Your Lesser-Known ''Fave Scenes''

Recommended Posts

Some very good ones mentioned, for me. For me I tried to exclude al the "climatic" scenes from a book and the big stuff.

1. When Rand whines about Merana not getting good enough terms with the Sea Folk, and she totally unloads on him.

2. A lot of scenes of Mat in Ebou Dar: getting drunk with Birgitte and escapades with Tylin.

3. Rand and the Maidens: the inside jokes and the ones they don't get.

4. Moiraine in EoTW blazing the wall of fire and then the false trail to throw the Trollocs off.

5. Verin showing Siuan and Moiraine that she knows about Rand.

6. Mat bowing to Egwene as they are leaving for Ebou Dar "they can't treat a Two Rivers woman that way" or some such, and her thanking him.

7. Nynaeve healing Siuan and Leane.

8. Rand poisoning Eben after he goes insane.

9. NS, Lan to Moiraine, "He never understood, you surrender after you're dead."

10. Rand's entrance into Cairhien after dispersing the Shaido, with the cheering.

*note* most of these aren't "lesser-known" but I still love them *note*

I love when Rand and Elayne are gettin it on and min almost falls over in the hallway and says something to the extent of "oh my"

Perrin and Loial charging in at dumani wells

Rand going to meet Suian the first time and Lan has a chip on his shoulder

Rand RAGE screaming when Aviendha and Mat are taken out

and in TGS when Rand finally figures himself out with LT talking completely sane and basically says "maybe a second chance? to live and love again"

One of my favourites is Faile and Perrin talking on the boat in TDR

"I call myself Mandarb. Here's a lesson for you blacksmith, that means 'Blade' in the Old Tongue."

"That horse is called Mandarb."

"Oh ... call me Faile then."

I'm listening to tSR right now and while it's reconfirming the overall Perrin in the Two Rivers deal as my favorite subplot of the entire series it also has my two (connected) moments for this thread. The first one is when Perrin hears his family is "gone" and at first thinks they have just left and then is just in numb shock until Faile holds him and he just collapses into her. I think it's really a strong indication of their love. And then later after Perrin is shot by the Trolloc and is about to be healed by Alanna but is fading out of consciousness and going delirious and he reverts back to the mental state when he was coming to apprentice at Master Luhhan's and thinks about how beautiful Faile is and how much she means to him.

Not out and out, I love person X like it always is with Rand but actual thoughts and actions showing it rather than just saying it. Both scenes got me a little choked up.

There is a scene in LoC where Mat is walking through Cairhien, I think, and he is kind of just checking in on his troops. He pops in to different pubs and gambles a little, but he is really just getting used to the idea that he has men under him who rely on him. This is the first mention of the Red Arms, that I could find anyway, and they are soldiers who have been chosen to keep the other men under control in their off time. Nothing really happens, theres no danger and no one of significance says anything important. It's just Mat and a few of his officers sitting around a table drinking. I don't know why, but its my favorite Mat chapter, if not my favorite chapter in all the series. It carries the weight of Mats actions, it shows the consequence of his luck in recruiting able bodied men, it shows a different side of the Band. It's all just sort of comforting, that the camaraderie of the group will make sure that everything ends well for them. Whether it will be a comedy or a tragedy remains to be seen, but for now its a great view of the young General Mat as he gives up the Rogue Mat and assumes the mantle as Rands second in command as he prepares for the invasion of Illian.

Like I said, I don't recall which chapter it is, but if I find it on my next re-read I will post it and see if anyone agrees with me.

The bit where they meet up with the band in Tuon's POV and she says officers who are as liked as Mat is are usually unrespected and keep bad discipline, then Mat immediately controls his army with hand gestures immediately shutting them up and settling them down.

@ghoullio: Is it this one?

http://encyclopaedia-wot.org/books/loc/ch5.html

"Mat POV - Mat and the leaders of his Band of the Red Hand are staying at The Golden Stag in Maerone across the river from Aringill. Mat's Redarms defeated the White Lions who were holding Maerone. After their defeat they headed east, further into Cairhien."

