What happened to Merille and Talaan?

Recommended Posts

Talaan wanted to go to the Tower and become a novice.  The agreement said all the Sea Folk AS who were "sacrificed" to the tower could come back, but it didn't say anything about a windfinder apprentice going to the tower of her own free will.  Merille would have jumped on that loophole.

She did go willingly, hence loophole to exploit, she goes to the Tower without orders from her clan to keep quiet.  And she went of her own free will so she doesn't have to be released per the sacrifice clause.

They were scene leaving the city through one of the city gates.  And why would Careane kill them?  She only killed the one twin because she had to kill the BA prisoner.  She didn't kill any of the other AS with her, she even went charging in to stop the BA sisters in the city, where the other twin killed her.

That's because to not go would have aroused too much suspicion.  I think she tried to talk them out of it several times.

Just to make sure, the Merille we are talking about is she Merilille Ceandevin; and the Talaan we are talking about is she Talaan din Gelyn?

If so, they ran away (Crossroads of Twilight Chapter 14).

Is there another Merilille and Talaan that could be under discussion? I know the series is overflowing with characters called Merilille and Talaan, who disappear together, it could be any one of them.

Look closely, and you will see that there is only one person by each of those names. One Merilille, and one Talaan. So there is none other that he could be referring to.

Why would we discuss someone else?

Careane managed to get everyone to believe the Kinswomen ran away instead of getting killed, so why wouldn't she be able to do the same with Merilille and Talaan? I find it odd that they haven't shown up with the rebels yet (as far as we know) when Talaan probably can Travel. But then someone saw them leave the city didn't they?

Well, to be fair Careane's job was to get rid of the wilders so that Falion and Marillin could kidnap Elayne--the Windfinders are too strong willed, too untrusting of Aes Sedai and too strong in the Power for Careane to try scaring them away by killing their number as with the Kin, it would therefore be logical to attempt to cause political friction--say by having it appear one of there most talented apprentices, the kin of some of the most powerful Windfinders around, be kidnapped by an Aes Sedai. She could also have faked the report of them fleeing (like Semirhage faked Tuon extorting jewelry)...
