Ooc: Continued from Old Trees and New Roots

The grove was as clear as it had been only the wekk before. Cairma worked Fior diligently within the grove and had given him various tasks throughout the week while holding onto the Void and learning to distiguish what he could hear and see. He was a quick stufy, but his senses lacked a certain amount of discipline, to which was of no surprise to Cairma. Fior had had an easy life until reaching the Tower and had not the need to disciple himself the way she or some others had.

Pulling out the two sheathed Lathes she brought with her, she passed one to Fior. "Today you will be learning Sword forms. For the next while i will be teaching you the basics, and then we will introduce them to you through the void. Again, in a few weeks the void will become more natural, and hopefully the forms will be as well as we learn them side-by-side."

"Leapord in a Tree is a preliminary form, begun with both hands on the hilt of the sword, knees bent, and leaning forward in a ready position. This form is used to prepare for Unfolding the Fan or another such drawing technique." She showed him the form, motioning for him to follow. "This is a good starting position when either starting your forms as it gives you your basic stance and balance. Rememer to watch your Shoulders and feet as they should be equal distances apart."

"Unfolding the Fan can be used as an opener, since this form can unsheathe the sword and stroke at the same time. Can also be used if caught off guard or in an awkward position." Unsheathing the sword she held it out in a basic guard stance. "And this is Lion on the Hill, a guard stance with the sword held at shoulder height ready to battle."

She checked to make sure that he was following, of which there was little doubt, and then she continued, "From here is Arc of the Moon. A simple slash, meant to take off an opponent’s head. This begins at midbody level, arcs to neck, and ends back at guard stance. And then from there we move into Folding the Fan. Folding the Fan is the exact opposite of Unfolding the Fan and is a sword sheathing technique. The blade is smoothly swung around from guard stance and sheathed, all in one motion. Understood? Now, do this a few times til you feel comfortable with it, than try them with the Void."

As Cairma began to explain the forms to him, Fior simply listened. He had some small experience with the most basic of forms back home, though he had not made it very far. Still, she was his mentor, and he would not enter into this training with thoughts of already knowing what she was trying to show him.

Bending his knees into the stance that was beginning to become familiar to him, he gripped his lathe, and followed her simply through the motions of Leopard in a Tree andUnfolding the Fan. After double checking to make certain his body was square and his feet firmly planted and spaced properly, he followed her into Lion on the Hill and tried to center his mind and body into his motions.

After this point was where he still had a great deal of trouble. It took him more focus than he cared to admit to move smoothly through Arc of the Moon and back into Lion on the Hill before resheathing his sword with a rough Folding the Fan.

He continued to move slowly through them, until he felt he had warmed himself adequately and stopped for a moment with the lathe sheathed to pull on the Void. Gritting his teeth at the sudden sensory shock, Fior felt himself grow steadier, even as the sounds threatened to overwhelm him. He moved through the forms again and they felt smoother, more natural. He could feel every muscle in his body contract, could sense the motions, feel the vibrations in the air around the lathe. He could even tell the subtle but significant difference in the weight of this lathe and the weight of Fang. He knew when he did something wrong, he knew when a form was off, and he used that focus to try and improve himself. He also knew that, were he to leave the Void he would probably lose any progress he had made. But still, it was an advantage he would not soon forget.

"Very good." Cairma watched him with a practice eye as she nodded her approval to his movements. It was true that he had some training in such movements and trained fairly well. However, after a few corrections he seemed to catch on, and even correct himself while within the void. After a while she took a stance behind him.

"Now follow me through these forms. We will do them together." Unfolding the Fan with her lathe, she then made what would be a quick, powerful overhand blow, meant to split the head, "The Courtier Taps his Fan" And then with her arm still outstreched did anouther overhand thrust, returning to a guard position. "The Falcon Stoops" From her guard stanse a more controlled slash, probably used as a precision block or strike, directed at the abdomen, "Parting the Silk." She paused and then with trained movement made a quick thrust in the face. "Hummingbird Kisses the Honeyrose"

Going through each of them once more to ensure that Fior understood them, she went back into a regular standing stance. "Go through each of them again, and as you do so, tell me what is the difference between each upward thrust. If you do not know, you may ask. There is no wrong answer. Continue doing this and with each one i wish for you to move through them faster and faster. And don't forget to move your feet as you do so."

He watched her, his eyes rapt on her form as she moved smoothly through the next four forms. He took in every movement, studied every motion through the Void and did his best to copy them.

He made it through The Courtier Taps his Fan easily enough. It was as simple as its purpose. However, The Falcon Stoops and Parting the Silk gave him a bit more trouble. It wasn't so much that either was particularly difficult, but chaining the two together was harder than his graceful mentor made it look. Hummingbird Kisses the Honeyrose was also obvious in it's purpose, but he had difficulty keeping the lathe completely on course as he performed the thrust.

After nine or ten sets of the new forms, he folded and unfolded the Fan and ran through the entire set from the beginning, trying his best not to make a mistake. After returning the lathe to his side, he turned to his mentor.

"The Courtier Taps his Fan is clearly designed for splitting helms and heads. Hummingbird Kisses the Honeyrose is a kill shot. Plain an simple. Either the oponent will draw back, or will die. Parting the Silk seems like a strike at the abdomen... but it doesn't really feel like there's enough force behind it. The Falcon Stoops feels like it's designed to distract, but it could inflict a light wound..." The look on his face was unsure.
