Golden Globes - Predictions

I took this from EW...

Best Motion Picture, Drama

Will win and should win: Up in the Air

Avatar has the momentum in the overall awards-season race, but with the most Globe nominations this year (six in all), the much more starry Up in the Air should steal it.

Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical

Will win: (500) Days of Summer

Should win: It's Complicated

With top comedy/musical nominee Nine fading from prominence every day, Globes voters may look elsewhere for the win. Meryl Streep voters could find themselves split between Julie & Julia and the outrageously funny It's Complicated, paving the way for a (500) Days victory.

Best Actor, Drama

Will win: George Clooney, Up in the Air

Should win: Colin Firth, A Single Man

In one of the year's closest races, all the love for Up in the Air stands to send Clooney over the top. Clooney and Crazy Heart's Jeff Bridges are both wonderful, but it's Firth who's truly transporting in Tom Ford's sumptuous drama.

Best Actress, Drama

Will and should win: Carey Mulligan, An Education

There's a chance The Blind Side's Sandra Bullock could upset, but the race is really between two poised newcomers: Carey Mulligan and Precious' Gabourey Sidibe. Give the British Mulligan the edge with the HFPA.

Best Actor, Comedy/Musical

Will win: Daniel Day-Lewis, Nine

Should win: Matt Damon, The Informant!

With no real frontrunner, it's anyone's trophy. If Nine has a shot at any of its five nominations, it's in this category. But my vote goes to Damon for his riotously funny, yet criminally unseen, turn as the world's worst whistle-blower.

Best Actress, Comedy

Will and should win: Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia

Streep's toughest competition? Herself, for It's Complicated. But she'll easily win for playing a real person so perfectly in Julie & Julia.

Best Supporting Actor

Will and should win: Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds

The supporting races are by far the easiest to call this year. And for good reason: Waltz's breakout performance as a multi-lingual SS colonel is one for the ages.

Best Supporting Actress

Will and should win: Mo'Nique, Precious

The Up in the Air ladies are lovely, and it's criminal that A Single Man costar Julianne Moore's mantel is empty. But Mo'Nique is simply in a league of her own this year.

Best Director

Will win: James Cameron, Avatar

Should win: Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association adores Avatar. Here's its easiest victory. Though Bigelow is to be commended with creating so much suspense with a much smaller budget.

Best Animated Film

Will and should win: Up

Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox would be a worthy winner in another year. But give Up the win based on those opening 10 minutes alone.
