Nominate Your Favourite Songs From The 1980s!

February is 1980s music month in the Band of the Red Hand Social Group. It was an intriguing decade of music - synthesizers were on the up, rap and hip/hop became popular, pop music emerged and then there was the rock music. So a bit of everything. And to celebrate that, in addition to our weekly "Tune or No Tune" and "Original vs. Cover" thread, we will be having an "It's A Knockout" thread to find out what we think the best song of the decade was. According to VH1, it was Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. Will we agree?

Between now and SATURDAY 12TH FEBRUARY 2011, nominate your favourite songs from the 1980s to challenge for the title of DM's favourite song of the 1980s. Follow the simple proforma below to get a nomination in. Name your song, explain why you have nominated it, and provide a YouTube clip (or similar) of the song.

Song and Artist:
Reason for Nomination:
YouTube (or similar link):

You can nominate more than one song. Any nomination that is seconded, i.e. Krak suggests song X and Imperium agrees with the nomination, automatically qualifies for a place in the "It's A Knockout" contest. Otherwise, it will be done on a first come, first served basis. If there are any gaps at the end of the nomination period, I will fill in the gaps.

PLEASE NOTE: I am looking for a minimum of 8 nominations, and a maximum of 16. If we get more than 16, all the better and we can have a massive contest!!

If you have any questions, please post them in this thread.

The two songs I am putting forward are the songs I play the most on Rock Band 2.

Song and Artist: Round and Round by Ratt

Reason for Nomination: In the VH1 list that Corki posted this came a lowly 51st probably because it is no way near as well known. I think this is a Hidden Gem of a song. It is too damn catchy as well!

YouTube (or similar link): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u8teXR8VE4

Song and Artist: Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran

Reason for Nomination: I to be honest have no idea why I like this song so much, its just one of those songs I hear on the radio and I won't flick over

Now I am going to put forward some songs that didn't even make that list.....

Song and Artist: Run to the Hills by Iron Maiden

Reason for Nomination: I decided to put the most main stream song from the amazing Number of the Beast Album. Its a classic! (Although I prefer Number of the Beast)

YouTube (or similar link): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDd-GXkMrJs

Song and Artist: Battery by Metallica

Reason for Nomination: I would play this the most of rockband 2 (however I am not good enough to do the drums for it...more practice required. Thought I would put through a heavier song and well you surely have to have a Metallica song if your going through 80s..

Was gutted going through this Painkiller by Judas Priest was 1990....so close

oh and I second Living on a Prayer...it really has to be in there...

Song and Artist: Modern English's Melt With You

Reason for Nomination: Just one of those post punk, new wave songs that says 80's. That and the guitar player's hair...

Song and Artist: Billy Idol: Dancing With Myself

Reason for Nomination: It is not the 80's without Billy.

Second: Billie Jean, West End Boy's and Round and Round

Song and artist: The Cure - Just Like Heaven

Reason: One of the most iconic bands during the 80s, it is not easy to pick one particular song. But, for the populace, this is probably the most wellknown song

Song and artist: The Smiths - I Know It's Over

Reason Ok, The Smiths are mostly known for more danceable pop tunes. But for me, this song is what cemented my love for the gloomy Mancs.

Youtube My link

Song and artist: The Clash - Straight To Hell

Reason By many considered the #1 punk band of all times. But the song in their catalogue is a ballad, marked by sadness rather than the usual anger. The eerie bassline would laater be sampled by M.I.A for her hit single Paper Planes.

Youtube

Song and artist: The Stone Roses - I Wanna Be Adored

Reason The Stone Roses' self titled debut album are often mentioned as one of the best British albums ever, and it is a key link between Madchester and the Summer of Love, and the Brit pop that would come to dominate the early 90s. And no song is more symbolic of all that than this.

Song and Artist: The One I Love by R.E.M.

Reason for Nomination: I love the guitar twangs, power chords, the big drum beats and the pure simplicity of the song. Some say it was the first top 10 hit by an alternative Rock Band (not sure if that is true). Either way it launched REM into the Mainstream.

Song and Artist: It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) by REM

Reason for Nomination:"That's great it starts with an earthquake" This song is just fun. To listen to and to sing along with

Another song that is not on that list...

Song and Artist: Africa by Toto

Reason for Nomination: Totally shocked this failed to make VH1's list. While not the normal music Toto made, it is one of their instantly recognisable songs. Classic tune!

I am siding with Maj on this one.

I have updated the list, which includes all songs challenging for the honour of being DM's favourite song from the 1980s. I will get the "It's A Knockout" thread out shortly.
