With July's theme of Michael Jackson ending in a damp squimb (blame my internet connection), we are moving into a different theme for August. And a big thanks to Direwolf Jon for picking "One Hit Wonders", for there will be some absolute crackers! And to make up for last week's no show, there will be a double whammy this week. All you need to do is decide whether the song I have chosen is a TUNE (i.e. you love it) or a NO TUNE (i.e. you hate it). Quite simple, really!

And to start proceedings, I have chosen a song that just about everyone will love...and should know! And I am quite surprised it was a "One Hit Wonder". We are heading back to 1974 and Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas.

The inspiration for the song has three sources - Douglas had seen a kung fu movie, later visited a jazz concert by Oscar Peterson, and was suffering from side-effects of pain killers (Douglas had injured his foot playing football).Another version gives his inspiration simply as seeing two kids in London doing kung fu moves.

What makes the song so recognisable is its distinctive rifts and lyrics, especially in the chorus. It has a great "feel good" aspect to the song. How anyone can't enjoy it, I don't know! It was also voted number 1 in the UK's Channel 4 "50 Greatest One Hit Wonders", and made number 100 in VH1's "100 Greatest one-hit wonders. As a result, I give Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas the vote of TUNE.

For those of you who haven't heard the song, here are some two links to YouTube.

The poll closes in a week's time, which is Monday 10th August 2009. So make sure you vote now before the time for the latest "Tune or No Tune" poll finishes!
