James Marsters, who spent seven years playing punk vampire Spike on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel,” has joined the cast of “Caprica,” EW’s Mike Ausiello reports exclusively.

According to Ausiello:

Marsters will play a dangerous terrorist leader by the name of Barnabus Greeley in a minimum of three episodes. Driven by desires both moralistic and carnal, Barnabus is as lethal as he is unpredictable.

The “Caprica” writers’ room is overseen by star “Buffy” writer-producer Jane Espenson.

Fresh from his role on Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse,” comedian-actor Patton Oswalt has been hired for a recurring role in “Caprica,” the “Battlestar Galatica” prequel spinoff series overseen by former star “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” writer-producer Jane Espenson.

Oswalt, a nerd and card-carrying Comedian of Comedy whose more prominent credits include nearly a decade on “The King of Queens” and voicing the lead rodent in “Ratatouille,” will on “Caprica” play Baxter Sarno, a popular Caprican comedian who invites Cylon inventor Daniel Greystone on his chat show.

Having found that repeatedly using a hot blonde woman on their posters worked well for BSG, SyFy have decided to controversially go for using a hot brunette on their posters for CAPRICA instead.

Which would be fine in a predictable-lowest-common-denominator sort of way, except for the fact that whilst actress Alessandra Torresani is 22, her character (Zoe Graystone) is only 16. And dead. Kind of. So it'll be interesting to see if that elicits much comment from people.

Despite that, the other approach of the publicity image, suggesting a parallel between Eve and Zoe, is actually quite thematically interesting given what happened in the pilot and what we know happens later in BSG.

I thought the pilot was great and will be tuning in for the series itself which debuts on 22 January.
