Jak o’ Shadow - Take III

An Analysis of Jak O' the Shadows 

By Mushuganna, Lieutenant-Captain of the Infantry

 

One might think that writing a verse of the famed Jak o' the Shadows would be easy. Just think of a few words that rhyme, put them together, and there you go. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Finally, after hundreds of verses (most of them really good) have been written by our own Band members, the true art of writing a JOS verse is being revealed. 

 

First, one must look at the original Jak O' the Shadows verses written by Robert Jordan himself, in Lord of Chaos. As sung by the Band of the Red Hand, one of the verses goes as follows: 

 

"We'll drink the wine till the cup is dry,

And kiss the girls so they'll not cry, 

And toss the dice until we fly 

To dance with Jak o' the Shadows." 

 

Now, you can see, the first three lines have 8 syllables each (except the first, but the "the" after "till" is not meant to be accented, so it counts as 8 anyways). Also, they rhyme. So it looks like the verse follows the form "A, A, A, B", with the first three lines having 8 syllables each, and the last line ending in "Jak O' the Shadows". Now let us look at another verse:

 

"We'll dance all night while the moon runs free, 

And dandle the lasses upon our knee,

And then you'll ride along with me, 

To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

 

Now, the syllabic interpretation gets a little confusing. The first line has 9 syllables, and the second 10, and the third 8. But, when put into a Iambic rhythm, it makes perfect sense:

 

"We'll dance all night while the moon runs free

And dandle the lasses upon our knee" etc.

 

So, the Jak O' the Shadows verses are written in "A, A, A, B" form, with the first three lines being in Iambic Tetrameter (four sets of alternating unstressed then stressed syllables), and the last line being "To _____ with Jak O' the Shadows" (the blank being an accented word). This last line can be changed according to the circumstances, as long as it fits into the meter. 

 

Basically, if you can sing it, (easily), then you're ok.

And reading their JoTs is a treat 

But my lyrical skill cant be beat

To become Jak O' Shadows

Cause im a cleaver ole Bander

I think its time to see the world 

Tear is quite lovely Ive heard

Open a Gateway with just a word 

To channel with Jak O' The Shadows.

I know a guy who thinks he's cool

That hes smarter then all us fools

And he thinks he makes all the rules 

To be delusional with Jak 'O the Shadows 

 

Dice hails from the land of Aussie

And comes across as quite bossy

A dingo crew is his posse

To be down under with Jak 'O the Shadows

 

To be fair hes not a bad guy

Slightly old but still a bit sly

This silly Spotfine made me sigh

To be free again with Jak 'O the Shadows

It's been a long time since I've been here

But back I come, to friends so dear,

I'll bring the grog, so never you fear -

Let's drink with Jak o' the Shadows!

 

So many members there do be,

Besides myself, there's thirty-three!

Some kindred souls I'm glad to see,

Let's dance with Jak o' the Shadows!

 

I miss the times we had of old,

With banter and laughter and hearts of gold,

And jousts with Dice, who ne'er will fold (@dicetosser1),

We grin at Jak o' the Shadows!

Is still MG, as fair and right -

He'll lead us true right through the night,

Straight past ol' Jak o' the Shadows!

 

@Jeannaisais's name, it made me blink

Cos she's been gone beyond a wink,

But since she's here, let's grab a drink

We'll cheer 'spite Jak o' the Shadows!

Oh look, it's back and working now

I swear, it broke, I don't know how

But @Nynaeve 's still here, all spunk and sass,

A witty and funny and caring lass

She really makes a happy Cass

Runs rings round Jak o' the Shadows

 

And then there's @Soohbear, bright as can be,

With Pizza and Snuppa both up a tree

And biscuits she baked, so darn yum-mee!

We'll roast ol' Jak o' the Shadows

He'll laugh like mad and set the spin,

She's honest and good and true as can be

She unleashes her thoughts and lets them roam free

Her spirit of fire you ne'er will tame

One I remember deserves some acclaim

Though I can't be sure why? (-my memory's to blame)

Then life was changed with a major crash,

cause in came Lava on Rainbow Dash,

glitter dancing up in the air,

Fair little miss Lava is surely a bonnie,

And that is why Dicey fell of his "ponnie",

Bandy is flying everywhere,

to spill with Jak O' the shadows

 

Now Dice's smile is turned upside down,

yelling spotfine at lava with major frown,

Lava think it is all unfair,

to pout with Jak O'the shadows

 

The last drink was clearly a flaming shot,

all over poor horsies tush spilled it got,

Bunyan's farting rainbows now,

to paint with Jak O' the shadows 

 

Now maybe his hair turns a little bit gray, 

but life without Lava, what can I say?

Unicorns are a'lots of fun,

to party with Jak O' the shadows
