No w this is just driving me up the wall - it makes no sense!

I was re-reading KoD Egwene's chapters and we see her walking from class to class or AS to AS  or to the Cafateria or When she leaves her first class when Katerine sends her again to the Mistress of Novices for dis-obeying the instructor and she clearly DOES NOT HAVE AN ESCORT / guards.

This just does not make sense to me!    The WT is BIG and has MANY, MANY hiding places and many servents corridors so why does she not just find a good place to hide until the Forkroot wore off.  Then she could "Travel" back to the Rebal camp.

Sure many times she had escorts - but several times like this she did not.

Is this an RJ error?    Has it been discussed before?    I could not find it.

Sure, I know why Egwene does not do it - she is planning to break Elida from within, but that does not explain why she was given the opportunity.

It just does not make sense to me.

Just because she does not constantly have a Red sister glued to her back it does not mean they are not more discretly keeping an eye on her, just in case she would get the idea to stroll off.

I am sure they keep an eye on her even if they aren't escorting her about.

Also I believe Egwene feels she has something important to accomplish inside the white tower before she leaves. She wants to be an example and influence the others so they can look up to her and respect her when she at last takes control of the tower.

Also, i wouldn't put it past some of the Aes Sedai to just be careless with her. after all, she's a novice to them. She'll report to the MoN because she was told to. Why should they expect differently?

I think Dragon21 hit it right on the head.  If she really wanted to escape, I feel pretty sure she could have by now.  But she not only hasn't tried, she specifically forbade anyone from trying to rescue her.  There are several reasons.

1) What Dragon21 said: she is conducting part of the war ... in some ways the most important part ... right where she is, in a way that she never could from outside the Tower.

2) She doesn't want to risk Sisters shedding Sisters' blood again, if she doesn't have to.

and, the one she is smart enough to be thinking but won't ever actually say to anyone ...

3) If she doesn't come out of this something to show for it, her position with the Hall (either Hall) will be totally shot.  She'll be the "child Amyrlin who let herself get caught and had to be rescued".  On the other hand, if she emerges from this with a victory of her own making, she'll look like a genius.

Your points are all correct, Robert, but I think you misunderstood the question.

It just does not make sense to me.

There are 3 possible answers, as far as I can see:

1) RJ just doesn't mention the watchers all the time.

2) They are quietly observing her (as Majsju and Dragon have said).

3) They are complacent (as Kathana said). (aside: Kath! really  :o AS are all seeing! Especially Momsy  ;D)

LOL ... indeed I did.

The answer is, Aes Sedai are stupid, and the worst stayed in the Tower.

OK ... maybe that was a teeny bit harsh ...

But Elaida has failed to impress, throughly, and she clearly views Egwene as merely a novice.  I guess they could be watching her surreptitiously, but I'm leaning towards Kat's complacency answer.

Aes Sedai are NOT stupid!! We're ... I mean they are just ... misunderstood  ::)

*makes funny faces at RAW*  :P

But yes, I'm leaning towards Kathana's answer too, especially if they are only following orders from Elaida, who (bless her little cotton socks) is NOT the sharpest knife in the drawer  :(

They might be deliberately not keeping a close watch - there seem to be more and more of them who are less than enamoured with Elaida.  It might be a case of: in your face, cow!

When push comes to shove I think all but the most fanatical sisters (Reds included) will turn to Egwene and toss Elida to the wolfs. Especialy when they learn she was manulipated like a puppet and all but handed the tower to the Black Ajah and the Dark One.

Maybe they wove a "finder" on her like Elayne did to Hark when he was following D. Hanlon?? No need to have her watched then.... (no, Im not being serious  ;D)

Actually, i think you're all forgetting that she is dosed with forkroot several times daily.  It's enough that she can embrace the source, but she cannot actually channel to any real effect.  That prevents her from channeling to try to escape, should she decide to try.

Since she is, in the eyes of the Tower, a novice, she can't leave the tower grounds, which are heavily guarded.

All this is to the good since it gives her run of the Tower to work on her plans.

There are currently barely 200 Sisters, and the proportional numbers of servants, support personnel, etc, in the Tower.  That means the Tower is at less than one tenth capacity.  wvlr's initial post wondered why she was given the opportunity described here:

"The WT is BIG and has MANY, MANY hiding places and many servents corridors so why does she not just find a good place to hide until the Forkroot wore off."

With the Tower more than 9/10 empty, she could certainly find a place to hide for 10-12 hours, and since she is not even fully dosed to start with, that would be more than enough time for her recover enough ability to escape.  And she has been left (at least apparently) without escort several times.

Elaida probably assumes that she lacks the initiative and ingenuity to do it.  Whereas the truth is that she doesn't want to escape quite yet.  But she almost certainly could have, unless they are watching her clandestinely ...

Not sure if anyone has said what I am about to say, but if I do consider it a compliment ;D

1) They think she is liable to 'break' at any minute. They think her a simple runaway novice, who with some stern discipline will become butter in their hands for them to reshape as they want, and uttery loyal besides. I'm not sure that any one of them knows or will acknowledge to themselves the kind of person Egwene is now.

2) They may not be following right on Egwene's ankles, yet at several points there have been sisters or at least accepted who were 'supervising' Egwene or just in the area anyways. Considering Egwene's schedule of class and constant trips to the MoN, as well as the fact that, I believe, once an hour a sister is sent to Egwene so she can take her mild forkroot drink, and you have a situation setup whereby it is almost guaranteed that ONE sister will be in relatively close proximity of Egwene at any given time. And if Egwene does manage to slip through a crack...? Well I am sure that they would be very confident in using Egwene's ability to channel to find her in a second. They have an army of servants and (they think) accepted and novices besides to help make a quick sweep through the tower to find her.

I  agree with  you ,  Aes Sedai  for the most part are  creatures of  habit  they  see egwene  as a  novice  tied to the tower  now not as a  rebel amyrilan  seat  they  expect people to  fall into  the  respective roles without much of a fuss after  they  think they have  broken them to the tower.

Being dosed so often with forkroot is going to work against them in the end. Egwene is gonna build up a resistance to it and when she has a high enough tolerance, she is gonna suprise the hell out of everyone.

That is an excellent point Darth Andrea!  I did not think of that, but I can see that happening.  It won't have the same effect on her over time as it does in the very beginning.

I will also point out that from what I recall, the WT as a whole is unaware of Traveling and Masking, so even if she got away, they'd have every expectation of being able to find her.

Personally, I am of the belief that she's always being watched, if not fully escorted, much like there always "happen to be" a few Warders watching Mat and his entourage when he first comes to Salidar.

They are aware of her ability of masking and traveling, as they have repeatedly asked her and Leane to show them the weaves.

Oops. Sorry about that. It's been awhile since I re-read KoD. Currently on Crown of Swords again right now. Thanks for the clarification!

That Egwene brought an entire army from out of nowhere should have made even the most sceptical sisters realise that she, or someone woth her had rediscovered Traveling.

*nods*

and if they didn't think that she was the one who discovered it, they might assume that she at least knew the weave.

Lol, never thought of that before.  At least I don't think I have...it's been so long since I've read.  Surprise the hell out of them...hehehe nice.

Personally, I think she likes the beatings. It's a fetish, she's turned into a masochist and can't go more than a few hours without a little paddle action.

Someone needs to write some erotic fanfic about this. ;)

It's entirely possible that her 'opportunities' weren't accidental. Maybe they intentionally let her get these chances under the hope that she would try and escape and reveal the travelling weave.

Wouldn't that require them to stop giving her that draught of forkroot?
