I don't know what age has to do with it. The Aes Sedai were written as these incredibly impossible to like characters, as if being able to touch the one-power has anything to do with a person's wisdom. Some of them have been alive for a long time, however that cannot be an excuse because the young Aes Sedai after receiving the shawl act like old women right away too. It is like the male and female characters were written with out any repoire with one another. Men go out and do while the women squabble and scheme and accomplish things through trickery. Some grow true wisdom as the story unfolds however, such as Moiraine and Nynaeve. Just an opinion.

Well, I dont KNOW that age has anything to do with it. Certainly, it doesn't always. But I suspect, just for one example, that older readers (especially parents, teachers or others with the responsbility for looking out for the well-being of teenagers) might find Nynaeve's early attitudes toward the TR four understandable.

Female, 24.

I'm still on KoD. I think my favorite at the moment is Moridin, or maybe Mat. Even though he is running around with Tuon. Rand, Lews Therin in Rand's head, Nynaeve, Siuan

I don't like Cadsuane. Ugh. I despise Elaida, sometimes Egwene, Mesaana, most Aes Sedai...

I'm at book 8.

I really didnt like Mat in the early books. But he's evolved quite nicely.

I like Rand. Well I understand some of the hard choices he's made.

I really like Aviendha. Probably because her romance with Rand is the most plausible(except for that gateway sequence.) It had time to develop and you could see the wall separating them being chipped away gradually.

I really like Moiraine too.

I like Rhuarc and Siuan.

I like Perrin. He dosent like it but he does what has to be done. The opposite of early Mat and the reason I didnt like him.

I hate the White Cloaks,Elaida, Basically anyone who messes things up.

male 20,

Avi and Rand (

also like a lot of the second and third tier characters regardless their bad-goodness, mostly because they aren't good or bad, they got there own motives and ideas loose from the fight between the DO and the Dragon. and are basically well written.

so i like Mor (truthseeker with a lot of imagination), Sevanna and Masema, Gaul (Bain and Chiad), Loial, Gawyn, Lanfyr, etc.

of the record: i think it's hard to pick a favorite when forced to choose between Rand (passionate and devote to duty,...) Mat (humorous, spontaneous and avoiding responsability,...) and Perrin (thinker, caring, firm,...) they all have there total awesome moments and qualities.

Bloke: 42

Likes: No particular preference as they all have their good points and bad points, I would often get into one thread and be disappointed when it switched to another character thread, then I would get into that etc. etc.

Dislikes: Gaggles of Aes Sedai. Whether in Salidar or the White Tower, whenever there are large groups of these together the story really starts to drag as it seems to become page upon page of competition to see who could stick their heads furthest up their own rear ends. These parts of the story both irritate and bore me.

Hello, fairly new member here!

I am 17 and male.

My favorite character is far and away Moiraine. She always seemed rather like a female Gandalf, wise and aloof, yet still active in events. Being one of the few non-hateable Aes Sedai also scored some points. I almost had a breakdown during her "death" scene and jumped for joy when Thom finally showed Mat the letter.

Close seconds are: Thom, Rand, Perrin, Verin, and Lan.

Least Favorites are: Elaida, Gawyn, and Tuon (why can she not just die?).

23, Male. Agnostic.

I started reading the series when I was 21 and absolutely dread (and hungrily anticipate) the ending.

My favorite characters are: A tie between Ishamael/Moridin (His nihilism is most in contrast to Rand Sedai's, which fortifies the sense of balance between the two) and Rand Sedai, Nyaneve (by a very close margin), Mat, Moiraine, Logain, Aviendha, Cadsuane, Perrin, Talmanes (he seems like a printed version of me), and Asmodean (Poor misguided chap, but supposedly wanted to be immortalized for his music which I can admire).

My least favorite: Elayne and her bloody goat (although she did show a little bit of sense and compassion towards Gawyn, which was completely ruined by her meeting with Morgase).

Male, 20

My two favorite characters are Rand and Nynaeve, so I'm not completely self-identifying. I really love the Forsaken-POV chapters as well.

Least favorite characters: Egwene (really, most AS), Gawyn. I also find many of Perrin's POV's really boring.

38, male.

Love: All of them at one point or other. Except Cadsuane.

Hate: All of them at one time or other. Especially Cadsuane... die die die.

I guess I'm just a sheep... I hate them when I'm supposed to and love them when I'm supposed to.

Except for Cadsuane.

Ahh the parenting thing. Although she's only a few years older. I was just saying that enjoying the Aes Sedai's attitudes towards the world is a difficult thing for a person of any age. I understand your thought process. A mean old woman who has lived past her prime and enjoys punking people on a day to day basis would love the hell out of Cadsuane.

28 Female.

Loves (in order): Mat, Nynaeve, Tuon, Birgitte, Suian, Aviendha, Verin, Thom, Elayne, Moiraine, Faile, Gareth, Perrin, Lanfear, Logain.

Hates (in orer): Min, Egwene, Rand, Alanna, Joline.

I generally like most of the characters but the ones I hate, I do so with a passion.

I've grown up with these characters for the last 15 years, can't wait for the series to end (at the same time, feel a bit sad too that the ending is drawing close).

Male, 15.

My favorite characters are Mat and Min. There are lots of others that I like, but these two are my favorites.

