Tune or No Tune - Do It Like A Dude by Jessie J

The come back for "Tune or No Tune" back in October didn't last! Blame my studies and exams for that. Anyway, 2011 is a new year, and I am hoping for a fresh start. I will try my best to do two "Tune or No Tunes" on a Monday night to try and play catch up on those I have missed during 2010.

 

So, Ellie Goulding and Starry Eyed were the first "Tune or No Tune" thread of 2011. Thesecond is now here! "Tune or No Tune" is a simple, weekly thread hosted by the Band of the Red Hand Social Group. All you need to do is decide whether the song I have chosen is a TUNE (i.e. you love it) or a NO TUNE (i.e. you hate it). Quite simple, really!

 

Every January, I tend to look at songs from the previous year. I will be doing that, but also looking to the future to see what we can look forward to (or ignore!). There is already a "It's A Knockout" contest for the top 16 singles from the UK chart in 2010. After looking back at 2010, we are now looking to an artist expected to be big for 2011.

 

And that artist is someone called Jessie J, another English singer/songwriter. She has had considerable success as a writer, penning Miley Cyrus hit Party in the USA, and has written songs for Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera. And following in the footsteps of Ellie Goulding, she won the BBC Sound of 2011.

 

Her début single, the dance-pop (which I question as a description!) Do It Like A Dude, was released in November 2010, and charted at number 25. After a bit of yo-yoing, it currently sits at number 5 on the UK charts. She claimed that she had written the song for Rihanna but decided to release it herself! And just watch her eyes on the music video (VEVO only sadly).

 

She has a second single out in March, which was previewed on Jools Holland. Considering rapper B.o.B. will appear on the single, I doubt it will be anything like the acoustic version of

, which appeared on Holland's show.

 

Do It Like A Dude is just about everything I dislike about music in the charts nowadays! I don't view it as music. However, I did like her acoustic version of Price Tag. Therefore, I give Do It Like A Dude by Jessie J the vote of NO TUNE!
