"Tune or No Tune" continues to have 2 threads posted a week as I try to play catch up. Last week saw us complete the songs of 2010 and the up and coming artists of 2011 - with the exception of the winner of the "It's A Knockout" contest for the top 16 singles from the UK chart in 2010. The winning tie will go up for the vote next week.

"Tune or No Tune" is a simple, weekly thread hosted by the Band of the Red Hand Social Group. All you need to do is decide whether the song I have chosen is a TUNE (i.e. you love it) or a NO TUNE (i.e. you hate it). Quite simple, really!

So, after looking at the music of 2010 and 2011, which ended up with 4 "No Tunes" and 2 "No Tunes", we are now moving onto our February Theme - music from the 1980s. The 1980s was an interesting period for music. It saw the use of synthesizers rise, along with sampling and hip hop/rap. Pop music really emerged, and there various forms of rock music, such as new wave, soft rock, and glam metal.

First up are British hard rock band Def Leppard and their 1987 single Pour Some Sugar On Me, which came from their Hysteria album. The song was born when producer Mutt Lange felt that the album was still lacking a song that would have an appeal beyond the hard rock fans who had bought Pyromania, their previous album. And over a 5 minute coffee break, the song came to him. The song is often regarding as the band's signature song, and in 2006, it was ranked #2 on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of the 80's".

It is rumoured that Hysteria was the most expensively produced album ever (at the time) - and despite shifting 3 million copies by the spring of 1988, production costs hadn't been covered. Despite this, it reached number 2 on the US Billboard, and made the top 20 in the UK.

With a good driving beat and rhythm, I am definitely into this. Though I am convinced some of the rifts appear elsewhere in the world of music - for example, Joan Jett's I Love Rock 'n Roll. Regardless of this, I give Pour Some Sugar On Me by Def Leppard the vote of TUNE!

For those of you who haven't heard the song, here is a link to YouTube.

The poll closes in a week's time, which is Monday 7th February 2011. So make sure you vote now before the time for the latest "Tune or No Tune" poll finishes!