Top 10 Favorites in order: Min, Mat, Moraine, Thom, Birgette, Siuane, Lan, Tam, Logain, Nynaeve (since WH).

My least favorite characters: Egwene, Elayne. I don't hate anyone else except for Semirhage, and no one likes her.

I feel really bad for Rand, but he's not a really likeable character for me. I hope that he dies at TG, I feel that he could never be happy in the 4th age.

I go back and forth on Aviendha and Cadsuane. I like them sometimes, other times I don't. I dislike most Aes Sedai on principle. I don't hate the Seanchan like most people, and Tuon seems to be a good Empress IMHO.

I think back to around TSR when I liked Elayne and Egwene and it makes me shudder.

25 Male, read the series first time at 10 years old, and I missed so much, but I've re-read it many times since then and now I passionately preach the unsurpassed greatness of this series. There is no better. Period.

Well I often root for the heels, so I've also got a favorite bad guys list

Favs in order:

MAT! (he becomes the best char, thanks aelfinn&eelfinn)

Nynaeve (no other character, even Rand, has pulled off as much baller s--- as she has),

LOIAL (he really should get more votes, people),

Egwene (easy to dislike her but, does anyone endure what she does? from Seanchan, Aiel, Aes Sedai and then again Aes Sedai? I love her),

Aiel humor (not a character, but there it is)

Lini, is it? Elayne and Morgase's maid.

Cadsuane. Yeah I would hate her if it was me she was making miserable, but look at it from her perspective - she ROCKS! Sanderson ruined her like he ruined everything else, of course.

The Pevara/Seaine/etc. group operating in the White Tower. Finally Aes Sedai with some chutzpah.

Favorite heels:

Graendal (we get to know her better than any other Chosen, I think, and the way she operates is flawless),

Ishamael. Prologue - 'nuff said.

Elaida. I love her for her firm and unshaken resolve. She honestly believes she's the best thing for the world!

Asmodean (because I'm a musician and a wimp)

Aginor (he's Osangar, right?). Who would have thought he'd be the hero of the day?!

Padan Fain. I really like how he becomes a bad guy kind of outside the main dichotomy between the Great Lord and the Creator. As certain Darkfriend Asha'man discovered.

And...Savannah. Yup. She's a lot like Cersei Lannister, actually. Great heel.

Favorites:

Nynaeve: She's just so....amazing. She's so powerful and awesome and witty.

Moiraine: I love Moiraine, she's just so awesome and mysterious.

Least Favorites:

Mat: I know, a lot of people like him, but he's just REALLY Annoying to me. I mean, I get it, everyone doesn't really like Aes Sedai, BUT GET OVER IT!

14 Male,

favorites,

Talmanes (i like him because of what Matt is always saying about him), i do like the stories of birgitte also. And maybe it sounds strange for someone who walks in the light, i do like Isam/Luc for some way. He's evil i know, but there something strange about him which i like.

From the more important characters i do like Matt very much and Min (mostly the way she thinks about Rand).

I do not really like Perrin because he never plays a real big role (my opinion), i like everything with wolves about him, but it's just that he pretends to be importander then he really is.

I agree with you about Perrin. Rand is the Dragon Reborn, Mat is the leader of the Band of the Red Hand and Prince of Seanchan... And Perrin wanders around and fights Aiel occasionally. He feels much less epic than the other Taveren. My hope is that after A Making he'll become more interesting.

I'm a man. I'm 24 years old. I was tempted to say I was either a Japanese schoolgirl or a middle-aged African American... just to see what kind of reaction I'd get. These sorts of threads are ripe for it.

My liking of the characters is linked to Jordan's writing of them. Therefore I almost universally dislike the characters as written by Sanderson. I find them childish and irritating, especially in the immature vindictiveness shown towards authority figures like Cadsuane.

My favourite characters would be, in no particular order:

Egwene. During her time spent captured in the White Tower her strength, determination and total refusal to bend was truly inspiring. I loved her during that sequence. Brilliant writing.

Cadsuane. She understands the minds of others and knows how to apply this knowledge in order to cause them to submit to her influence. She's old, she's powerful, she's highly successful. An alpha female. Which, given the demographic of the readers, a majority of nerds, is why she is disliked so much.

Mat. A womanizer, a charmer, a scoundrel. A real hero and a man of his word. Hilarious when trying trying to deny, to himself, his bad influence on Olver.

Lan. I've always liked Lan. A strong silent type. A masculine archetype. Utterly disciplined and focused upon his war against the Shadow. A stony exterior covering a depth of passion and love for Nynaeve.

I did not dislike any of the characters as written by Jordan. Strange, perhaps, but I found them all to be different and I suspect this difference holds an appeal to different people who see something to relate to.

Particularily bad standouts, to my mind, from Sanderson would include Gawyn, Siuan and Bryne in the Gathering Storm and practically everybody in Towers of Midnight. Not for what they do or who they are, but how they are written.

An author puts himself in his work. I loved what Jordan offered, his grasp of various personalities and motivations, his capacity to maintain these different voices over a long series, embellishing them as they grew, marrying this growth to the plot.

I do not find any of these characters present in the new books, as the man who gave them life... now has none. So really my preference in characters is linked to a preference in authors which is not expressed in the new books.
