Almost Chinese Brussel Sprouts with Leeks
Almost Chinese Brussel Sprouts with Leeks
You'll need:
1 Packet of Brussel Sprouts
1 Bunch of Leeks (or if you're clever, 1 packet of about 5 or so already trimmed)
Olive Oil or mixed oil
Bit of Chinese 5 spice *
Bit of Soy Sauce
About a teaspoon of honey
Some garlic and ginger (either fresh, or pre-minced)
Make sure your sprouts and leeks are clean. Half the sprouts, and slice the leeks either in round rings or diagonal rings. Heat a splash of oil in a heavy based pan, add the leeks and brussel sprouts and 5 spice. Stir fry for about 10 minutes (depending on the heat) then add the garlic and ginger. Fry for another minute or so, then add the honey and soy sauce. Taste and adjust till you're happy. I add just splashes of soy sauce at a time, because it can quickly get too much and then yuck.
* Simple Chinese 5 Spice:
1 tablespoon cinnamon powder
1 tablespoon clove powder
1 tablespoon fennel seed powder
1 tablespoon Szechwan peppercorn powder (or just black peppercorn, or mixed peppercorn)
1 tablespoon star anise powder
Mix together and keep in an airtight container.
