Intro to Saidar Lesson 3: Control

Jasmyne sighed as she sank into her chair. Appearantly, Larindhra was impressed with her progress since "The Incident" that she was going to entrust the teaching of controlling saidar to novices. he scratched her dark stubble as she recalled her class on control. It was a wonderful day! It was then she had discovered that if all went well, she would have more control weaving Earth than almost every Aes Sedai. This was discovered by her accidentally making the floor under the novice beside her turn into a pitfall and she ended up in the classroom below them. She had gotten strapped for that, but it was amazing. Unfortunately, that day she also discovered that her skill with Water was virtually nothing, but she wasn't going to think about that.

The girls she was teaching filled into the classroom and lo and behold, Selene was one of them. She wasn't sure if that was a blessing or a curse. The girl was so sweet and genuine and she made Jasmyne feel so good, but she asked more questions than any dozen Inquisitors and she always wanted to learn too fast. But so far, Selene was the only girl she knew. She stood up, took a deep breath and began.

"Good morning girls. I am Jasmyne and I will be teaching you the basics of controlling saidar. 'Why?' you may ask. The answer is simple. If you are not in control of saidar, you will die!" She grinned inside as the young minds took that in. Several had eyes like dinner plates, others looked like they might throw up or faint, while others looked incredibly confused. So this was a taste of power. "If you cannot control saidar to do what you want it to do, your weaves can snap at you or someone else with potentially fatal results. If you weave incorrectly, it may blow up in your face. if you draw on saidar too much, you may burn yourself out, which is worse than dying. You know that feeling of euphoria when you are holding the Source? When you're burned out, you can never touch it again, but you constantly have a reminder of it." The girls still looked frightened. It was amusing.

She walked her little body down a row as she continued. It was certainly hard to keep someone's attention or respect when you came just above their naval. "So today we are going to practice two things. Pushing and pulling. First is pulling. I need all of you to embrace the Source." She watched as one by one, the girls all developed a small glow around them. "Good, now picture a cloud. A cute little white cloud drifting along in your sky. I want you to imagine your cloud drifting over the sun and hiding your light. Push away the warmth and joy it brings. Push so that you barely have any grasp at all." The glows faded to almost nothing and Jasmyne nodded. "I want you to try that a couple more times, then we can take a break before moving on.

Selene was very pleased to see that her instructor for this class would be the delightful Accepted she had met in the Infirmary.  Perhaps here, in a more formal setting, Jasmyne would be willing to teach Selene more of the One Power than the pitiful amount she'd been allowed to so far.  She hadn't yet resorted to practicing with Saidar on her own, the studies of women who had been stilled was enough to dampen her ardor at least that much, but she was very close.  As she took her seat, she smiled brightly to Jasmyne Accepted and lifted her hand in a tiny little shy wave.

Control?  At least with practicing control she would be able to practice with Saidar!  Selene should have been more nervous about handling the one power after her little mishap in her last class, Larindhra Sedai said if she hadn't shielded Selene that the girl might have burnt herself out on her very first touch.  But now that she knew about Saidar and how wonderful it felt, she would know what to watch for.  After all, you can't learn if you can't practice!

Selene nodded and listened intently as Jasmyne described the pushing and pulling.  That seemed like an excellent step towards gaining control over Saidar and if she could master this task quickly enough, perhaps she could as Melianna or Jasmyne to help her learn some actual weaves.  More than anything, that sounded like a lot of fun, and Selene was eager to learn to help people.  Selene closed her eyes and pictured the rose, it sprang to life and was in full blossom almost immediately and at a hissed word from Jasmyne, Selene remembered that she was supposed to be pushing and pulling today.  She imagined the feeling of a partly cloudy day, the cooling shade that a cloud would provide as it drifted across the sun.  She concentrated, letting the warmth of the sun ebb and feeling the joyful light of Saidar lessen until it was barely a trickle.  She felt, rather than 'saw' the cloud, she imagined it as a place of light and shadow across the rose, and she let the cloud drift to one side, exposing the rose to the light.  She pulled and Saidar leaped into her eagerly.  She pushed again, shading the rose.  She was concentrating deeply, determined to get this right.

It took her a little time to get the pull to happen in increments, rather than a great rush, but her sheer force of will was what got her there.  She tried to imagine what it would feel like if the light of Saidar was seen as though through fog - watery and weak, and she felt the force trickle and give her only a little.  As the light warmed the fog and it fell from the air, she was finally able to master pulling with a gentle force.  She was smiling most of the time she worked at Jasmyne's task and when she finally managed this by imagining fog, it was a bring grin the lit her face as she opened her eyes and turned them to the tiny woman.  She didn't speak, she didn't want to risk interrupting the other girls, but the pride and joy were written so clearly on her face that she didn't have to.

