While it would have been preferable for the Koreans to sort that issue out on their own, I personally wouldn't miss N Korea at all, and I doubt you will find many that will. Aside from how messed up that place is it is costing us quite a bit of manpower and money to maintain the DMZ.

The last news I heard was that, under extreme Chinese pressure, North Korea was going to return to the six-nation talks and was considering sending envoys to the USA for direct negotiations.

A war between North Korea and the USA is pretty much inconceivable due to the USA's tactical difficulties in destroying North Korea's artillery batteries before they level half of Seoul, not to mention North Korea's nuclear weapons capability, but at the same time the North has no prospect of ultimate victory in the face of superior American naval, air and ground forces. The North can seriously screw over the South and kill a lot of people, but it cannot win. If a war were to break out now on the Korean Peninsular, it would be the result of North Korean aggression and would probably last about two days before China stepped in and restrained them (by forcibly occupying the entire country, which to be frank would probably better than the situation we have at the moment, although you could forget about Korean reunification any time soon).

The situation in North Korea is a bit like Iran. You can go, "Hey, yeah, war!" and then look at the tactical problems faced by both sides and realise that it's almost a no-win scenario. In both cases, negotiation is the only practical way forward.

Fortunatly, the little bloke does not have as much power as people in the west US tend to believe, especially not when it comes to the military. If the generals thought he was up to something that would reduce the country to a pile of smoking ash, they would do something about it.

The Japanese would also have cause to worry. It isn't just RoK, which is likely to be targetted in a last ditch lash out. Best hope  would really be the PRC cracking the whip. If anyone has the capability to paralyse Kim Il Jong's nerve centres, the Chinese do.
