How much time are you going to give AMOL?

I read most of the WoT books in just a few days and as a result I missed many fine details that I could have picked up if I had been patient enough to lower my pace.

I fully intend to give AMOL at least 2 weeks. I hope to read one or two chapters per day.

How much time do you intend to give it? It is the last book after all. The longer I spend savouring it, the better its going to be.

What I would like to happen and what will happen are two completely different things.

What I would like to do is take my time with the book, I find myself skimming parts that start to drag (smoothing dresses, arched eyebrows and hair pulling).

What will happen is that I will speed through the book.  Kind of like the cookie monster.  Most of the cookie gets in his mouth, but a lot of crumbs fall along the way.

However, it is the crumbs that I miss that makes the second and third reads so special.

Tough question.  During the time building up to a new release, I always thought if I could keep it to one or so chapt a week, I could make until the next new release.  Of course, then anticipation would win out, I'd take time off from school or work and plow through as fast as possible.  Also, RJ started taking more than 1 year between releases as well.

I've always approached a new release as follows:

*  Do not jump / skip forward

*  Read every word, no skimming

*  Set no time limit; base it on comprehension <if I can't remember most   the details, I go back and re-read the chapt>

Even though it may seem slow to others, I get through a new release usually in about two weeks <with out blowing off work, lol>.

Then - I immediately go back and re-read to gather any missing details and to re trace the threads in the story / other books.

I'm gonna try to savor as long as possible, but I don't think that will happen once I get my hands on it.

I say now I will try to read slowly..heh, knowing me I'll read it in a day or two!! :o ;D

Yeah, same here.  I don't think I could make myself read slowly the first time through.  The first time, I'd blast through it and to hell with sleep and such.  Then I'd read through it at a much slower pace to absorb it.  One of the nice things about rereads is that you can figure out all the clues and hints along the way.  Sometimes I pick up on those on my first readthrough, sometimes I inaccurately predict the ending, and sometimes I fail to notice the clues.

I do the exact same thing, but I’m going to try to keep it slow for this book. I just finished Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series, and I skimmed through the whole last book....of course, his don’t contain near as much detail as WoT

sometimes I fail to notice the clues.

I think it was like my 4th re-read of The Great Hunt before I noticed the Seanchan taking the wonder girls was Suroth!  ::) I'm usually better than that :P

I personaly plan on buying both the Audio book (cd set) as well as the hard back edition. I'll go through it first on the audio listening to it while I'm at work. The hard back will sit on the shelf where it will be my reference guide. As for AMOL I fully intend to listen to it 4 or 5 times in a row so I pick up every detail before I move on to something else. Twilight I think I haven't read/listened to any of those yet. Or perhaps I'll grab some Forgotten Realms novels till I find something else to obsess over for a couple more years.

Though there is always my main obsession. (click the siggy pic for that and no it's not porn)

I will read through it fast, and then I'll immediately do another read through, taking my time. I don't really feel the need to savor it, since I'll own the whole series, and can 'savor' it forever. :)

I plan to re-read the series the month before its release to refresh my memory. I will then read AMOL 2 or 3 times the first week I have it. I have done that the last couple of books. I do not usually miss much, but I am paranoid that I did. So I will read it again and then one more time to be sure. I will porbly spend more time on AMOL.

A couple days to a week as always. I read the entire thing. I can't stand skimming or skipping if I am reading for enjoyment. I do tend to not put new books down though, so I'll just get less sleep if needed.

I never could get how someone would skip or skim through a book. I am to scared i would miss something good.

It takes as long as it takes, I go at a relatively slow pace myself though so I normally dont miss too much. Im guna be reading between the lines a hell of a lot more in AMoL though.

The annoying thing is, we know for definite that not every single major thread will be tied up at the end. RJ said once that he thought it unrealistic when a series ends and there are no problems in the world, and while I understand his way of thinking I still wish all the major threads would be finished just because if they were then every single page of AMoL-even as big as it will be-could be brilliant.

I have a feeling that Fain will survive the Last Battle

man i could agree more i reread books compulsively, well the ones that have deep character development or a detailed plot, and finding a new crumb every time makes the book last forever

Hm, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read somewhere RJ had said all the major plot-lines would be tied up, but that if any were to be left hanging it would be the smaller plot-lines.

Damn, he's on to me. >:D

Hybrid, stop giving away secrets  ;)

Oh, and I LOVE your Einstein quote

Most of the major ones will be tied up, but I think RJ intended for there to be some major plot lines left...many of the prophecies we have referring to after the Last Battle are anything but peaceful

The moment I’m looking forward to the most is not a major plot, but I just can’t wait to see Berelain’s reaction to Galad >:D
