DRAGONMOUNT

A WHEEL OF TIME COMMUNITY

WoT Based music, travel and food threads

To cut a long story short, I am currently having a good argument in the Staff Board about advertising activities in the Social Groups to the wider WoT community. At the moment, only WoT related activities can be advertised on the official Dragonmount Twitter and Facebook accounts to the WoT community. I am trying to get all activities on DM to be advertised to the WoT Community. In the long run, I feel I am going to win, and hopefully the new Social Group Admin will see it that way. However, I am going to try and go half way for the short term with WoT based activities since, shock horror, we are a WoT forum.

It looks like our Jak O' The Shadow verses thread will be going out to the whole of the WoT world. I will dig out th first thread so that can also be advertised to the public.

Now, I am looking for other ideas that relate to music, travel and food in WoT. I think food will probably be off the list, as I can't remember too many scenes about food. I know there are plenty of songs in the books, but can't remember any (since I don't have my books with me).

One idea I had is that we could do a travel brochure on the major cities of WoT-land, or each individual country.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

The food is mostly bread and cheese, though it might be fun to discuss the proper brewing methods of teas across Rand Land. I can take a look to see if there is any real break down on the types of cheese. I know they do explain that they different breads. Based on RJ’s descriptions, I have seen Flat Breads, crusty breads and sweet breads. So we could discuss the merits of each. (When they are traveling they mostly have flat breads and dried meat as flat bread does not spoil as quick due to the low moisture content.) As a parody we could talk about proper weevil removal and ways to preserve food against the consistent rot. We could also go through and ID what was eaten at each Inn to try to recreate a Menu for each.

On a side not Corki I sent you a PM about the Cav project ‘Where in the World is the Band’ Can you look at that we are ready to lunch if you can go ahead and give the go ahead.

Well they do get a little more information on the tea if you look at what they are saying. For instance they do say that there are several “Berry” teas as well as many herbal teas. I think we could also use the descriptions to support the separation of what is known as Oolong, White, Green and Black teas based on the POV of the person drinking it.

Oolong- Most common 'Brown' tea, less body and bitterness then the black

Green- taste like fresh leaves or grass more so than the black or oolong.

White- "are the least processed of any tea and therefore taste the most like fresh leaves or grass."

Black – the Dark full body full flavor and bitter tea.

There would be arguments of course as it is all due to interpertaion but I do think it is do able. (Just not sure if it is really Band Like, Now discussing the different Alcoholic beverages found would seem a bit more Band like to me.)

Despite my general no alcohol stance, i agree with Canis on that one!

And i would say I could help make up mock reviews of randland towns and countries but considering i have none of the books with me, I don't think I'll be able to do anything sorry :(

Canis, you forgot Rooibos - which is most likely what they're drinking if they mention herbal tea.

That would be a great topic to debate; my understanding of 'Rooibos' or Red bush tea is more of a regional understanding. In other words you have Black, Green and "red" or Oolong versions of the 'Rooibos.' Red bush only comes from Africa and the herds used give it its unique red hue. It is my opinion that the move to call it 'Rooibos' is more a marketing move then a culinary definitive. Think of it like blueberry or even pine teas, each has the chance to be one of the clarifying descriptors but would not be a descriptor themselves.

I can't recall seeing much in the way of alcoholic variety. I'm only on The Fires of Heaven, but to the best of my recollection I've only seen wine and the basic fermented beverages (ale, beer, etc.) mentioned. Maybe there was a mead mentioned somewhere. I'm pretty sure that distilled beverages haven't popped up. (Distillation of booze in real life dates back to the 700s in some parts of the world, according to Wikipedia.) As to whether it falls within the Band's purview, I'm all for it. (Devil's advocate moment: the Ogier might question whether this is a Band area; they claim to be the place to discuss beer.)

YEa well that is the Ogier and I have said before everyone want to be in the Band they just don't know it. Yes I agree to define the Beers and wines would be a bit trying I think the teas would be easier as RJ spent more time defining them. There is more by way of Alcoholic beverages in the books but as i am terrible with time line I do not want to risk ruining anything for you. But there are some hard drinking sub plots in there that I think can be exploited.

Another Idea I had recently was This place looks like ....

In that we can take Google earth and find spots that look like places in Randland. Find a quote and match a Longitude and Latitude so that people can find it on google earth.

Well, I just got to TFoH Chapter 30 last night. Brandy is mentioned several times when Rand meets with the Tairens and Cairhienin. Also, Rand and Tam were headed toward Emond's Field to drop off some brandy for the Beltine festival at the start of TEoTW. I think if I were in Randland, I would miss a good rum.