Sarena was still on a high after the slumber party at Selene's room and then the freeday just the next day, she had spent most of the day sitting out in the gardens going over her lesson notes and writing letters to her parents informing them she had arrived safely. But now it was back to classes and chores, Sarena enjoyed the classes as she roughly knew what to expect but that didnt let her get complacent in her studies. She had promised both the Mistress of Novices and her mentor that she would work extra hard on her control of Saidar. Even though she knew how to divide the weaves into the different elements and keep control of them, she made herself go back and restudy the basics of each lesson in case there was something she had missed the first time.

Walking into the classroom she saw Selene and Merindhra the only two novices she felt particularly close to. She chose her seat and looked up expectantly for the Aes Sedai who would be guiding them but instead there was an Accepted there waiting to begin. Serena had never met her before but she had a friendly demenor about her which made Sarena a little more relaxed about the class.

The Accepted introduced herself as Jasmyne, then began telling them about the neccessity of controlling Saidar. Even though Sarena knew these things it didnt stop her grimacing in horror as Jasmyne Accepted described the consequences of not mastering control.

She then informed them that they would be learning pushing and pulling of saidar. Asking them then to embrace saider, Sarena opened herself to the warm sun that was the source. Jasmyne then told them to imagine clouds moving across the sun, forming the picture firmly in her mind she let the glow fade to just a faint glimmer then very slowly she she made the sun reappear, much to her surprise she noticed that saidar became a bit stronger. Concerntrating hard she made the clouds come back again until only a faint glow remained.

Suddenly feeling quite tired she released saidar completly and slumped down in her chair, she could feel the sweat running down her face but she didnt care let them see that she was exausted she hadnt worked with the One Power so hard since she did this class the first time. Back then though she had trouble pushing saidar away. Finally opening her eyes she saw that the Accepted was standing over her with a half worried look in her eyes. Sarena wiped the sweat away and gave the Accepted a tired smile.

Carina sat next to Selene and listened to the Accepted talk. She carefully stored away the warnings about losing controle when channeling and felt herself quite worried about the potential of losing that sweetness that was now such a natural part of her life. It gave her pauze for a moment. When did I accept this as part of me? Where is my wish to be a ranger? She wondered briefly. Jasmyne's voice increased as she passed Carina on her walk through the row and the novice snapped back to attention. Hearing the instructions from the Accepted, Carina opened herself to the Source, the meadow she used instead of the single rose, instantly blooming with forest wildflowers. Countless hours of practicing had not gone to waste. She could now open herself to Saidar in the blink of an eye and almost without thought. Doing something with it though, still took quite a bit of concentration and effort. Sometimes Carina wondered if she would ever master it.

Sun covered by a clowd? She mused, wondering how that's going to affect her meadow. Then it dawned on her and she envisioned before her mind's eye a rolling fog spreading over the field of wildflowers. Blocking them from the sun above as clearly as any clowd would have. Push, she thought, and she pushed the fog blanket over the field with her mind. In doing so she felt the strength of Saidar lestening inside her. It's warmth and vibrating energy weakening. Panick almost made her gasp, but she remembered Jasmyne's words and then started to pull the fog blanket back. As if rolling it up on a roller in her hands, freeing the field to the warmth of the sun again. In her fear of losing Saidar she pulled too hard, too fast and was cut from the Source like a snapping string. The force of it launched her straight from her chair and onto the floor. Selene never blinked, so emerged was she in her own exercise that she hadn't even noticed.

Not a little embarrassed, Carina quickly scrambled into her chair again, her cheeks a bright red and closed her eyes, performing the calming breathing exercises she had learned from the rangers in Malkier. Instantly she took controle over herself again and set out to try once more. This time, she didn't rush anything and after several tries the pulling and pushing technique came smoothly to her. She still hated it when she was pushing, as it diminished her world so much, but fear was not part of it now as she realised that the controle was hers and the loss a choice, not a sentence.

Finally she let go of the Source all together and sat exhausted back in her chair. If this is basic controle, she thought, then I have a huge long way yet to go if I'm ever to become an Aes Sedai.

Jasmyne watched the girls practice pushing away. Selene struggled a bit, but she beamed with joy once she did get it. Sarena also had trouble with the exercise, but she got it to. She worried over her. She had heard that she had taken the class before and not done so well. Suddenly Carina flew off her seat and the glow wasn't around her at all. Great Lord, please don't let her have burnt herself out. Larindhra would have her hide if that happened. Jasmyne rushed over, but the novice had already picked herself up and had embraced the Source. She sighed heavily. She didn't burn out. For that she was thankful. And then she got it. Maybe teaching wasn't so abhorrently awful.

"Well, I would have given you a break before teaching you how to Pull saidar, but it seems you all have got that part figured out. Well done all of you. Take a few minutes to rest up, then practice a couple times." The girls started to chatter and then the glow popped up around a few of them and it ebbed and flowed as a river would. They were slowly getting the hang of it. She had to give them that. "Alright girls, that's enough for today. You're dismissed."

OOC: If you want to post again to chatter or practice, you are welcome to. If not, then you are done this class section. ;D