...etc

I hadn't thought about it like that, I'll have to have a look!

ACOS: Rand and co. confront Colavaere after Dumai's Wells, when everyone thinks that they've been dealt with and are now out of the way.

"What can done, can be undone." -- Great line.

Galad defining chivalry.

"Hear me, Shienarans. I am Galadedrid Damodred, and this woman is under my protection. As for her companion, I would count it small loss to die in order to save her the smallest harm. If you allow either to come to the smallest harm, I will find you both and kill you."

Some great ones here...

Anyway, re-reading tDR at the scene where the wondergirls are kidnapped and are about to be sold to Myrddraal when the Aiel pour in. Egwene makes the fades shoot fire out of all the skin she can see, Elayne compresses them into a tiny ball, then Nynaeve balefires that ball. I don't think we see any other creatures/people get destroyed so thoroughly throughout the rest of the series. Oh, and then Rhuarc's like, "I'm glad you stepped in. We would have killed them but some of us might have died. Or all of us."

Here is my all time favorite scene/description. To set the stage, Galad and Masema have unknowingly secured the same boat for Elayne, Nynaeve, and Birgitte in some random river town in Ghealdan. While Galad and the Shienarans are escorting them to the boat, the entire town is being destroyed by rioters caused by the prophets people and the whitecloaks fighting over the boat and there are dead people everywhere. All of a sudden, a group of guys steps out in the street in front of the group and prepares to attack.

"He faced their charge as though awaiting the next dance at a ball, arms open and unconcerned, not even bothering to bare his blade until they were almost on top of him. Then he did dance, all his grace turned in an instant to fluid death. He did not stand against them; he carved a path into their heart, a clear swath as wide as his sword's reach. Sometimes five or six men closed in about him with swords and axes and table legs for clubs, but only for the brief time it took for them to die. In the end, all their rage, all their thirst for blood, could not face him. It was from him that the first ran, flinging away weapons, and when the rest fled, they divided around him. As they vanished back the way they had come, he stood twenty paces from anyone else, alone among the dead and the groans of the dying."

When I first read this, I thought of Galad as a minor irritant, a goody two shoes, as I was still somewhat in favor of Elayne at this point. But this is the most badass non-channeler fight scene in the entire series. Descriptive, but not down to the "sticks sword in gut, pulls out in time to take next man in throat" type of description that is common with a lot of the other swordplay scenes.

Some others:

"I can't abide snoring, boy." - Thom

Shortly thereafter: "It sounded like Thom was sawing wood cross-grain with a rusty saw." - Mat's POV.

Anytime someone who has previously underestimated the Two Rivers longbow gets a rude awakening and says something about it.

"I believe her exact words were 'If you decide to gut a fish, no use waiting til it rots.'" - Sheriam, on the Amyrlin deciding to raise Egwene to Accepted. For that matter, pretty much all of Siuan Sanche's fish sayings.

"You never had more than this, did you highness?"

"Like I said, I had enough."

When Perrin in the Two Rivers hears the advice Mistress al'Vere gives to Faile about how to handle men, and then hears Abell Cauthon (I think) saying pretty much the exact same thing on how to handle women. (Let them win small victories so they'll listen when something important comes up.)

The scene when one apparently drunk merchant is doing some light gambling with other merchants who think they are about to make a good deal. At one point her eyes narrow in a way to make Mat think she really isn't as drunk as she is pretending.

Lastly, the scene in the Stone of Tear where Mat is playing cards with some of the Tairen Lords and one of the cards comes alive and Mat throws his knife at it.

The first bubble of evil scenes in tSR, Mat stabbing cards (lol), Perring fighting his axe, and Berelain freaking out (she's stuck in the corner at this point with weaves of Air) as Rand kills images of himself. Really cool scenes. I especially like the end of Rand's fight with the images, where he sits there bleeding everywhere, and thinks something along the lines of: "Just wanted to sit there and remember a sheepherder named Rand al Thor"

When Mat and Birgette get hammered together is one of my all time favorite scenes.

