Three Days Grace when I read all the books for the first time, so now I can't hear any of their songs without associating them with Wheel of Time.

And some of them are actually rather fitting as well:

I know Led Zeppelin was strongly inspired by Lord of the Rings, for some of their songs anyways, but I can't help but think of the Wheel of Time whenever I hear "Battle of Evermore". The light and airy backdrop with a foreboding forefront just reminds me of the earlier volumes in the series, when Rand was discovering who he was and when the Shadow was just re-emerging. Especially this line: "The Dark Lord rides in force tonight, and time will tell its woe."

The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel: Nynaeve's conversation with Rand in the Gathering Storm about how Rand has given up on life. "Hello Darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk to you again" is a great line, and appropriate for the scene.

The Razor's Edge by AC/DC: Rand's destruction of Graendal's palace in The Gathering Storm. AC/DC is pretty badass to begin with, but this may be their most badass song, and it's perfect for the occasion.

Nightwish - Kinslayer.

Had to be one :)

Some wounds never heal

Some tears never will

Dry for the unkind

Cry for mankind

Even the dead cry

- Their only comfort

Kill your friend, I don't care

Orchid kids, blinded stare

Yeah. That one could easily be one. I already thought about it when I first saw the title (I also like this music), but I never had the lyrics, and I can't remember me the text, because I only listened it once. I have three, but all of them have "wheel of time" in the lyrics.

Wheel of Time - Blind Guardian.

Ride into Obsession - Blind Guardian.

Smoking Ruins - Ensiferum

"My Eyes" from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog reminds me of Rand and Egwene in TGS. Someone should make a WoT version. Something like:

Rand-

Any poor wool-headed fool

Can see we've let the Lord of Chaos rule

To the point where I can't tell if it'd be better then than now

If I broke all the Seals on Shayol Ghul.

Listen close to everybody's heart

How soon it beats its last.

All that is is shattering apart

And fading to the past.

I cannot believe my eyes!

That was Semirhage in disguise!

But it's plain to see

Darkness inside of me

Is on the rise...

Egwene-

Look around, we're living on the hallowed ground.

Three thousand years of great renown: it's time to make the Tower sound

And I believe there's good in everybody's heart

Light keep it yet steadfast.

With hope you can do your part

Until the storm is past.

I cannot beleive my eyes!

Have the sisters at last grown wise?

For it seems to me

Some kind of harmony

Is on the rise...

Rand-

Any poor wool-headed fool

Knows I must be as stubborn as a mule.

For the Dark is everywhere and Tuon doesn't seem to care The Dark will use our petty struggles as a tool!

Listen close to everybody's heart

How soon it beats its last.

All that is is shattering apart

And fading to the past.

I cannot believe my eyes!

How the world's filled with filth and lies!

It will have from me

Peace for eternity

In its demise...

Egwene-

Take it slow

They look at me and seem to know

All that I must still strive to show

And suddenly I feel this glow

For I believe there's good in everybody's heart

Light keep it yet steadfast.

With hope you can do your part

Until the storm is past.

I cannot believe my eyes!

How the Seanchan defile the skies!

Yet it seems to me

Chances of victory

Are on the rise...

With thanks to Joss Whedon :mat:
