Rand Channelling or Taveren Effect?

Recommended Posts

It is well known that one of the first (if not the first) time Rand Channels happens during the flight from the Two Rivers and he heals Bela, so she can keep pace with the rest of the horses (which makes me wonder why Rand didn't feel the sickness from touching the source that he feels later in the journey, or is that sickness related?).

In Baerlon, he is confronted by the Whitecloaks after laughing at them after one of Mat's pranks.  In his POV he is talking to the Whitecloaks, but can't believe what he is saying, like someone else is speaking for him, standing up to the Whitecloaks, almost instigating a fight, until the Watch comes along.  Rand holding the Power or Taveren Effect?

After the flight from Shadar Logoth, Rand, Mat and Thom jump aboard the Spray.  A Trolloc jumps to the rail behind Rand and is about to bash him when Rand screams, "NO!" and suddenly the boat lurches and a boom swings across the deck, knocking the Trolloc off the rail.  Rand Channelling or Taveren Effect?

In Baerlon, this is the sickness effect from his first time touching the source.  The boom swinging is his second channeling effort.  Later he finds himself sitting atop the mast and slides down a rope (I forget the nautical term for it).  That's his reaction to the second touching.  The reations come closer and closer to the actual touching until he has no more (or for some sparkers death occurs).

That time - when Rand used OP to blast their way out of the inn in the Four Kings - was the last time when he had a reaction (three days later, when Mili Skane almost killed them), the 'OP-newbie' sickness. Next time he used OP was at the Eye, I think, and after that he had the usual, normal  taint sickness only.

No, he did experience the reaction at the Eye--in the form of forgetfulness, dizziness, emotional distance etc. This occured directly after his touching the Source, and thus ended the aquisition period--much as it does for anyone.

I think the second time was after the encounter in the Inn earlier in TEOTW, as described by Rasta Asha'man. The reaction at the Eye was from channeling the incredible amount of saiden that was in that pool, and from the encounter with Ishamael, yes?

Ok, for clarity the way this works is when you first start channeling you have bad reactions. Eaching touching of the Source causes a reaction, and that reaction gets closer and closer to the moment you touch the source. The first time it is between seven and ten days for the reaction, until the final time, usually around the 4th or 5th touching, when the touching and the reaction occur instantaneously. At that moment you've either gained control, or you havn't. If you havn't you get progressively sick until you die, and nothing can be done about it.

Rand's sequence of Touchings and Reactions go like this.

1st Touching - Healing Bela of tiredness.

1st Reaction - Overconfidence with the Whitecloaks.

Time - Seven Days.

2nd Touching - Making the boom on Domon's boat swing to kill the Trolloc after Shadar Logoth.

2nd Reaction - Acrobatics on Domon's boat using the mast.

Time - four days.

3rd Touching - Calling lightning to blow open the window in the Four Kings.

3rd Reaction - Getting sick at Market Sheran.

Time - Two days.

4th Touching - Drawing on the Eye, fighting Ishamael. Possibly actually calling the Eye when fleeing the Worm Pack (re: description of light and pain and desperation).

4th Reaction - Forgetfulness, dizziness, emotional distance.

Time - Instantaneous.

So in answer, no, the touching at the inn was the third touching, not the second, and nor was it the last, and the forgetfulness and all that resulted from simple power aquisition, not Ishamael.

You're right, indeed he did - I just didn't consider it as the newbie sickness; after all, Rand didn't go total kaputt after taking that whole well in at the Eye, like he did when he blasted that wall with just a single bolt of lightning. Instead, he had just a small hangover - after getting rid of Aginor and cutting Ba'alzamons' cord.