Another is when Mat arrives in Salidar and doesn't know that Egwene is the Amyrlin.

+1 to that.

Also, I love when Rand faces his first trolloc (since being trained by Lan), panicks and freezes, and one of the Sheinarian soldiers tells him to step aside or run away or something. Very realistic. I hate stories where the hero picks up a sword, get's trained rather quickly, and then runs off facing and beating opponents who have been fighting for much longer.

Also, I love later in that book when he kills a bunch of trollocs in the dark of the mountains, while Lanfear and Loial are waiting back at camp. Think the chapter was called shadowkiller or something like that.

Birgitte to Elayne after she tried convincing Cerandin to come with them when they left Luca's show and she basicly blew her off....

'You claimed to be heir to a throne. If you're going to become Aes Sedai, you should learn to stretch the truth, not shatter it completely.' Leading to the first of Elayne's screams of frustration.

Nyneave seeing what her actions resulted in after asking both Masema and Galad to procure a ship for her. Trying not to watch Birgitte retrieve her arrows after 'each one of them found an eye'. (then Birgitte made a comment about her temper and immediately she thinks 'Come to think of it any Two Rivers man could have shot as well from that range. Any boy!')

Just an example of what RJ can do between a matter of pages. From among the most comical scenes you'll see to a horrific riot/war to Nyneave being Nyneave like she's always been. I forget how awesome the writing is in those chapters until I reread at some point and then I'm impressed all over again.

I really love the time Rand spends in Cairhien in tGH, when hes meets up with Thom again, is rejecting all the letters from nobles and then accidently blows up the Illuminators chapter house, lol. For me it's one of the great joys of rereading this series and a testament to the immense writing of Jordan as things that happen just because Rand is in Cairhien (and Ta'veren).

Because Rand meets up with Thom and various other things that happen, like going to Barthanes Manor and such Thom ends up assassinating King Galldrian and starting the civil war.

Also when Rand visits the Illuminators chapter house and ends up blowing it up this ends up sending Aludra down a path which now has her with Mat's Band and she has invented her Dragons which will be a BIG BIG help in the Last Battle.

Like I said it amazes me still when I notice these little gems.

Jordan is unbeatable when it comes to things like that!!

I love the scene in EotW when Rand and Mat are in some village and a guy comes up to the table and Mat Snarles Darkfriend at him. I can just imagine them in this unknown town alone and scared and pissed.

I love all the scenes where Mat is pissed at Rand for wearing fine clothing.

I also like Cadsuane spanking Semirhage that just craked me up.

Actually, Rand didn't exactly freeze when he saw the Trollocs in Shienar. He was shocked to see them inside and he reacted sloppily but there it is. What you're thinking of is when he encountered the Fade.. the same Fade that had just littered the hall with seven dead men who were raised from their mother's breast to face the Shadow.. and then you have Rand, a few months of his farm. It was Ingtar who stepped up to save Rand by the way. Rand was about to face the Fade when Ingtar showed up and told Rand to go practice on some Trollocs. Rand wanted to stay with Ingtar to take the Fade but Ingtar told him to go find Egwene instead.

But Rand did sort of pick up the sword in the beginning quite easily.. though he did practice with the thing pretty much non-stop, by book two he could take on a Blademaster and win. There are a few factors for that though.. first Lews Therin was a Blademaster who didn't just pick up a sword.. he rediscovered the entire sport with several others of his time, secondly Rand is a healthy and strong young man with the hardiness of the Aiel in his bones and the Oneness also helps a lot.

And as for when Rand was given the name Shadowkiller: Loial was with Rand at the time, carrying the Horn back. Rand was acting to defender the Ogier from the hunting Trollocs. Lanfear and Hurin were back at the camp though.
