Lini's sayings...

Recommended Posts

Alright.  I'm re-reading the fool books for the second time, and while reading I came across something that has annoyed me before, and continues to do so.  I'm sure everyone is acquainted with Lini, and her "brilliant" sayings.  Now is it just me or are her sayings kind of...uhh foolish... weak.. bad?

Here's an example: "Dragging feet never finish a journey."

Now, I don't find anything brilliant about this... do you? O.o  It's the equivalence of me saying "Attacking a bear gets you killed."

Of course, there are many more of these "sayings" that if not surrounded by quotation marks, would just be ordinary sentences.

Please do share your foolish thoughts.

"The Blind cannot see the Light, no matter how bright it shines."

"A penny saved is a penny earned."

"Nobody goes there anymore because it's too crowded."

I actually loved Lini's sayings and I found them quite amusing.  Lini reminds me of my grandmother, fussing with me when I was a child.  She would always have these sayings that made me feel like a fool.  Ironically, some of Lini's sayings I have heard somewhere before in our world.

Sorry, but Lini Rules!

No one would pay any attention to "Attacking a bear gets you killed." because it's to literal so it doesn't mean anything except that.

All the sayings, while I find Lini to be a bit annoying, have nothing to do with the situation.

If the situation was Morgase deciding to walk up to Rahvin and scratch his eyes out, "The girl who tries to skin the live bear loses her own"  would fit.  Sure, it makes you roll your eyes but you get the point and make a better decision.  If Lini tried to reason with Morgase, Morgase would start remembering she's a queen and do whatever the hell she felt like doing.

My favorite was one of Verin's sayings.  "A woman decided to ride a tiger.  It was fine ride until she realized she could never get off and never sleep."

Of course, Birgitte's sayings are the best.  A full list can be found at

I agree. Theyre not literal in he context she says them. Instead of simply telling someone they're being stupid like some characters would, they make you think, and once youve started thinking about something rather than just hear it, youre more willing to take the advice

I think its an English-type thing, there are many many of these types of saying floating around.

"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" is one of them.

My favourite of Lini's is "What cannot be changed must be endured."

??? She definitely has attended at least one of the AA sessions ;)

:D Love that one. On a darker note I hate Lini. I would love to see her get crushed by a falling cow at some point during the last battle. ;)

Please do share your foolish thoughts.

I see her as a twisted way of mixing Respice post te ... + Memento mori ... into a person. Nothing more.
