Good Lord no!

"Star Trek" did it, "Spider-Man" is about to do it. Speaking at the UK premiere for "Invictus", actor Matt Damon said that instead of another sequel, Universal's lucrative 'Bourne' franchise may get a prequel/reboot revolving around a young Jason Bourne.

He tells Empire that "There’ll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one, just because I think we’re probably another five years away from doing it - we’ve got to get a script."

As previously reported, the series has hit major stumbling blocks of late with director Paul Greengrass having exited the project and a lot of talk of script problems. Despite Damon's comments, a prequel to the series followed by a sequel to 'Ultimatum' seems extremely unlikely.

Ultimately the studio will choose one or the other. The sequel is looking more and more uncertain due to many issues. The prequel/reboot would be ideal for the studio cost/control-wise but story wise is impractical as it would have to be set in the character's pre-Treadstone Green Beret days (i.e. before he became 'Jason Bourne').

The other concern is Damon as unlike say James Bond, which has had numerous actors, people associate Damon and Bourne as one and the same.

New News!

"Michael Clayton" and "Duplicity" writer/director Tony Gilroy has come onboard to direct a fourth installment in the Jason Bourne franchise at Universal Pictures reports Deadline.

Gilroy has worked on the scripts for all three previous installments of the franchises and was hired to write the script for the tentatively titled "The Bourne Legacy" back in June.

The move is interesting as Gilroy reportedly grew increasingly frustrated with the way his work on the franchise ended up on screen, certainly he wasn't a fan of filmmaker Paul Greengrass who directed the first two sequels.

It also puts in question whether star Matt Damon will return as the actor has indicated he wouldn't come back unless Greengrass directed again. Universal plans to continue the franchise though, with or without Damon.

Frank Marshall, Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith will produce. The film's production timetable is presently unknown.

Jeremy Renner is the new Bourne?

A favorite seems to have emerged from the shortlist of seven actors to have tested for the lead role in Universal Pictures' Jason Bourne spin-off "The Bourne Legacy".

That contender? "The Hurt Locker" star Jeremy Renner reports Latino Review.

The site says director Tony Gilroy wanted actor Oscar Isaac for the main character, but the studio apparently rejected his choice. Now it sounds like they've settled on Renner with an offer about to be sent out.

If he gets it, Renner would've beaten out the likes of Luke Evans, Joel Edgerton, Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund, Shia LaBeouf and Taylor Kitsch for the part.

Joan Allen and Albert Finney are in negotiations to reprise their characters for the upcoming "The Bourne Legacy" at Universal Pictures says The Hollywood Reporter.

Finney played Dr. Albert Hirsch, the man who ran Treadstone's behavior modification program, in "The Bourne Ultimatum". Allen played Pamela Landy, a CIA Deputy Director who hunted down Matt Damon's character in "The Bourne Supremacy" and later becomes something of an ally in 'Ultimatum'.

At the end of 'Ultimatum' Landy was seen testifying in front of the Senate about Operation Blackbriar which lead to the arrest of Hirsch. Both will continue their roles where they left off.

As previously reported, Damon is not involved in this chapter which now has Jeremy Renner starring as a new operative along with Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac and Edward Norton in other roles. Tony Gilroy penned the script and will direct.
