Brian Jacques (1939-2011)

Always the tide comes flowing in

Ever it goes out again

Sleep 'neath the shore evermore

Free from hunger and pain.

-Gonff the Mousethief, Mossflower

I do not know if any of you are familiar with Brain Jacques but he deserves mad accolades for bringing many a young child and adult to the fantasy genre. Brian Jacques was the creator of the series Redwall. It is a fnatasy series where the main characters are fuzzy lil creatures. Field mice, raccoons, evil lil rats and what not.

All of them wearing lil bits of armor and carrying swords and halberds. Well, the legend that is Brian Jacques has fallen at the age of 72. We should all have a moment of silence for such a greivous and tragic loss. Thank you Mr. Jacques. If only I had been able to get the full collection.

My favorite poem was from, you guessed it, the Long Patrol.

The Ballad of Tammo

Somtimes I sit here through the night,

Dreaming of those far - flung days,

I'll gaze into the fire's warm light,

As if into some sunlit haze.

And here they come, those comrades mine,

Laughing, happy, brave to see,

Untarnished by the dust of time,

Forever fresh in memory.

The way we marched, the feasts so grand,

I'll tell you of them all,

From Salamandastron's west strand,

And up north to Redwall.

Of high adventures each new dawn,

As side by side we stood in war,

This tale is told that you may learn,

Just what true friends are for.

Wow...the Redwall books were the first fantasy books I ever read, starting in the fourth grade. Among my favorites were Mossflower, Mattimeo, The Bellmaker, the Pearls of Lutra, and Marlfox. Outcast of Redwall was the first book I cried really hard in :)

This is such sad news.

How odd is that. Today at the library I found a very worn copy of this very book in the bottom of the for sale box. ^^ So I'll finally get to sample some of his writing. ^^

I've always been fond of the Badger Lords. I remember working in the library when I was in high school and sneaking into the shelves to nab a copy of his book to read while I worked.

I also loved how the little ones talked. Them and their 'gurt big meanies' I loved the little hedgehogs the most.

EEEEEUUUUUULLLLLAAAALLLIIIIAAAAAA!!!!!

Long may Redwall stand in his memory.
