the thing is, my parents are so hard to talk to

it's not so much that they shut you down before you can start or anything like that

but if you want to have a private conversation with them, that's out of the question

and sometimes you just really need to go off somewhere so nobody else can hear (or HAS to hear)

especially because my brother just got home from his mission yesterday and it's still weird for him getting back into regular life so dealing with conflict has to be kind of extra not-fun for him, plus my younger siblings shouldn't have to deal with adult discussions and worries

and then if you do actually get to sit and discuss stuff with them, if they disagree with something you're doing or that you believe, it turns into a big deal

i get they're parents and want to make sure we're doing what they believe is the best for us

but it's to the point where they value being right more than they value the relationship

and that means that as a 22-year-old who is way past the point of having that submissive parent-child thing going on, it pisses me off when my parents sit there and try to pull this "we know best and you're stupid" crap on me

especially when there's stuff that we fundamentally disagree on and it's like

i'm an adult, you're not gonna change my mind just by being a bully about it or freaking out and telling me how wrong i am

yanno, if there's some coworker you know who talks to you about life issues sometimes, you're not gonna freak out and tell them how wrong they are and that you know best, if they're telling you about something they're doing that you think is a bad decision

if you advise them at all, it's gonna be from a "well here's what i'd do in your shoes" sort of place, like "here's my thoughts but i totally respect your autonomy"

and they just don't understand how to do that with their older children

so there's something i really feel like i need to talk to them about but i know they're gonna make a big deal about it
