Corki
"Tune or No Tune" continues to have 2 threads posted a week as I try to play catch up. Last week saw us complete the songs of 2010 and the up and coming artists of 2011 - with the exception of the winner of the "It's A Knockout" contest for the top 16 singles from the UK chart in 2010. The winning tie will go up for the vote next week. "Tune or No Tune" is a simple, weekly thread hosted by the Band of the Red Hand Social Group. All you need to do is decide whether the song I have chosen is a TUNE (i.e. you love it) or a NO TUNE (i.e. you hate it). Quite simple, really! So, after looking at the music of 2010 and 2011, which ended up with 4 "No Tunes" and 2 "No Tunes", we are now moving onto our February Theme - music from the 1980s. The 1980s was an interesting period for music. It saw the use of synthesizers rise, along with sampling and hip hop/rap. Pop music really emerged, and there various forms of rock music, such as new wave, soft rock, and glam metal. So, time for some hip/hop that started to come to prominence in the 1980s. I am picking another big song of the 1980s - Walk This Way by Run-D.M.C. - and according to VH1, which ranked this song as #9 on its "100 Greatest Songs of the 80's". It peaked at number 4 on the US Billboard in 1986, and at number 8 in the UK. It thus become one of the first big selling rap singles. Walk This Way is a cover version of Aerosmith's 1975 original. Run-D.M.C. had Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry guesting on vocals and guitars. The music video is very symbolic, with the rock band in a musical duel with Run-D.M.C. before Tyler breaks through the barrier. The song also led a revival for Aerosmith after many years in the music wilderness. While not a great fan of rap and hip/hop music, this is a really nice song as it sums up the music of the 1980s. Both parts work really well, and help give it its iconic status. Therefore, I give Walk This Way by Run-D.M.C. the vote of TUNE! For those of you who haven't heard the song, here is a link to YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIbHPs_M55Q The poll closes in a week's time, which is Monday 7th February 2011. So make sure you vote now before the time for the latest "Tune or No Tune" poll finishes! Also, if you want to suggest a tune for "Tune or No Tune", do not hesitate to drop me a PM. Corki
Banders, Please Note: Voting in "Tune or No Tune" threads counts towards posting in an activity thread for points gained through the roll call. However, in order for that to qualify, you need to post that you voted. Otherwise you won't get the recognition or the promotion points via the roll call. Corki
Corki - Can I do the Its A Knockout for the 80s (I promise they won't all be hair metal songs.. - unless you let me do a hair metal Its a Knockout) What I was going to do was do a nomination thread. I am (hopefully) expecting more than 16 suggestions, so we will either have a longer than normal contest, or 2 running concurrently. It all depends on the number of nominations, which should be going up tonight.
