Anyone Have a Kindle from Amazon?

Recommended Posts

So I've been reading a lot of reviews about the Kindle from Amazon, and while the price point is a bit high at $360 US bucks, everything I've seen about it makes me salivate.  This is close to the second coming of Christ for me I think.  I wanted to know if anyone has one of these, and if so, are all the positive reviews really true:

It's one of those things that I REALLY REALLY want to put on my Xmas list, but I don't want my partner to go out and spend the money on it, and then have it be disappointing in the long run.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It looks extremely nice, but I'm not sure I'd want one, as I like the feel of a book in my hands.

I'm with you on that...I would want this specifically for lightness of carrying a book or multiple books with me on the move.  At home, I would continue to buy books like I always have I think.  I find them pretty comforting.

Those E-book readers have been around a long time in one form or another.  They all fail.

So in about 6 months you could get one on ebay for, like, $5, but then why would you want one.

I'm for this concept 100%

It seems to have been realized very poorly and it seems that the price doesn't reflect how poorly it's been accomplished.

I say wait for them to get that perfect update... it doesn't need to be one with a lot of features but it needs to turn pages quickly and you need to be able to navigate through it quickly.

In the next couple of years they'll get the right hardware in it and get the ergonomics down and it'll be another couple hundred bucks cheaper... and with any luck the books will be more realistically priced.  Wait it out.

I have a Kindle.  My wife surprised me with one on my birthday a couple weeks ago.

My wife got me it because she was getting tired of the boxes of books in our bedroom.

Its light and many times while reading it I will forget its a e book and reach up to the top right corner to flip the page.

I like the built in Dictionary and the ability to connect to Wiki for free.  Thanks to Tors free book give away I already had a few book when my wife gave it to me.

One thing I dislike is that many of the book I would like to read on it I am having a hard time finding  Wheel of time series(though I did find a file of 1-10 on the Bay).  If Tor would sell E books of all there book I would be broke.  I have gone though half there free book in the last 3 weeks now.

If you don't connect to the internet your battery will last about a week and that is with quite of bit of reading.  If you surf the web a lot then it will only last two maybe three days.

I showed it to my boss and he though it was pretty cool...until I showed him I could surf porn at work(though in grey scale) if I wanted it.

Haack - Thanks for the input!  I was hoping at least 1 person on here would have one and be able to give me a real experience with it.  Much appreciated.

I know I'm jumping into this discussion a little delayed, but I was about to start a thread about the Kindle before I decided to do a search.

I've owned a Kindle since the begining of June, and I love it. Just like haack909 said, you really do forget that it's not an actual book. Especially if you use the cover, then you have something to hold like you would a normal book.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to use the wireless capabilities since I'm stationed overseas. But being overseas is also exactly why I got it. Being able to carry all of my books with me from country to country, as I change duty stations, is great.

It has been a pain in some senses, seeing as how they really don't have my favorite author's for it yet. But at the same, it's made me read new one's and my "favorite authors list" has grown quite a bit over the last 3 and half months.

But anyway, I can't say enough about the Kindle. When I first started reading on it, I really did miss the actual book, but after about 2 hours I got used to it. I've read 10-11 books on it (all between 600-900 pages) in the last 3 months, now, and it's been great. Really helps me get through my night shifts and my days off when I don't have anything else to do!

As for the lack of WoT for the Kindle. I think we can remedy this, if everyone goes to Amazon and searches for the WoT books, there is a link in the book profiles that said "I'd like to read this on Kindle" and perhaps the more requests we put up, the faster they'll put them out!

Another reason for getting a Kindle.

I preordered The Hero of Ages: Book Three of Mistborn on Amazon a few months ago and I just went online to check when it would be delivered October 17-20.  It has a release date of October 14.

I clicked on the books link and noticed a link at the top of the page "The Hero of Ages: Book Three of Mistborn  and over 180,000 other books are available for Amazon Kindle".  Now I get it right on October 14 and for quite a bit cheaper $9.99 instead of $18.45 plus shipping.

Don't quit your dayjob Prophet! LOL

Why the heck aren't  the WoT books available on the Kindle yet?  This thing is huge now.  I own all the WoT in hardback but would gladly buy the Kindle editions to reread on my Kindle if they were available.  They are refusing more of my money.  What is wrong with them?!

They'll probably eventually put them out. It takes time to negotiate things like e-rights. Those are separate from the hard copy. That's why the e-prologues always came out through Simon & Schuster and not Tor. Simon & Schuster approached Jordan first about electronic rights.

Anyways, if you're very interested in getting WoT or any of Tor's back catalog sold as e-Books, you can always contact them and let them know you're interested. I know they pay attention to reader requests like that. http://us.macmillan.com/Content.aspx?publisher=torforge&id=261

Thanks KT.  I'll be sure to email them.

Yes, I was wrong.  I'm still not going to buy one until the price of there books go down. (the price of a kindle book and mass market hardcover are the same. :o )
